ARAGORN AMI BEATS HER FRIENDS IN MARTHA WASHINGTON
She went unsold at the CTHS Woodbine yearling sale 2 years ago: she was bought back for $30,000 by her breeder IVAN DALOS.
She went into the MARTHA WASHINGTON STAKES at Oaklawn Park yesterday with just a maiden win on Polytrack and was trying 1 mile and dirt for the first time.
But ARAGORN AMI could be any kind of filly as she won that $100,000 stakes race for Dalos and trainer JOSIE CARROLL and she is headed to the next race in the series, the HONEYBEE STAKES.
ARAGORN AMI (by top turfer Aragorn (Ire) is a 4th GENERATION runner for Dalos. The 4th dam, SILLY BILLIE, produced SYBELLE AMI (by Secret Claim) the 3rd dam of the 3yo filly. Sybelle Ami produced 6 winners including stakes winner SECRET AMI, the 2nd dam.
SECRET AMI is the dam of Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner VICTORIOUS AMI and the unraced GALLOPING AMI, the dam of Aragorn Ami.
Galloping Ami, by the Dalos-bred VICTORY GALLOP (he won the Belmont Stakes) has had 2 other foals, no other winners.
STORY FROM HOTSPRINGSDAILY.COM:
Ivan Dalos’ Aragorn Ami, making just her second career start, survived a rider’s objection to earn her first career stakes victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Martha Washington Stakes.
With leading rider Norberto Arroyo Jr. in the irons, Aragorn Ami assumed a stalking position in third behind the front-running Euphrosyne through an opening quarter mile in 23 3/5, moved into second before a half mile in 49 and drew off from her rival to win by 1 ½ lengths after gaining the lead at the top of the stretch. The winner drifted in slightly late, but the stewards found no reason for disqualification. She completed the one mile in 1:41 over a fast track.
“He (Arroyo) came down a little; enough to stop my filly’s forward momentum,” said Euphrosyne’s jockey Channing Hill. “It was just the greenness of the two fillies.”
“I did what I was told to do and laid right off the pace,” said Arroyo. “I worked this filly three times in the morning so I really got to know her.”

MATADOR 4TH – BEAR, 5TH in SAM F. DAVIS
Matador gets rival jockey’s whip on snout at top of stretch!
Canadian-bred colts MATADOR (Malibu Moon) and ASSERTING BEAR (Bear’s Kid) were 4th and 5th in the Sam F. Davis at 1 1.16 miles at Tampa Bay Downs yesterday behind the 1-2 finishers from the Todd Pletcher stable.
Matador, trained by Mark Casse, had a rally around the last turn and finished in a group that was just 1 length from the winner, Vinceramos (Pioneer ofthe Nile, also the sire of CAIRO PRINCE).
That was pretty good considering the colt was hit flush on his face by Joe Rocco Jr.’s whip off the turn (watch the video)
ASSERTING BEAR had a lovely stalking trip in 3rd but stalled in the stretch and was 3 3/4 lengths behind the winner. He is trained by Reade Baker for Bear Stables.
MATADOR received a career best 80 BEYER SPEED FIGURE, ASSERTING BEAR dipped a bit from his to with a 76.
