Shut It Down tries for berth today
– K.K. Sengara’s SHUT IT DOWN, who ran gamely off a slow pace to be 2nd to El Brujo in the Queenston Stakes, drops into an allowance race for Ontario sired runners today as he tackles a 1 1/16 mile distance in race 4, the first leg of the PIck 4. The Porto Foricos gelding meets older horses and a lot of other speed so his task will be tough.
The allowance race is the second such allowance event this week that included Plate eligibles but a 9 furlong allowance, scheduled for Sunday that was expected to attract sensational maiden winner Southdale, did not fill.

LADY ANGELA HONOURED
Saturday feature at Woodbine
– Ontario sired 3yo fillies are taking the stage for the feature at Woodbine tomorrow in the Lady Angela Stakes. The race is named for the Hyperion mare brought from overseas by E.P. Taylor and then later produced the great Nearctic.
The big favourite in the race will be MINKREDIBLE for the Overheath team and trainer Mike DePaulo. The Tomhawk filly is fast but last time she broke so slowly that she rallied in a good effort. If she gets a good start, does she try to lead all the way through 7 furlongs?
Might not be worth the low odds you will get so how about considering LUNAR LINDA, who comes off a troubled journey for the Hat Trick and Double Eagle Stables or EXECUTIVE DEED (Photo at left by Norm Fines), who just won her maiden for Dr. Liz Pathak andtrainer Sid Attard.

Canadian trainer Carl Norman Anderson wins 1,000th race
– Canadian-based trainer Carl Norman Anderson won the 1,000th race of his career with Alacazar on May 20 at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since 1977, Anderson has earned more than $4,071,007 in purses and won 127 stakes. His biggest win came with Deputy Country in the 2004 Breeders’ Gold Cup Stakes at Assiniboia.
MARQUIS OPENS WITH HUGE FIELDS
– It’s post time at Marquis Downs. The racing season at the Downs kicks off (tonight) night and runs every Friday and Saturday night through the September long weekend. A total of 66 horses have been entered for the 8 races tonight.
Following a handful of horse injuries in the 2008 season the Downs have invested in a new track conditioner. The $35,000 machine smooths and packs the track to ensure the consistency of the surface for all participants.
In addition the season will once again feature; the Heritage Weekend August 14th and 15th, the Prairie Lilly Sale and Race August 29th and the 49th running of the Saskatchewan Derby September 5th. First post time tomorrow night is at 7 o’clock
ALBERTA: BALZAC RACING FACILITY UPDATE
– If $55 million — perhaps a relatively-small $35 million – can be raised by mid-summer, the proposed Balzac racing facility will be in place by mid-summer.
It’s a big “if.”
Max Gibb, CEO of the long-delayed CrossIron project, conceded during an emotional supper-hour meeting with horsemen at Northlands Park that these are “part of the worst financial situation … in this lifetime.”
Several horsemen rapped his description of proceedings to this point as inaccurate or misleading.
After Gibb objected that horsemen are “negative” about the whole thing, it was pointed out that the one-mile track, part of a massive development about seven miles from the Calgary International Airport, initially designed to cost $284 million, was supposed to be in operation by 2008 at the latest.
