today’s news – JEWELS, BULLETS are sharp and shiny…Melbourne Cup field…keep reading Thoroughblog!
Careless Jewel
BREEDERS’ CUP LOOMS
Small Canadian contingent is big on power
There are few Canadian based horses in the Breeders’ Cup this year but what we do have is two very good chances to win 2 of the events on the 2-day series.
CARELESS JEWEL is 2nd favourite likely for the LADIE’S CLASSIC and how exciting for the Donver team of Donna and Verne Dubinsky, trainer Josie Carroll and jockey ROB LANDRY that ZENYATTA is not going in – she’ll try boys in the Classic instead.
Ms. Jewel should be very tough to beat in the Ladies Classic and could provide Landry and team with the biggest win of their careers.
Interesting to note that yu can buy SWEET AND CAREKESS, the filly’s dam, at the November sale next week. Offered by Windfield Farm through Brookdale as agent, Sweet and Careless is also the dam of former Woodbine claimer BLACK TEA – wonder if she is still owned by Albert Sanges?
FATAL BULLET is our other big hope and there were certainly mixed reviews about his final Cup workout on the weekend.
You can watch it on the video link below. Fatal Bullet reportedly always drifts out a bit in his works when he is not wearing blinkers – the blinkers he wears when he is focussed and set on racing.
Indeed the Bullet will be 1st or 2nd fave for Bear Stables, Reade Baker and jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva.
The TVG crew that poo-pooed the work by Fatal Bullet did not likely see his work last year before he was 2nd in the Sprint – it was similarly blase.
(And as one trainer said, YOU DON’T any Bentley’s in the parking lot OF TV HOSTS!)

TRIBAL BELLE sounds off, again
102 Beyer
She ran for $8,000 CLAIMING a year ago but yesterday at Woodbine, B.C.-bred TRIBAL BELLE ran a stunning 102 Beyer Figure in a win in the Ontario Fashion Stakes on a crisp, pleasant Nov. 1.
Similar to another Terry Jordan trainee, Hollywood hit, the filly just ran her rivals into the ground on a track that simply was not very fast.
The daughter of Tribunal threw down the gauntlet early, establishing
splits of :21.92 and :44.64. In the stretch, she stayed on well for her
fourth score of the season from five starts.
A four-year-old filly , Tribal Belle zipped six furlongs in 1:08.84, finishing 3 1/4 lengths in front of Glitter Rox.
Porte Bonheur was third.
“I was able to give her a breather around the turn,” said winning
jockey Jim McAleney. “She was very comfortable from the three-eighths
pole to the quarter pole. She re-broke at the head of the stretch. She’s
got that talent where she has a high cruising speed. She’s a
powerhouse.”
Trainer Terry Jordan said it didn’t worry him that Tribal Belle worked
four furlongs in just :51 2/5, breezing, on October 24.
“She won’t work unless she has another horse with her,” said Jordan.
“She seems to show up all the time. It doesn’t concern us when she
doesn’t work well.”
The Ontario Fashion was the second consecutive added-money score for
Tribal Belle, who won the Grade 3 Seaway by a neck.
Tribal Belle returned $5.60, $2.90 and $2.30, combining with Glitter
Rox ($4.90, $3.10) for a $29.70 exactor. Porte Bonheur ($2.50) rounded
out a triactor worth $66.10. A $1 superfecta returned $114.25.
Jimmy Simms takes Labeeb
TORONTO, November 1 – The Elisabeth Alexander and Burr J.
Travis-owned Jimmy Simms led from gate to wire in Sunday’s $106,400
Labeeb Stakes at Woodbine.
Jimmy Simms established easy early fractions over the ‘good’ going and
held off a determined challenge from the event’s defending champion Just
Rushing, who was second by a head. River Heights was third.
The running time for one-mile was 1:38.07.
For trainer Roger Attfield, the Labeeb was his 12th added-money score
of the season at the Toronto oval, moving him back into a tie with
Malcolm Pierce, who had gone ahead on Saturday when Points of Grace won
the River Memories.
