Julia Carey wins 2, Mast Track sires first winner   He’s a little guy who was not all that exciting when he first began his early training but passion for action became the 78th winner of the prestigious Cup & Saucer At Woodbine On Sunday For Owner and breeder Ben Hutzel. Said Hutzel, “It’s been fantastic to see how Mike has brought this horse along.  He didn’t show it early (in his development) but boy, he’s certainly come on strong.” Explained DePaulo, “They weren’t that thrilled about him in South Carolina (during the winter), but he got here, went about his business, a real gentleman and has done everything we’ve asked him.  The only thing he did was stay in the gate a little first time he ran.   But he’s been good ever since.” Hutzel revealed that it was DePaulo who suggested that he breed his turf-loving mare Maritime Passion to 2004 Breeders’ Cup winner Speightstown.     The result was Passion for Action, who earned $150,000 for his effort on Sunday.

PASSION FOR ACTION posted an 80 Beyer Figuref or his win in 1:42.66. Tough trips for Samuel Dechamplain and Billy’s Star .

Earlier, SAN NICOLA THUNDER powered his way to a win in the Bunty Lawless Stakes at 1 mile on the grass, hitting an 84 Beyer Figure.  Bred and co-owned by Joe Pirone who owns with Paul Cooper, San Nicola Thunder is a Silent Name (Jpn) gelding who won the Vice regent stakes last year. Justin stein rode the dark bay. Pender Harbour had a bit of a stumble out of the gate and not much pace to run at and he finished 4th, just a head from 3rd behind Iroquois Falls and Warbred.

More from Sunday – WAITINGINTHEWINGS did just that in race 2 for $16,000 claiming for fillies and mares and then charged up the rail to win for Colebrook farms and trainer Ashlee Brnjas. The Niigon mare is a 5yo who was winning for the first time in her 4th race this year. Erika Smilovsky rode.

Race 3 – an open maiden allowance went to PLATINUM GLORY, coming off a Dec – October layoff for trainer Mike DePaulo. Bred by Spring Farm and owned by John DioScola, Platinum Glory is a grey by Dunkirk who cost $65,000 as a Keeneland yearling. Jesse Campbell rode the 3yo colt.

Race 4- COLLEEN’S SAILOR is a classy horse who is back at Woodbine now, in the care of his  4th different trainer since he was 3rd in the Prince of Wales Stakes in 2012. He came from the clouds to win this 6 furlong sprint for $32,000 in 1:09.77 – good for an 80 Beyer Figure. Ricky Griffith trains and Patrick Husbands rode .

Race 5- a bit of a messy race as the gates were sprung before about half the field was not ready. only one horse was refunded – Monetary Merv. The winner, ACEUPHILSSLEEVE got away to an easy lead and won for Greg Cox and the team of Barker, Cindy Cox and Lisa McCallum Smith. It was the gelding’s first win of the year and he is a Philanthropist 5yo who was ridden by David Moran

. Race 6- PSYCHOTHERAPY,off the claim for Brad McKnight and Norm McKnight won a thriller in this $16,000 claiming for older horses at 1 1/16 miles. He took the lead off the last turn and then battled Moonshine Martini to the wire. The latter was also off the claim, going for Willie Armata.

The Peaks and Valleys mare out of Ocean Classic by Sky Classic was bred by Freeman and Frank Mermenstein. She os 3 for 15 in her career and that was her 2nd win in 8 races in 2014. Gerry Olguin rides this mare like he owns her.

In race 10, HENKE wore down Niigon’s Turn to win this allowance raceon the grass for Ontario sired boys. The winner is also a Discovery racing fellow, co-owned by Tom McCrocklin. He is by Sligo Bay out of Victoria Bay by Northern Afleet, bred by the owners. Eurico da Silva rode the winner.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND UNDERWAY AT WOODBINE

Exciting horses and great weather and a celebration of friends and family. Happy Thanksgiving.

POHDI POHDI set the stage for the weekend with her galloping win in the 6 furlong Victorian Queen Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday, winning under wraps for 3 Sons Racing and trainer Robert Tiller. Patrick Husbands just sat on this white faced daughter of Old Forester – Miss Juicey, by Trajectory.

A $36,000 yearling purchase (and she was hip no. 330 last year, deep into the local sale), this fast filly is 2 for 2 in her career. She paid just $2.90 to win. She was sold by Beth Hancock, as agent for Paradox Farm.
More Saturday

Wowee – TAKEITDOWNTHEROAD, at 30 to 1, ran down the battling favourites Bear at Last and Entwhistle in the 1 1/16 mile maiden 2yo allowance race to start the day. This Florida bred, Ontario sired 2yo gelding was 10th beaten 16 lengths in his debut to Cut to the Chase (in the Cup & Saucer Stakes today) but in this race he stalked from the rail and rallied under David Moran for Dura racing and Mike Doyle. He was a $3,000 2yo in training purchase in June and he is by Strut the Stage

Race 2- a good day for the Tiller team as KITTEN CANDY won the 2nd race with a last-to-first rally in a cool allowance race at 6 furlongs. This 4yo is a good one when he has the right trip and he is 2 for 4 this year. Husbands rode him and he was dipping out of the Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes, won by Calgary Cat, who is headed to the Nearctic Stakes, Grade 2 next weekend.

Race 3- shipper BELLE RENCONTRE (Ire) won this maiden allowance in her 3rd career start for owner Fred Seitz, who often ships horses to Woodbine. This Oasis dream filly was 7 to 2  and she is the first winner for her dam Bella, by Bering. David Moran rode for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Race 4- BEARS PEARL, the 4th , 4-time winner of the year has won all of those races in succession. Here she galloped to the win at 5 furlongs in a non-winners of 1 other than allowance race. Eurico da Silva ot the mount as Patrick Husbands took Amethea for Mark Casse. Bears Pearl is owned by Bear Stable, which also bred the 4yo grey by Seeking the Dia. Mike DePaulo trains.

Race 5- While I loved a young horse named MALTESE KNIGHT in this race at 40 to 1, it was TORMENTA FIERA who came from miles behind to get up and win his maiden in his 13th start. This 4yo gelding has shown plenty of promise and the drop to $12,500 claiming did the trick. The winner is a Charles Fipke bred by Perfect Soul, Mike Doyle trains for A & L Racing. Maltese Knight was 4th beaten about one length in a super effort.

Race 6 – John Curtis and Ginp Panza’s homebred filly EMMA’S LOVE rallied wide to win this #8,000 claiming race for her 2nd win her 12th career race. She is by one Way Love out of Princess Redekop and Justin Stein rides for Robert Gerl.

Race 7 – Owner George Bigliardi has won 2 races in 2 days as CLUB ONE TWO won this grass allowance race in her turf debut, well prepared by trainer Paul Attard. The 4yo by Niigon had not raced sin ce June and Patrick Husbands had another brilliant ride.

Race 9  – Patrick Husbands with his 4th win of the day – amazing. Here he guided MARKED IN STONE to his first win since 2012 (he missed all of 2013) to win for trainer Gail Cox and owner Sue Foreman
Race 10 – Currghamore Farm – Vera Simpson and Mike Dube, won with their homebred ABSOLUTE, a lovely looking Milwaukee Brew gelding who was making only his 2nd start and won this maiden allowance on the grass in gate to wire fashion under Emma-Jayne Wilson. Reade Baker trains.
