Agent Jamie Demetrick has the largest consignment with 14; six are BC-breds. He has a Fusaichi Pegasus filly out of the stakes winner View Halloo. Burning Hope’s filly is by Tale of the Cat which should bring much interest.

Impressive selection of Alberta-breds and yearlings from other jurisdictions on offer

Mark your calendar for the 2017 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale to take place on Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. This event wraps up the Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic Weekend with the Marketplace and Alberta-bred races taking place on Saturday.

The 2017 sale is strongly represented by an impressive selection of Alberta-breds in addition to horses bred in Kentucky, British Columbia, Manitoba, Oklahoma and California. At press time, the number of yearlings offered in the main catalogue is higher than the 2016 sale.

A range of yearlings by sires that currently stand in Alberta, or have in previous seasons, are available in the catalogue, including Big Lightning, Boadini, Cape Canaveral, Charming Assassin, Double Honor, Imperialism, Gayego, Gottcha Gold, Lost Canyon, Mast Track, Max Forever, No Hesitation, Rascal Cat, Schramsberg, Teeman, Where’s the Ring and Wilko. At time of writing, three of these sires are currently in the Top 10 on the Bloodhorse 2017 Canadian Leading Sire List.

Where’s the Ring is in third position with Imperialism in seventh spot, followed closely by Wilko in eighth. In 2016, Where’s the Ring was the sire of earners of over $1.8 million and sired 24 stakes horses including Gypsy Ring ($706,334) and Spadina Road ($466,055). Imperialism by Champion sprinter Langfuhr is the sire of progeny with earnings of over $4 million and stakes winners that include Imperial Czar ($368,733) and Imperial Hint ($500,155). The Breeders’ Cup winner and Awesome Again son, Wilko, is a Grade 1 winner of $2.4 million whose progeny includes the 2016 Grade 3 stakes winner Melmich ($609,491).

A yearling is on offer by the British Columbia son of Maria’s Mon, Cause to Believe, named the 2016 Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds in BC. Two Manitoba breds are available by Rascal Cat, a son of Pulpit out of a Storm Cat mare. Kentucky is represented by the sires Alternation, Birdstone, Country Day, Flashback, Horse Greeley, Jimmy Creed, More than Ready, Strong Mandate and Tizway. A California-bred yearling is available by the graded stakes-winning son of A.P. Indy, Rookie Sensation.

The proven broodmare, Fabulous Brush, has a yearling available by the Alberta sire Cape Canaveral. This filly is a half-sister to the 2015 CTHS Alberta high seller and multiple stakes winner, Norm’s Big Bucks ($53,201 to 2) and a full-sister to the stakes winners and past sales graduates Kingoftherockies ($165,561) and Queenoftheforest ($120,755).

Six of the eight Alberta-bred ‘A’ track stakes winners in 2016 were sale graduates from the CTHS Alberta Yearling Sale and the Alberta Lifetime Leading Earner in 2016, Onestaratatime, was a 2014 sale purchase. Owners of Alberta-bred runners also have the possibility of sharing in the Alberta Breed Improvement Program which offers over $1 Million in Owners’ Breeding Support. All Canadian-bred graduates of the CTHS Alberta sale are eligible to run in the Sales Stakes in Alberta.

Past history has proven an Alberta-bred yearling to be a worthy purchase! Mark your calendar for Sept. 17 and plan to attend.

MANITOBA

Ziprick, again, has a strong consignment

by George Williams

The 2017 Manitoba Yearling Sale takes place this year on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 2:30 p.m. on the Red River Exhibition grounds and once again it looks like it’s set to be dominated by Cam Ziprick and crew.

Ziprick has three yearlings consigned for himself this year while also acting as agent on four more, giving him seven of the 18 yearlings in this year’s sale.

Nine different sires will be represented in this year’s Manitoba sale, led by Going Commando with seven yearlings, followed by True Sense, Quest, and Vengeful Wildcat with two apiece, and Badge of Silver, Court Vision, Honour Devil, Kentucky Bear and Yes It’s True, with one each.

Which yearling will attract the most attention is anybody’s guess, but Hip #11 consigned by Cam Ziprick as agent is sure to get some action. The bay filly by Going Commando—Midnight Shadow by Trajectory is a half-sister to multiple local champion and multiple stakes winner Langara (6 wins, $84,580, CTHS Sales Stakes, Buffalo Stakes, Phil Kives, J W Sifton), one of the gamest horses we’ve seen in these parts in many years. Langara is by Langfuhr, but Going Commando has done himself proud in Manitoba with 32 winners from 45 starters including local stakes horses She’s Regal, Danger Rules, Kommando Kate and Whiskey Bandit, among others.

