IT’S A BABY BEAR! The first foal from Ontario sire KENTUCKY BEAR arrived at Curraghmore Farm recently. The little one is out of BEAR DIXIE CAT and both sire, dam and baby are owned by Danny Dion’s Bear Stable.

My name is Mary Mansfield, and I have just received my 2nd edition of Canadian Thoroughbred, and I love it!!
I am a great fan of horses/Thoroughbreds, Northern Dancer in particular.
In the Feb.edition, in your editorial, it is stated that you are going to review the past 50 years starting with 1961. I hope I am not being too presumptuous, but I imagine that you would be including Northern Dancer? That would be great!!
I have followed ND’s career and his progeny. Every time I go the Bloodhorse.com site to check on the races, I make it a habit of checking the pedigree of the winner.
I have two books about Northern Dancer, great reads. The next step, I think, is that someone in the movie making field, should make a film about his story as well. There are many films about other racehorses, Man-O-War, Seabiscuit, and just recently Secretariat so, why not?! After reading the books about ND, I found there are quite a few different interesting facts that would come together to make an informative, interesting and entertaining movie!
Oh well, maybe being a Canadian star would not be of much interest to American audiences, for that is where most films are more or less geared to. I am profoundly sorry if I have stepped out of line on this, but that is the way I feel about it.

BOMBS AWAY! CHIEFSWOOD FILLY HITS AT 35 TO 1
KINDERSLEY, one of a few Chiefswood Stable runners south of the border and a non-Canadian-bred, won her maiden at Gulfstream yesterday at 35 to 1 after a soft seasonal debut last month.
The $350,000 yearling purchase is by Bernardini out of Home Court and she is trained by Mike Matz.
Chiefswood, located in Loretto and King, Ontario, is ina rebuilding stage following the replaceent of trainer Eric Coatrieux and the addition of manager, former rider Robert Landry.
The filly’s one mile victory resulted in a 77 Beyer Figure.
EMMA SINKS HER TEETH INTO FISHING
Champion jockey EMMA-JAYNE WILSON tried her hand at fishing in Florida yesterday and is shown here with SPINNER SHARK, that was later let go..
Wilson had a good but short meeting at Parz Racing but the numerous cancellations led to her heading to Palm Meadows to finish preparing for 2011 at Woodbine

Rogue Romance tops morning line for Risen Star on Saturday at the Fair Grounds

Rogue Romance, who hasn’t raced since finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite in a field of 10 3-year-olds entered Monday for the $300,000 Risen Star Stakes on Saturday at the Fair Grounds.
The first three horses in the morning line will be invading from Florida. Mucho Macho Man is next in the early odds at 4-1, and Decisive Moment is rated at 9-2.
The Grade II Risen Star is among six stakes races, four of them graded, on a 12-race card billed as Louisiana Derby Preview Day.
Ken McPeek, who trains Rogue Romance, also trains the favorite for the Rachel Alexandra on Saturday. Kathmanblu, who has won three stakes, including the Grade II Golden Rod, is the morning-line favorite in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies entered in that Grade III race.
In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Rogue Romance raced on dirt for the first time. He finished 10 ¼ lengths behind winner Uncle Mo, who was the champion 2-year-old last year..

CHARLES TAYLOR PRIZE
for literary non-fiction
A little under five years ago, Charles Foran travelled to Montreal and met with Mordecai Richler’s widow, Florence. He intended to write Richler’s biography, but first sought Florence’s co-operation on the project. They spent an afternoon wandering around the city -she even took him to visit her husband’s grave -and at the end of their time together, Florence turned to Foran and declared herself satisfied.
“I’ll speak with you,” she said.
Foran recalled this conversation Monday as he accepted the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction for his book Mordecai: The Life and Times, a sprawling biography of one of Canada’s literary greats that was four years in the making.
“I’m eternally grateful to Florence,” he said. “She made this book, not once, not twice, but three times as good as it would have been otherwise.”
He ended his speech with a toast to the memory of Mordecai Richler, who died in July 2001 at the age of 70.
