Royal Ascot tragedy SATURDAY MORNING – THOMAS CHIPPENDALE wins 1 1/2 mile Hardwicke Stakes over heavy turf and collapses and dies after the race…The Hardwicke had a spill earlier in the race as a horse slipped on the wet grass.
Following a hectic weekend of CTHS Awards, standardbred racing and more, THOROUGHBLOG is updating races this week from Woodbine and presenting its TOP 10 for the Queen’s Plate:
BERT’S BAR is not expected to compete. POWER PHIL is currently on the fence as is SWEET LIL MAN, who was not a threat in the 4 horse Victoria Park Stakes last weekend.
They’re Off. Racing at Woodbine this weekend heats up as we head into long weekend and then the Queen’s Plate!

CONQUEST WHIPLASH – 2 furlongs in 20 2/5, debuts in Victoria Stakes
The Hear No Evil beginner CONQUEST WHIPLASH makes her career debut against colts in the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine today. The Victoria was last won by a filly in 1994 by Honky Tonk Tune.
Previously named THANK YOU DADDY, Conquest Whiplash was only a $15,000 yearling but the fast workout led to a hefty $370,000 purchase price by Conquest Stables.
Conquest has been aggressive in its purchases. The American based group won a 2yo race at Churchill yesterday with CONQUEST TWO STEP, also trained by Mark Casse.
Tomorrow at Woodbine, the much more interesting KING EDWARD STAKES, at 1 mile on the grass, features champions PENDER HARBOUR, RIDING THE RIVER plus graded stakes winner Prospective and others.
WOODBINE WRAP WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY
The Polytrack was playing fair on Wednesday night. Jockey Gary Boulanger won a pair of races, as did Jesse Campbell.
The most notable jockey win, however was NICK WEBB, who took his first score on the incredibly game mare NIIGON’S PRINCESS. This George Bigliardi-bred mare, owned by Ellie Boje Stable and partners, was zooming way up in class to $40,000 to get a chance to run on the grass again. She came from far back and won by a nose to push her career earnings to over $246,000. She cost $40,000 at auction.
It was her 4th win in her last 5 races.
FRIDAY – Race 1 went to Centennial Farms (Niagara’s) PALAMINO ANTONIO, going for the rolling Mark Casse/Gary Boulanger duo. The winner is an Ontario bred by Indygo Shiner out of Salaam by Woodman. That was the 3rd career start to the gelding who was racing for $12,500 claiming.
Race 2, older horses for $10,000 went to RUNAWAY CONTENDER, who was claimed for $6,250 in May and was winning for $10,000. Scott Fairlie’s Ace Racing Stable owns the 5yo and Michelle Rainford took her 7th win of the season.
More running away…RUNNAWAY MY WAY won the 3rd for $10,000, non-winners of 3. The 8-year-old was making his 35th career start for owner and trainer Mike Catania.
That race featured a scary incident as FANTASTIC PROSPECT, dropping in class from allwoance to $10,000 bore out badly in the stretch under heavy left handed whipping. The colt continued to drift out while under heavy pressure and he crashed into the eventual winner. He was checked hard near the wire.
Fantastic Prospect felt the whip a minimum of 18 times.
Race4 was on the grass and the winner was C Scott Abbott’s CAPTIVATING DANCER, a very nice prospect by Omodavor. Making her 4th career start, the Florida bred was up in time to beat an unlucky Checked Past who was used hard on the pace. The winner posted a 70 Beyer for 1 mile on the grass in 1:34 2/5. Mike Doyle trains and David Moran rode.
Race 5, maidens for $16,000 went to William Gierkink’s GO WES GO, who rallied from far back up the rail to win in his 5th career race.
The day’s highest Beyer Figure was the 78 earned by Laurie Silvera’s COURTVILLE in race 6. The Saffir – Signs of Glory, Southern Halo 4yo gelding won the 7 furlong turf race on the drop to $40,000 claiming.
Yes, another Ontario sired, multiple winner won this category of non-winners of 2 or 3 or Ontario event.
A golden angle right now.
MOBIL’S MOBIE may not have the best name in horse racing but he a nice purse on Friday for owner Philip Franze. The Mobil 3yo led all the way in his 3rd race of the year to take his maiden at the maiden allowance class. He was 1st time Lasix for trainer Julia Carey. The gelding was claimed last December for $20,000.
