Aaaah summer,we hardly knew ya.
But it’s yearling sale time in Toronto – the sales stakes day will be drawn today and the sale begins Tuesday.
Race results that have an effect on a pedigree page are being duly noted (see yesterday’s updates) and consignors, breeders hope that the new stallion they bred to will be the hot item.
Among these is Queen’s Plate winner NIIGON, whose yearlings seem to be tall and leggy, a bit of white, bay or dark bay. PHILANTHROPIST,the latest Gardiner Farms stallion, also has his first crop in the sale. He’s a stakes winner by Kris S.
SURVIVALIST, by Danzig, was a competitive New York stakes winner and Park Stud is hoping his babies will be popular.
OLD FORESTER has been stamping his foals. A stakes winning chestnut with lots of white, his babies are looking the same.
And the first North American crop of yearlings for BEST OF THE BESTS has to be exciting- he had a litany of winners in his first years at stud overseas.
Sam-Son Farms and Colebrook (also the home of Niigon) will be watching the youngsters by turf star STRUT THE STAGE, the feisty Nureyev stallion who has three select yearlings to kick his career off.
UPDATES – HIP NO. 51 – a chestnut filly by CONSOLIDATOR out of the Phone Trick mare WORSHIPPED now has a winning 3yo half brother named LUMEN (By Johnannesburg). Second dam is Grade 1 winner ADORED.

Alberta sale numbers drop

With the proposed new racetrack project in Balzac stalled and the future of racing in southern Alberta in jeopardy, it isn’t surprising the numbers were down significantly at the Canadian Thoroughbred Society summer yearling sale in Red Deer, Alberta, on Tuesday.
Eighty-two yearlings were sold for a gross of $667,300, a 45 percent drop from last year’s total of $1,221,750 from 130 horses sold. The median price this year was $2,700, compared with $5,000 in 2008.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Artist ELAINE MCPHERSON paid $30,000 for the top yearling, a filly by Purse out of a half sister to supersire MEDAGLIA D’ORO, sire of Rachel Alexandra.

BLOOD-HORSE EXCERPT
Stronach Stables Buys Einstein
Einstein, who is scheduled to run in the Sept. 6 Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar, has been bought by Frank Stronach’s Stronach Stables for an undisclosed sum from Bill Gallion and Shirley Cunningham’s Midnight Cry Stable. The deal was completed Aug. 31.
Einstein, who was purchased for his ability as a runner and his potential as a stallion, is a grade I winner this year on the main track and the turf. He captured the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) on a synthetic surface and then took the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (gr. IT) on grass at Churchill Downs for the second consecutive year.
Bred in 2002 and foaled in Brazil, Einstein has made all 27 starts in North America, winning 11 of 27 races. He has won or placed in 13 stakes, all of which are graded, and has earned $2,703,324.

JET FREIGHTER, stakes winner and Woodbine course record setter is still happy and playful these days. URI FISHMAN reports that he took these photos of the old guy on the day of the funeral of his trainer Tony Mattine. The horse lost his course record during the same week.