Next in the must-look-at lineup is Hip #5, also consigned by Ziprick. The bay filly by Going Commando is a full sister to both Jet Again (3 wins, $57,687, Frank Arnason Sire Stakes) and Paint My Ride (3 wins, $37,916, Buffalo Stakes, Osiris Stakes, Frank Arnason Sire Stakes).

Another yearling likely to get much attention is Hip #18, Classic Smarts, consigned by Starfield Stable. The bay gelding by Breeders’ Cup Mile-Grade 1 winner Court Vision is out of Away Smartly by Sky Classic. Away Smartly is an unplaced full-sister to First Quarter (5 wins, 1 second, 5 thirds, $387,679, Carotene Stakes) and a half-sister to Runaway Love (8-4-5, $530,114, Steady Growth Stakes) and One Way Love (15-6-6, $962,518, champion sprinter, champion older horse in Canada, Autumn H.-Grade 3, Vigil H.-Grade 3). Quite the pedigree for a Manitoba Yearling Sale.

Next in line, we have Hip #17 consigned by Kelly Halliday. The bay gelding by True Sense is out of the stakes-placed Academy Award mare Annie’s Award (6-12-9, $70,012, 3rd Cincinnatian Stakes). Annie’s Award is half-sister to triple track-record setter Cayenne Red (18-5-6, $284,117, Howard B. Noonan Stakes, North Randall Stakes). True Sense, a full brother to 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-Grade 1 and 2007 Kentucky Derby-Grade 1 winner Street Sense, has had only five starters so far, but his 3-year-old filly Berazzle turned some heads when she broke her maiden at first asking at Sunland Park over Maiden Special Weight foes this spring and she has since gone on to be stakes-placed twice behind star local filly Escape Clause.

Other interesting pedigree notes from this year’s crop of sale youngsters include Hip #2, Skip The Mischief, consigned by Cam Ziprick as agent. The bay gelding by Going Commando is out of the winning Holy Bull mare Bull Market Lady and his second dam, One Great Lady is a half-sister to Lady’s Secret (25 wins, $3,021,325, horse of the year, champion older mare, Breeders’ Cup Distaff-G1).

Hip #4, Twisted Sensation, from the Vailla Kay Butler consignment, is a bay filly by Quest ($768,012, Clark H.-Grade 2) out of the stakes-placed His Excellence mare Easters Lilly (5 wins, 3 to 7, $60,846, 2nd Distaff S.) and hails from a strong Manitoba family of runners including Nasty Millie (2 wins at 3, $22,191, R.C. Anderson S.), One Night Lover (8 wins, 2 to 6, $163,552, Gold Cup) and Slnkylady (8 wins, 2 to 4, $101,995, Assiniboia Oaks).

Hip #6, Yesitsmejohnny G, from the consignment of Jerry Lambert and Lynn Mathews, is a chestnut gelding by Yes It’s True out of the producing Speightstown mare Inspeightofsuccess, who is a half-sister to the stakes- placed Hard Seven (4 wins, 2 to 4, $175,750, Shelby County S.). Hip #7, Edgefield, is a bay gelding from the Kelly Halliday consignment by Going Commando out of the stakes-placed The Cliff’s Edge mare Jonmil’s Edge (2 wins at 2 and 3, $103,330, 3rd Presque Isle DebutanteS.) Hip #9, Summer Grove, is a bay filly, also from the Kelly Halliday consignment, by Going Commando out of the winning stakes-producing Salt Lake mare Let Salt Fly. The latter is a full sister to Salt It (4 wins, $265,380, Black Eyed Susan S.-Grade 2).

Hip #12, Purrsibility, a bay gelding from the consignment of Betty Hughes, is by Vengeful Wildcat (Black-type winner of 3 races, $232,750, Tyro S.) out of Pillow Queen, who is a full-sister to Rich R Gold (9 wins, 2 to 6, British Columbia Cup Stallion H.). Pillow Queen has already produced the stakes-placed Naughty Dotty (3 wins at 3, $46,782, R. C. Anderson S.) by Rebmec.

The last yearling we’ll mention is Hip #8, Modesty’s Tribute, from the Cam Ziprick, Agent consignment. The chestnut filly by Going Commando is out of the winning mare Jungle Storm, who a full sister to the Storm Boot mare Primal Storm (3 wins at 2 and 3, $137,672, Flash S.-Grade 3). Modesty’s Tribute is also a half-sister to Lightnin Fast Girl (9 wins, 2 to 6, and $217,932) and It’s The Rush (6 wins, 2 to 5, and $179,457.)

There’s enough pedigree in this sale to produce a few stakes winners at a bargain price.
