 TALES OF YOUTH

It is foaling season and Kentucky Derby prep season., the season of youth.

So while local breeders are welcoming the stars of the future, the more immediate, potential stars are in 2 big races in Florida and New Orleans tomorrow. Two major Kentucky Derby prep races take place: the Fountain of Youth and the Risen star Stakes.

Of interest to Canadian fans will be the performance of WE MISS ARTIE, the Ontario bred colt who is in the ‘Youth.

THOROUGHBLOG will handicap the big stakes at Gulfstream (and Fair grounds) Saturday morning – who do you like?

We Miss Artie

“He’s trained so well we feel like he deserves another chance” – Todd Pletcher on WE MISS ARTIE

A winner on both grass and Polytrack, We Miss Artie goes after his first victory on dirt in Saturday’s $400,000 Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey, We Miss Artie is by Artie Schiller, a multiple graded stakes winner on grass including the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).

We Miss Artie opened his 3-year-old campaign finishing second by a head to Storming Inti after a stretch-long duel in the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy on Jan. 19 over the Gulfstream turf.

Since then, he has had two half-mile works at the Palm Meadows training facility in Boynton Beach, each in 48 seconds, ranking second of 67 horses on Feb. 9 and third of 55 horses on Feb. 16.

“The bottom is, the horse is just training too well on the dirt at Palm Meadows not to give it another try,” Pletcher said. “His breezes since the Kitten’s Joy have been really good on the dirt, and we just feel like he’s a horse that over the past eight or nine months has continued to impress us with his training on the dirt. We’ll just see where we are.”

In his two dirt starts at 2, We Miss Artie was second in a five-furlong sprint at Belmont Park on July 4 and seventh, beaten four lengths, in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

“He actually loomed up and made a big move in the Breeders’ Cup, and I thought it was a pretty respectable effort,” Pletcher said. “He’s trained so well we feel like he deserves another chance. We know he’s good on the synthetic as well, so we’ve got those options if this doesn’t pan out, but we figured it was time to find out.”

We Miss Artie will be ridden by Joe Bravo in the Fountain of Youth and break from post 2 in the field of 13. The Pletcher-trained Commissioner, with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, drew post 1 in his stakes debut.

“In a big field like this, you certainly don’t want to get stuck way outside, although the one probably wouldn’t be my first choice either,” Pletcher said of the draw. “Considering the size of the field, I’m okay with it.           “We’ll size up the field and see what we think the pace scenario is going to look like. Both of these horses are not the kind of horses that you could put on the lead, so we’ll try to get a good stalking position and hopefully secure some position going into the first turn. Those guys are going to have to size it up from there in a big field.”

‘NIX’ THOSE HARMFUL GERMS – HAVE YOUR STALLS SPRAYED

Elissa Blowe talks about protecting your horses

Nixall Disinfectant - Enter Here

After the Herpes Virus outbreak of 2013 and the damage it caused to horses, horse people as well as Woodbine and Fort Erie Race Track I decided to focus on finding a product that could protect our horses and our businesses from deadly viruses.  I wanted something that I could be proud of, something that I knew would help others and a product that I could get behind 100%.

The product is called Nixall.  It is EPA approved, all natural, eco-friendly and non-toxic to humans and animals so it is 100% safe to use.

Nixall is unlike any disinfectant on the market.  It destroys Anthrax, Tuberculosis, Antibiotic Resistant Super Bugs, MRSA and their mutations and also destroys viruses, bacteria, fungus, and mold and their mutations which include Equine Herpes and Strangles.  Nixall is used by vets in the USA and is also doctor recommended.  The University of Oregon and the US Marines have shown that Nixall is 100 times stronger than bleach but safe enough for your horse to drink.

How does this work?

We offer a service to disinfect all exposed stall surfaces using Nixall so that you have the peace of mind that your horses are living in a stall that is as bio secure as possible.

In order to continue disinfecting daily, you may buy the product directly from me and have your staff disinfect buckets, tack, brushes, etc.
Why wouldn’t you just use Chlorine Bleach,Pine-Sol (Oil), Virkon or Tek-Trol
Bleach can react with other chemicals to create toxic gases, the smell is unpleasant, it discolors fibers and colored surfaces and bleach loses its strength rapidly. Pine-Sol (Oil) is not water-soluble and you need a very high level of the product to kill many pathogens as well as spore forming bacteria which are extremely difficult to disrupt because of the protective shell that forms around the bacteria.  Virkon can cause skin irritation or corrosion, more so in the powder form.  It can also cause series eye damage, irritate the respiratory tract and should not be used as a hand-washing liquid.   Tek-Trol is highly toxic for humans and especially animals.

*Note that this product does not need time to dry so a horse can be in the stall during treatment (although we recommend that the stall be gutted in order to attack every inch including floors, wall, ceilings, stall door and screens.)

Pricing

$18.00/stall includes product and labour

Payment accepted via Credit Card, Business Check, Bank Draft or Cash

We are offering our services in the United States and Canada and are currently working at a number of sites including Woodbine.

Once you discover what we have about Nixall you will find uses for it every day.  From disinfecting your trailers to keeping your home protected.  Heck, if it can kill Anthrax then it’s good enough for me!

For more information on the Nixall family of products please go to nixall.com.
