QROOI AWARDS BANQUET and CELEBRATION ON SATURDAY!
The Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario, Inc. hosts its annual Awards Banquet and Ceremony Saturday, Feb 17, at the Ajax Convention Centre.
The evening will honour the Champion horses and people of 2017 and celebrate the upcoming racing season which begins on May 8.
The awards night will also include entertainment from the popular TWO FOR THE SHOW DJ team and special guests. It will be a much needed night out halfway through a very snowy, cold winter.

REMINGTON PARK TRAINING RACES UNDERWAY
The second week of training races at Remington Park in Oklahoma includes starters for one of Ajax Downs’ top stables.
Owner MILENA KWIECIEN and trainer JASON PASCOE have three juveniles in races on Wednesday Feb. 14, on a card of 11 training events for various ages of horses.
Each dash is 250 yards.
In race 1, CODE NAME VALOR, a bay filly by Valiant Hero – Famous Mariah, by Tres Seis has post 4 in an 8-horse field. Post time is 11 a.m. Central time.
Code Name Valor was a $9,000 purchase from the September Yearling Sale at Heritage Place.
Race 4 has EYESA SENATOR TOO, a 2-year-old colt by Louisiana Senator – Eyesa Shazoom by Shazoom in post 5 in an 8-horse field. Kwiecien paid $10,000 for Eyes Senator Too who is a full brother to a pair of placed 2-year-olds of 2017.
And in race 8, STRIPPER DUST, a $12,500 purchase, will start from post 7 in her dash. Stripper Dust is by Louisiana Senator – Miranda Fame by Dash Ta Fame. Miranda Fame is a Grade 1 winner and track record setter.

Remington’s 5- day Quarter Horse meeting opens on March 9.

A number of “summer sale” yearling graduates have been entered throughout the card. Three of those 2-year-olds will face off in Race 10.
Race 10 will feature the $46,000 Heritage Place Sales graduate Watah Flash for owner Lane and Sons and trainer Brian Muse. The son of champion/champion sire First Moonflash is a half-brother to Remington Park Futurity winner Lota Pyc; Jack Brooks Stakes(RG3) winner Regard Watah Dash In A Flash stakes winner Lota James; and stakes-placed Watah Success. The sorrel colt is from the Shazoom mare Lotawatah.
Also, in race 10 is the $39,000 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate Jess Show Me, a colt by Mr Jess Perry from the First Down Dash mare Show Me Delight. Wesley Giles conditions the half-brother to stakes-placed One Eyed Eagle for Jose Espinosa. This is the immediate family of stakes winners Joker On Jack, Jess Delightful, Runaway Fortune and Start The Commotion.
Another summer sale contender in Race 10 is Galaxy Speed. Luis Villafranco will saddle the colt by last year’s leading sire of money earners Apollitical Jess from the stakes winning First Down Dash mare Catalina Fantasy. Owner Santos Lopez paid $37,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for the gray colt from a sister to Grade 1 winner First Down Illusion.
In Race 5, Wes Giles will saddle Dor, a $37,000 Heritage Place September graduate, for owner Too For Two. The daughter of world champion sire FDD Dynasty is out of Remington Park Futurity(G1) winner First Prize Leesa. She is a half-sister to stakes winner First Prize Shaunda and Barrue.

QUARTER HORSE RACING SHOWCASES SPORT TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Horse racing proceedings at Rillito Park Racetrack Feb. 10-11 had a distinctly Wildcat-like feel to them, with University of Arizona students at the helm of nearly every facet of race-day operations.
From the paddocks to the holding pen, UA Race Track Industry Program students worked throughout the park to make the weekend festivities a reality. That’s all by design, according to the tracks General Manager and UA alum Michael Weiss.
“For the past four seasons, I’ve worked with the students and placed them in positions that I think they’ll excel,” Weiss said. “And we’ve been about 100 percent with the graduating students in getting them jobs.”
Originally from Ohio, and a self-described racetrack industry “lifer,” Weiss has traveled from his home in Florida for the last four years to manage the 75-year-old Rillito, which bills itself as the home of quarter-horse racing and one of the first to implement a photo-finish.
