Ontario firms up first Breeders’ Cup starters for California
SPRING VENTURE and SPRING IN THE AIR, two Spring at Last fillies from the Mark Casse stable, ran 1-2 in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine and may both be headed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on turf in November.
The winner gets a free pass and some expenses to go and she is owned by Gary Barber and Stoneway Farm (Jim Stone). Stoneway is relatively new to the Casse/Woodbine fold. Spring Venture was a 2yo in training purchase just in June and she has looked like a freak filly in her 2 races.
Her winning Beyer yesterday was 78. The $320,000 purchase price was listed for the filly at auction but Stoneway did breed the chestnut.
Spring at Last is a son of Silver Deputy, a Canadian-bred who stood briefly in Ontario. The mare is Zahwah, a daughter of the top mare Funistrada.
SPRING IN THE AIR is an Ontario bred, WinStar bred her, and she is a good one too. She is from the mare Unbridled Run, by Unbridled. She was a $120,00 2yo purchase by John oxley.
NANCY O, owned by Canadians Bob Costigan and family, was a good 3rd.
I’M BOUNDTOSCORE did, in the Summer Stakes, Grade 2 for owner/breeder Try Rankin of Indiana.

In the Summer Stakes, the boys Grade 2 for Breeders’ Cup hopefuls, it was IM BOUNDTOSCORE, who led all the way and posted a 73 Beyer in a 10 to 1 upset. The Summer featured a weaker, smaller field and the winner was coming off a win in a 5 furlong turf dash. He had been to a variety of tracks in 4 races and had a good Beyer Figure from his 2nd last time in the Tyro stakes, but it was hard to play him on the stretch out.
But jockey Sarah Rook won the early chess game and got the son of Even the Score to save what he needed and they held off Are You Kidding Me in the late furlong.

Kinghaven Farms Stormy Lord wins President’s Cup again
STORMY LORD became the latest Canadian-bred millionaire when 2nd in the Sky Classic Stakes in his latest and then piled on more cash when he won the President’s Cup Grade 3 at Parx Racing yesterday, the second year in succession for the lean chestnut 5yo son of Stormy Atlantis – Lady Auchamore. His Beyer was 94 for 1 1/8 miles on grass.
Stormy ended a six race losing streak but had been in good form going into the Parx Race. ian Black trains. He has earned $1,153,686.
Jim McAleney, who rides Stormy so well, went down and partnered his buddy.
Woodbine’s KARA’S ORENTIATION was placed 2nd after a bad accident caused a multi horse spill. Steven Chircop trains Kara’s Orientation for Pinnacle Racing and Max Berketa.

It has been a little over three years since Ontario horseman Dave Cotey was in the midst of a media whirlwind thanks a horse he bought for just $9,500.
Mine that Bird, who trained and raced in Ontario for a year before being sold by Cotey to American owners, won the Kentucky Derby in May, 2009 at 50 to 1.
Immediately, Cotey was thrust into the headlines. He repeatedly told his story of how he bought the plain bay gelding for him and his partners Hugh Galbraith and Derek Ball and the $400,000 he could not turn down to sell him.

WISE DAN has to be the pick here, he seems to be holding his form well based on his recent workouts. Trainer Charles Lopresti won this race last year with Turallure. Wise Dan will be heavily favoured but CITYSCAPE is a top-otch Euro-invader.
Locals with a chance include RIDING THE RIVER, BIG BAND SOUND and HUNTERS BAY.
The latter is a seriously good horse on Polytrack and he makes his grass debut. He is from a female family of turf stars such as Fabulous Frolic.