Jimmy Simms established easy early fractions over the ‘good’ going and
held off a determined challenge from the event’s defending champion Just
Rushing, who was second by a head. River Heights was third.
The close result caught winning jockey Jono Jones a bit off guard
because Jimmy Simms hadn’t been asked to run until the late stages of
the one-mile event.
“He relaxed through slow fractions,” said Jones. “I knew I was moving
and (Just Rushing) was coming on the outside. I was surprised.”
The victory is the first career stakes score for the bay Lost Soldier
colt, who is now 5-for-12 lifetime with an impressive 4-for-6 record
over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.
Jimmy Simms entered the Labeeb off a two-month freshening. The
Kentucky-bred colt’s most recent start was a sixth-place finish in the
Play the King.
“His last race we rated him a bit, which was a mistake,” said Attfield.
“I blamed the course being soft, but I think it was probably the way we
went about it. It didn’t look like there was any pace in here, outside
of him. We let him run his race and he ran tough.”
The four-year-old is the 12th different horse from the Attfield barn to
capture a Woodbine added-money event in 2009.
Jimmy Simms returned $6.90, $4.70 and $3.30, combining with Just
Rushing ($6.70, $3.80) for a $38.40 exactor. River Heights ($6.20)
rounded out a triactor worth $273.
DYNA STROLL WASN’T TO BE DENIED IN 50th RUNNING OF THE ASCOT GRADUATION
Huitzilophochti beaten!
Vancouver, B.C. (Oct. 25/09) –Dyna Stroll had been chasing the opposition so much this year he could hardly be blamed for developing a complex. But his confidence was overflowing Sunday in winning the $100,000 AscotGraduation at Hastings Racecourse.
After losing to favoured Huitzilopochtli in three previous races, Dyna Stroll overcame a wide trip to beat
Silly Fella by two and one quarter lengths in a final time of 1:47.23. Huitzilophochti, winner of five
consecutive races, was running at a mile and sixteenth for the first time in his career Sunday and was finished after three quarters.
Trained by Troy Taylor, Dyna Stroll also gained a measure of revenge after finishing second to Silly Fella in
the Jack Diamond Futurity earlier this month. Winning jockey Mario Guitierrez had told owners Glen Todd and
Patrick Kinsella earlier that he thought Dyna Stroll would be a major threat with the added distance.
Dyna Stroll paid $9.60, $4.90 and $13.50 to show due some heavy wagering on Huitzilopochtli, running in a
three-horse entry, to finish in the top three.
Ebony N Ice bided her time and came from well off the pace to beat Victorious Vye by one and one quarter
lengths in Saturday’s $100,000 Fantasy Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.
Jockey Quincy Welch, who had three winners on the day, took advantage of an early speed duel involving odds-on favourite Vying Ty Grr and Clandestiny to win the one mile and one sixteenth feature in a final time of 1:48.05.
Ebony N Ice, trained by Barbara Heads, earned $60,000 for owner Leif Nordahl and paid $15.30, $4.90 and $4.20.

SIDNEY MORNING HERALD
Bart The Miracle Worker
Bart Cummings prowess as a thoroughbred horse trainer and his iconic stature in Australian racing is beyond
doubt – the accolade just gets tested every now and then.
Such is the case with the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. Bart has won twelve Cups, a record that will probably never be bettered but the scary thing is that after today he could have a “baker’s dozen” of Cups on the
mantelpiece.
Fresh from another big race quinella, Viewed and Roman Emperor doing the honours in the Caulfield Cup a couple Of weeks back, Bart has the same pair primed to repeat the dose in the Melbourne Cup today.
The only trouble is, history is against all three events.
Last years Cup winner Viewed will be the first horse in history to win the Melbourne Cup one year and then
follow up with the Cups double the following year.
The only AJC Derby winner to win a Melbourne Cup as a four-year-old the following year was the immortal Phar Lap in 1929. Hall Mark did it as a three-year-old in 1933, so 2009 AJC Derby winner Roman Emperor will need to break an 80 year hoodoo if successful.
