Happy Friday ! Did you watch the great mare BLACK CAVIAR this morning?
Gorgeous photo of a newborn colt by STRUT THE STAGE out of CHEROKEE LYNN, by CHEROKEE RUN, foaled at Kingsgate Stud in the Niagara Region. Kingsgate (http://www.kingsgatestud.com) is home to one of Ontario’s most underrated stallions, LEGAL JOUSTING, who crosses so very well with BOLD EXECUTIVE line mares. Thanks to Krista Kocot for this groovy photo.
BLACK CAVIAR WINS 24TH STRAIGHT
Fireworks at the track as Caviar gets no. 24 this morning
Breathtaking. Easy. Canter.
Whatever word you use, watching Black Caviar this morning (hope all you racing fans were watching!) at 6:58 a.m. EST gave us goosebumps. The crowd at Moonee Valley was incredible, it was monstrous and boisterous. Even the commentators for the track were wearing ties in the colours of her salmon pink and black dotted silks.
She won in a canter and didn’t have to run fast to do it.
The question is, what will she do next? Will she race again or will she be bred?
Sounds like she is off to Sydney for her next race!
*Today’s funny, interview (watched on HPI) after the Moonee Valley with Alicia Nolem, wife of jockey Luke Nolen…
Commentator: How has your husband been this week leading to the race”
A. Nolen: I don’t know if I can say it, but ‘a prick’
WOODBINE’S POLYTRACK OPENS
There has only been 15 workers at Woodbine in each of the last 2 days, training track mostly, since the weather has been tough. It is very cold, windy and icy. The temps are expected to sneak up a bit this weekend.
The only horse to work on the Polytrack is Java King, who went 2 furlongs for Darren Glennon on Wednesday.

Canadian-breds in action, former Woodbine runner My Name is Michael too
Hall of Famer Bill Mott to Send My Name is Michael in Spiral
Running for the first time under the care of Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott, My Name is Michael was sent off the 8-5 favorite in his 2013 debut, the Feb. 2 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The son of Macho Uno didn’t get the job done that day, but he caught many an eye with his powerful late rush to secure a third-place finish.
“I thought it was a good race,” Mott said. “The dirt hit him in the face with all the spray from the kickback there, but I thought he was finishing as well as anyone in the race.”
My Name is Michael developed “a little fever” after the race and missed a few days of training, according to Mott. “We had been considering the Fountain of Youth, but we had to miss that one,” he said.
Mott’s charge is feeling much better now, and another come-from-behind effort under Joel Rosario is anticipated.
“It’s not very easy to change a horse’s running style,” said Mott.
A 10-1 proposition on Mike Battaglia’s morning-line, My Name is Michael will break from post 5 in the full field of 12. The colt shipped to Turfway from South Florida today and will gallop over the Turfway strip Friday morning.

OH NO – FEDERAL BUDGET HAS SOME FINE PRINT..
MANITOBA CO-OPERATOR REPORT:
Federal budget boosts tax breaks to farmers
Reforms eyed for foreign temp worker program, tariffs
BUT…(thanks to RD for tipping us on this little nugget..)
“Flaherty also plans to amend related tax rules to clarify that a taxpayer’s other sources of income must be “subordinate to farming” in order for farming losses to be fully deductible against income from other sources — that is, not limited by the RFL rule.
That proposed amendment would shut a tax loophole that turned up in a Supreme Court ruling last year (Queen v. Craig, 2012), allowing a lawyer to claim full deduction of losses from a racehorse farming operation.”
