FRIDAY WRAP AT WOODBINE

RACE 1 – a race can’t get any more more bizarre than this, at least from a set-up point of view. The 1 1/8 mile race for $10,000 claimers went exactly in standardbred horse time…27 1/5 53 3/5, 1:18..it really was something to sit and scratch your head at. Not sure if it was the condition of the track as well as the bizarre riding tactics.

Of course, to make things even weirder, the leader, even-money shot WONDER PHIL could not stay and faded to 4th while ALPHANUMERIC came from off the pace to win for Six Brothers Stable and trainer Bill Tharrenos. Matt Moore rode the 5yo gelding who is now 3 for 23 in his career.

Race 2 – The gallent old MEDIDOCIHOSPISURG (a medical term) won for $15,000 claiming at 7 furlongs, his first win  since October 2011. Now owned and trained by Steven Chircop, this 8-year-old  is now 8 for 54 in his career with over $415,000 in career earnings.

Race 3 – IT MIGHT GET LOUD came back on at the wire to edge MISSY BEAR and win her maiden for $20,000 claiming. The winner is owned/trained and bred by Ken Parsley and she is by Forest Danger out of Sheza a Nina Plus. Danny David was winng his 2nd race of the year on the 3yo chestnut filly.

Race 4 – SILENT LOVE led most of the way through 1 1/8 miles on the grass to win an allowance race to start the Pick 4. At 6 to 5 the daughter of Silent Name (Jpn) out of Parisian Profit by Bold Executive is yet another Ontario sired star for trainer Robert Tiller, who was decked out in a sharp blue shirt that matched the winner’s silks. The winners – 3 Sons Racing Stables, bought this filly for $32,000 as a yearling and she is 2 for 5 in her career with over $70,000 in earnings.

Race 5 – what a walk in the park for GLOBAL EXPRESS, a Street sense – Leaveminthedust by Danzig 3yo colt, who won by a pole in the maiden allowance on turf. owned by My Meadowview Farm and trained by Roger Attfield, this colt was 4th in a maiden allowance on Polytrack last time out, only his 2nd career race. Surely this colt is a serious contender for the Breeders’ Stakes. Bill Graham bred the bay.

Race 6 – maiden allowance – Ontario sired older guys and DENIM BAY rallied from off the pace to win his maiden by a disappearing head over Iroquois Falls. The winner is by Survivalist – Pearls and Jeans by Sky Classic (long distances are in his genes) and he is a homebred for Paul Buttieig, who was not int he win picture. Dave Moran rode the winner who was making his 4th career start.

race 7 Miraculous win by MARCIAN, a filly by Roman Ruler out of Mesarose by Deputy Commander. This gal has lost twice as favourite this year in 4 races and had been 11th and 13th out of the gate from wide posts in her last 2 starts for $9,500 claiming.
Not a lot was different on this day as she went straight up in the air at the start but jockey Todd Kabel hustled her and got her into a 4 path stalking trip. She battled for the lead off the turn and held on to win at 7 to 1. Don MacRae owns and trains the filly.

Race 8 – It was a STORMY ATLANTIC/BEAR late double as BEAR’S TAURUS won the 8th to give trainer Jamie Attard his first win of the year and he also owns this 4yo. The gelding was claimed for $20,000 in December from Bear Stables and he had been 3rd in both races in 2013. He was ridden by Tyler Pizarro who just kept the pretty, white faced son of Stormy Atlantic parked in the back for as long as possible and despite slow pace splits (but the track is very slow), he got out of a traffic jam and blew by for a big score.

Race 9 – BEAR’S DIXIE was well prepared to win her first race of the year and only 2nd career start. The homebred for Bear Stables was well rated by Emma-Jayne Wilson and then powered through late to win the 6 furlong turf dash by a head at 5 to 1. Reade Baker trains the filly.

WEEKEND AT WOODBINE

Whose the smarty pants now?

Guess it is Ben Hutzel and Robert Tiller who coddled NIKKIS SMARTYPANTS from the June 15 season opening win to July 28 and a Grade 3 stakes win.

A miraculous move to beat a decent field as this 4yo had only won 2 allowance races and was making her first start on the grass. She rode the rail to the Royal North win, beating shipper SENSIBLE LADY, who broke very slowly. It was a weird kind of race as the closers did not have it on a grass course that seemed to have a bit of give it to. The winning Beyer was 82.

The winner was a $47,000 yearling purchase and is by Smarty Jones from Scarlet Slipper out of Red Ransonm. The breeders were Gardiner Farms and Whodat Racing LLC.

The other stakes race this weekend was the TORONTO CUP and in a monsoon, FIVE IRON drove the green, leading all the way to win his 2nd stakes race in succession for Fred Allor. He is a Sharp Humor colt who certainly is making a name for champion 3yo of the year.

So who is hotter than jockey EMMA-JAYNE WILSON or trainer IAN BLACK right now…perhaps KEVIN ATTARD?

Trainer Attard won 2 races on Saturday and Sunday,  also finishing 2nd twice including with the sturdy gal WHY KATHERINE in the Royal North.

Sunday’s child for Kevin was MALIBU SKYLINE, who sizzled an 81 Beyer in a win for $25,000. The gelding was a $20K claim in May but he had lots his rider and been well beaten in 2 races since the claim. He made up for it on Sunday for owners Cory Hoffman and Stephen Chesney. One of his Saturday winners was BERLE MOWAT’S JOYFUL CHEERS, who was a popular winner for $19,000 claiming in race 2.

Race 10 – TURKISH, is 2 for 2 on the Woodbine grass this season. The beautiful Istan gelding won his maiden 2 starts back by 6 with Wilson on board and then won an allowance race on Sunday as Wilson wrapped up 4 wins on the day and the late Double.

Reade Baker trains Turkish for Brereton Jones.

MORE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

– trainer GORD COLBOURNE won his first race of the year when MAIL ORDER GROOM, owned by Shirley Prosser’s Box Arrow Farm, won his maiden for $20K in his 5th race of the year.

Also winning for the first time this year is FRANK HUARTE, who claimed ACTIONONTWO for $20,000 on June 28 and won with her for $37,500 on the grass. The Artie Schiller filly is a stakes placed gal from last season.

SPADINA ROAD won his 2yo debut for Rolph Davis and trainer Bob Tiller. The Where’s the Ring colt was bred by Minshall Farms and was a $77,000 yearling purchase. He is a half brother to Casa Loma, whom Davis raced with success before she died earlier this year.

DON PLETERSKI won his first race of the season when Merbyn Kirby’s homebred filly ROCK’S SWEET THING won a maiden allowance, race 7 at 4 to 5. The Rock and Roll filly was making her 10th career start.

CLASSIC LADEDAH was another 2yo winner for WHERE’S THE RING as she won her 2nd career start for Martha Gonzalez and Ada and Larry Harvey. She was a $22K yearling purchase and was bred by Paradox Farm.

Ontario bred MR SUTTON won an open maiden allowance in race 5 for John Russell and Goerge Shramm. The $75K yearling is by Shakespeare out of Forever Red by Red Ransom and he was making his 2nd career start.

NORM MCKNIGHT won his first race of the meeting when URBAN FORESTER, owned by Bruno Schickedanz, won a $20K claiming race on Saturday, race 7. The flashy 5yo gelding is 2 for 2 off the claim.

And congrats to MANE STREAM RACING and trainer Bev Chubb. The 6yo gelding RON C relished the wet and sloppy Polytrack and won his maiden in his 2nd start this season. He is by Theatromania out of Aftica by Barbeau.
