BEHOLD THE BREEDERS’ CUP – EDITION 30
Santa Anita, it’s gorgeous, yes, but the track surface favours speed
NUMBERS UP – Total handle for Friday’s opening day of the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Santa Anita realized total handle of $51,521,146, an improvement of 8% from the 2012 figure of $47,586,765. Of that number, $35,549,196 was wagered on the five Breeders’ Cup races. Total attendance Friday at Santa Anita was 35,833, which represented a 3.5% increase over the 34,619 on hand
for last year’s opening program.
CANADIAN INFLUENCES – GOLDENCENTS AND BEHOLDER
When GOLDENCENTS staggered home and won the BREEDERS’ CUP DIRT MILE in 1:35 (not exactly a fast time for a grade 1 race) it put an exclamation mark on a dirt track that was very fast, very kind to speed and the jockeys rode it that way.
Watch the Dirt Mile was almost funny since everyone was sending so hard and the one who came away with the win was the Doug O’Neill trainee GOLDENCENTS , who had been tooting his own horn on Twiiter all week.
This was a coup for Manitoba in a way – that province’s breeders cheered the colt through the Kentucky Derby this year because his bloodlines are all Manitoba.
The 3yo colt’s dam is Manitoba bred GOLDEN WORKS, a winner bred by Phil Kives.
Golden Works, by Banker’s Gold, is out of BODY WORKS, one of Manitoba’s top fillies in 1991-1992, racing for Kive’s K-5 STABLE.
Body Works is by BOLD RUCKUS, the star Canadian stallion that Park Stud brought in in the early 1980’s to stand at its Orangevill farm.
Bold Ruckus went on to be a perennial leading sire and he is in the canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
KINTO, by Kinsman Hope, is the Canadian-bred dam of Body Works. She raced for IVAN THRASHER and won $100,000 in the early 1980s. Kinto’s dam, WHERE TO, was bred by John Beer in ONtario and is by Hidden Treasure.

Canadian influences on the birth of Beholder since the winners‘ 2nd dam is Canadian bred. CRYSTAL LADY, by Trick Creek, was bred by Rick Kennedy and Reade Baker in ONtario. Baker owned ONE LAST BIRD who produced Canadian bred MALCOHA, a tough runner who won over $400,000 at Woodbine and Fort Erie.
One Last Bird had 12 foals and her other Canadian bred was CRYSTAL LADY, by Stop the Music. Crystal Lady raced at Fort Erie and was claimed for $6,250. She produced LESLIE’S LADY, a stakes winner at 2 at Hoosier Park. She was bred by David Hagar.
Leslie’s Lady has also produced SW INTO MISCHIEF, who is also the sire of
Henny Hughes out of Leslie’s Lady, from Canadian breeding family – 3rd dam ONE LAST BIRD (out of Last Bird) was broodmare for Reade Baker, produced Canadian bred filly CRYSTAL LADY, dam of Leslie’s Lady (Crystal Lady also raced for Baker and then Nancy HIlts from Fort Erie!)
LONDON BRIDGE?
He had won $32,000 in his career. He was from Europe where he was a front running grass winner but blasted in 2 Polytrack races. Yet there he was, steam rolling to victory in the 1 3/4 mil Breeders’ Cup Marathon to kick off the day with a head scratching result. Equipped with 2 very large and fluffy cheek pieces, this colt is the first ever NEW YORK BRED winner of a Breeders’ Cup race. He is trained by Jo Hughes and is a son of ARCH.
The only 3yo in the race, LONDON BRIDGE was sold right before the race to compete in Australia.
Pedigree buffs who did not look too closely here, will kick themselves. His granndam Kissing Gate, is by the superhourse EASY GOER.

JUVENILE TURF – 1:33 1/5 OUTSTRIP may be little but this grey colt packed a powerful punch to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf over a felow Euro – Giovanni Baldini. BOBBY’S KITTEN, the big favourite, went way too fast on the lead and was 3rd.
The winner is the 1st foal to race of graded SW Asi Siempre, by El Prado. The sire, Exceed and Excel was bred to champion Black Caviar recently.
JUVENILE FILLY TURF – The Euro 2yos don’t race with Lasix so they did not miss it in California, and they just seem to be more polished with more foundation. CHRISSELLIUM won a Group 1 in her last start and blew the field away yesterday in 1:33 3/5. She is owned by 3 partners including WILLIE CARSON. The partners had owned a horse together a few years ago – JANICELAINE, who raced at Woodbine for trainer Roger Attfield after she was sold to the US.
MY CONQUESTADORY ran a very good race under EURICO DA SILVA for trainer Mark Casse and Conquest Stables. There were only 2 options for the gal from the 14 post – drag back or send and she did the latter. She went fast and was still fighting into the stretch before she weakened very late. She wounnd up 4th.
QUOTES
“*I’m very disappointed. He’s only two–going out in 1:09 and change–that’s ridiculous.”
Trainer Chad Brown on beaten favorite Bobby’s Kitten
**It was just one of those things. This track is so speed favoring and everyone is just send, send, send. It
changes everything. –Verrazano’s trainer, Todd Pletcher
**She’s had three hard campaigns. I’ve been very blessed to have a lot of good horses and it’s difficult to have more than two good campaigns with any horse. This mare has come back and won Grade I’s this year and I see no reason why she wouldn’t be champion older mare. She didn’t win the Breeders’ Cup, but she’s been good to us. She’s won two championships and maybe three, and won a couple of Breeders’ Cups. It’s not a bad career.
“Maybe it’s time. Maybe it’s time.” – Bill Mott on Royal Delta