SINSTER SPINSTER won her 2nd race of the year in the 8th, an allwoance for ONtario sired gals. The 5yo homebred for Mario Capobianco was making the turf-to-Polytrack move for trainer Nick Nosowenko. She is by Mr Jester out of Dancing Princess by Dance Brightly.
Favoured CANADIAN FLAG, owned by Laconian Racing Stables, won his maiden for $50,000 claiming in the last race. Bred by Terra Farms and a 4yo by Aragorn, the Josie Carroll trainee
battled on the pace all the way.

NEW RACING CLUB IN ONTARIO!
PONIES24/7 RACING CLUB
‘FLAGSHIP’ BRAND OF HORSE RACING MEDIA AND BRANDING SITE OFFERING A UNIQUE WAY OF KEEPING HORSE RACING IN THE MAINSTREAM SPOTLIGHT
A new, exciting and affo
rdable approach to Thoroughbred and Standardbred horse ownership.
Ponies24/7 Racing Club, a division of PONIES 24-7 INC., conceived by horse racing media veteran Larry Simpson, announced today some further important u
pdates to its expected launch of the company’s unique horse racing ownership property that combines both Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses.
“The company was recently incorporat
ed, and Information Packages on ownership opportunities in our Ponies24/7 Racing Club have been readied and are available by contacting info@ponies247.com,” says ‘Club’ Racing Manager Larry Simpson, himself a past organizer of several General Pa
rtnership Racing Stables. “ In addition, we are looking forward to the launch of our fully interactive web site, www.ponies247.com, within the next few days. The site is designed to not only educate, but also increase potential branding opportunities while engaging horse racing fans of all ages in the center of the action including horse ownership and the lifestyle it promotes. Our s
ite will be all about, ‘out of the box thinking’ while providing a breath of fresh air for the horse racing industry!” says Simpson. Also, in what could be deemed as further significant news, Simpson noted that Ponies24/7 Racing Club recently signed agreements with its two trainers, Robert Young and Steven Chircop. “We believe that all of these announcements are key ‘steps’ in
moving forward and in making Ponies24/7 Racing Club a viable horse racing ownership initiative shortly,” he states.
Simpson believes that Ponies24/7 Racing Club will also play an integral part in racing’s future, including the important role of providing a ‘farm system’ model
found in other sports but somewhat lacking in horse racing. He says, “ One thing we tend to forget is that horse racing is a sport, and it needs to regularly promote itself to create popularity year-round. Unfortunately, there are only certain times of the year when horse racing seems to be in the spotlight for most people, and then quickly it falls off their sports radar. Our Racing C
lub is a creative approach to develop fans year-round, then take these fans and introduce them to ownership opportunities, as normally, people have to be fans first, before becoming a horse owner. In most cases, this is a long process that can take years to happen, if at all!
A Ponies24/7 Racing Club can ‘fast track’ this process, introduce and promote these opportunities in a unique and fashionable way. History has shown that partners in Rac
ing Stables, feel a sense of pride and ownership in ‘their’ horses, and feel the need to share this pride by inviting friends and families to the racetrack to watch one of ‘their’ horses race. Soon, these friends and family members invite someone because ‘their friend’ has a horse racing, and the process continues from there. It’s innocent networking, but it is the beginning o
f creating new racing ambassadors, and when you combine some unique branding and promotional methods with education, you have virtually developed a ‘farm system’ model for horse racing. You hope that they will like what they see, and will want to be part of an ownership lifestyle that a Ponies24/7 Racing Club, can provide. And by including both Thoroughbreds and Standardbr
eds in our Ponies24/7 Racing Club package, you are helping to deliver that year-round excitement that horse racing so desperately needs! “
Additionally, Simpson notes that another advantage of Ponies24/7 Racing Club is that it can offer someone with modest financial resources an opportunity to particip
ate as an owner, in most cases, at a higher level than they could ordinarily. He says too, that Racing Club’s have been well received in other racing jurisdictions around the world, where they serve the purpose of introducing both the new and experienced horse owner to a passionate lifestyle, and an exciting hobby that is full of opportunity!
