TIME FOR MORE LONGSHOTS IN THE BREEDERS’ STAKES?
The 3rd jewel of the CANADIAN TRIPLE CROWN is up on Sunday and while there is no chance of a Triple Crown winner, again, a large field is looking and on the grass, we know what that means.
Not that the Breeders, a race first run in 1889, needs any help with wacky results – the last 2 runnings yielded winners that paid $132 and
$95 respectively.
The popular storyline will be jockey LUIS CONTRERAS going for his own personal Triple Crown, he won the first 2 legs on the series on 2 different horses. Pender Harbour, who won the Prince of Wales, is in the Breeders’.
Only twice in the history of ALL 3 RACES being run has a jockey won the Triple Crown personally, and it was on 2 different horses each time.
Yep, a long session of studying came up with 2 jocks since 1889 to win the Triple Crown personally (I mentioned who there were after the Prince of Wales on this space!).
But Pender Harbour has never been on the grass and he comes off a gut wrenching score in the ‘Wales so he’s no sure thing in what could be a record field.
The record for the race is 15 entrants (only since 1959) and here are the possibilities this year:
WINDFIELDS, the first stakes winner for E.P. Taylor – won the Breeders’ Stakes and his jockey was Herb Lindberg.

VANCOUVER – Veteran jockey Frank Fuentes had to make a quick decision and it turned out to be the right one in the 16th running of the $50,000 Redekop BC Cup Classic at Hastings Racecourse Monday afternoon.
Aboard the odds-on favourite in the holiday feature that attracted an estimated 10,000-12,000 fans, Fuentes took Almost Time off the pace and conserved his energy in the early going and saved the best for the stretch run. “He really wanted to run at the beginning,” Fuentes said, “but I wanted to make sure he had something left at the end of the race.”
Almost Time finished the 1 1/8 miles trip in a time of 1:50.82 to win by a convincing 2 ½ lengths for trainer Dino Condilenios and Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. He paid $4.00, $2.80 and $2.60. Trick of the North also closed well to finish second with Victor’s Magic nailing down third.
The Classic was the highlight of the BC Cup Day card that included six other $50,000 stakes races staged before the largest crowd of the 2011 thoroughbred season and the largest in recent years.

As the 63rd running of the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby was nearing its end, everything was out of whack.
The Caboose was out in front, and the favourite was bringing up the rear.
In the end, though, the Bullet, as it usually is, proved too powerful.
Hammers Bullet stormed down the stretch to edge Big Blue Caboose and jockey Jocelyne Kenny by three-quarters of a length and win the year’s most lucrative race at Assiniboia Downs.
Hammers Bullet paid $12.80, $7.00 and $4.70 while Big Blue Caboose paid $20.40 and $10.40. Gotatigerbythetail, with Rohan Singh on board, was third and paid $3.70 in front of about 6,000 spectators on a hot and steamy Monday afternoon.
“It’s something,” jockey Mark Anderson said. “I’ve been coming here for six years now, and just to get your name in the record books like that, winning this big, prestigious race, it’s just an unbelievable feeling.
“There’s nothing like it. That’s the biggest race I’ve ever won, and it’s unbelievable.”

2YO SETS TRACK RECORD AT FORT ERIE
RED HOT DOLL, owned by Brian Lynch, won her maiden yesterday at 4 1/2 furlongs in 51.22 and set a track record for the distance on dirt. The Officer filly was travelling down from Woodbine for the event. Her Beyer Figure was 60.
