ONTARIO DAMSEL, ONTARIO MATRON AND VICTORIA at Woodbine this weekend
Big fields and cooler weather – -a great weekend for racing at Woodbine.
The 3-year-old fillies will go 1 mile on the grass in the Ontario Damsel today for $150,000 and is a wide open event with last year’s 2yo stakes winner SPARKLES’ GIRL making her season debut and turf debut (she is by Society’s Chairman who loved grass) taking on SWOOP AND STRIKE from Sam-Son Farms (troubled trip last time in her grass debut and gets blinkers)( and the very interesting CALLING RHY RHY, owned by Robert Harvey and a filly by top turf sire City Zip.
Also in the mix is DUBLIN DIVA, coming out of the Woodbine Oaks and moving to grass (by Leroisdesanimaux).
On Sunday, race 4 is the VICTORIA STAKES for 2-year-olds. It was run on the grass last year but is on tapeta this year at 6 furlongs. This is another fun race to handicap with only 2 winners in the field – JUNKET, who won nicely for $50K claiming and is by the promising young sire Algorithms, and Presque Isle invader DAHOG, who won on July 3 and is by Canadian bred sire Daaher.
The much talked about beginner ARCEN (Pioneer of the Nile) has post 2 and has Jesse Campbell on board for Robert Marzilli and trainer Mike DePaulo and the lovely colt LOKINFORPURSEMONEE is another major player from post 3 for John Ross.
JUROJIN, a debut winner, was in the paper this week as he is owned by 5-year-old Sarah Ladouceur and her grandmother Sandra Bird.
Later on Sunday, the Ontario Matron Stakes is a Grade 3 at 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta for fillies and mares and the red hot HOT KISS, from the Mike DePaulo barn, goes for her 6th straight win and 2nd stakes race and she has to get past FLIPCUP (5 for 7 on synethetic dirt) from the Bill Mott barn.
FRIDAY AT WOODBINE
Congratulations to Robert Smith who sent out his first winner of the meeting in race 1, a 5 1/2 furlong Euro Turf dash for maiden fillies, $30,000 claiming. Smith put DEVILISH STYLE on the grass for the first time and while the filly blew the first bend and lost ground, her rider Jeff Alderson got her straightened out and she won the battle with Lucky Emerald all the way to the wire. Kanny Ng’s Castle Peak Farm is the owner and breeder of this 4yo by Like the Prospects.
The time was listed as 1:09.02 for 5 1/2 furlongs but it appears that a correction may be made.
Race 2- Sean Selose’s IPHIKLES dropped to claiming for the first time since his maiden win last fal and won at 15 to 1 in this $20,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. It marked a Daily Double for jocke Alderson, who rode this Niigon gelding from off the pace for trainer Ashlee Brnjas.
Race 3- an allowance race at 7 furlongs for fillies and mares and the red-hot WESTLODGE INTRIGUE did not mind coming back to action in 13 days as she grabbed the lead turning for home and drew away under Sheena Ryan. Owned by Stacey Van Camp and traine dby Mike Mattine, this is a Niigon filly who was 3rd in the Passing Mood Stakes in her last race and she won over $52,000 for this win (since she was Ontario bred and sired). She has won $93,000 this year from 4 races. A $6,000 purchase from the HIll ‘n’ Dale consignment 2 years ago at the local yearling sale, Westlodge Intrigue was bred by Phil Katryan, Ravi Sugrim and Joannie Dass.
4 – at 16 to 1 CLEARER VIEW led all the way through 1 1/8 miles of turf and won his first race a short layoff for Network Srtables and Ryan Kerbel. Denyse McClachrie trains and this grey gelding, a son of Tapit, had been racing well in Florida on turf when claimed for $16,000. This was a $40,00 claiming race and Gary Boulanger rode the winner.
The gelding earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure according to DRF.
Race 5- It did not matter than she had the rail post for her debut in a big field of 2yo fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs. Nor did it matter her sire, Marchfield, had never had a 2yo debtu winner from 36 previous starters or that she has the unfortunate name of NERVE LINE. This filly was gone from the start and won big for owner Andrae Gordon and trainer Mike McDonald for $40,000 claiming. A $4,000 purchase at the CTHS sale last fall, she was bred by Joe Pirone and is from the family of all those useful ‘San Nicola’ horses.
Race 6- at 1 1/8 miles, CAMP CREEK, a very handsome and cute light grey, loved stretching out and loved the grass as he rallied to win big under Patrick Husbands for Garland Williamson’s Hillsbrook Farm and trainer Rachel Halden. He is a 3yo by Dunkirk out of Go Go Neigh by Storm Boot and it was his 3rd career race and first with Lasix.
Race 7 – ETHANOL is now a 4-time winner at Woodbine with this remarkable win off a week rest and up in class off the claim from $6,000 to $12,500. Vito Armata took the 6yo Marcavelly gelding off a 3-race winning streak. The gelding is now 7 for 19
Race 8 – classy SNOWY LEGACY rode the rail and won this allowance race for his 2nd win in 3 races this year. With jockey Steve Bahen up, the flashy chestnut by Milwaukee Brew raced just twice in 2015, in the fall, but has been brought along well by trainer John Charalambous for owner Kirk Bradden Stables. Snowy is 3 for 10 in his career.
He posted a career best 80 Beyer Figure for this win.
Race 9 – the turf course favours speed when the rails are out and that left even-money favoe Golden Spear in a tough spot. That Stronach Stables’ gelding ran well but he could not catch LONG JOHNS who made an early move to the lead and won big for Doug Anderson and Riya Eskudt who bred the son of Bob and John. Catherine Day Phillips notched her 8th win of what has been a super season so far and Eurico da Silva picked up the win.
PRINCE OF WALES has 8 NOMINEES
NIIGON’S EDGE is a new shooter who will take on the boys in the Prince of Wales a week from Tuesday at Fort Erie.
Stuart Simon told TALKIN HORSES on CTV this morning about the 3yo’s chances in the race.

TOBA BLOG – A PLATE DAY EXPERIENCE
BY CHRISTINA BOSSINKIS

JULY 7, 2016
This season’s 157th renewal of the Queen’s Plate promised to be a competitive affair with no less than eight of the 13 sophomores starting at 20-1 or less and six of those going off at 10-1 or less. Restricted to Canadian-bred 3-year- olds, the $1,000,000 Classic is Canada’s equivalent of America’s Kentucky Derby, which is also contested at 1 ¼ miles. This year, Team Canada offered strong representation, including the 5-2 Plate favorite Amis Gizmo, victorious in all four starts at two, and the winner of his latest start in the June 12 Plate Trial; and Shakhimat—representing Plate record-holding trainer Roger Attfield– who took down the G3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland in April. However, it was the American power duo of Ken Ramsey and trainer Mike Maker that came to town to garner the lion’s share of the purse. A member of the first crop of turf champion Gio Ponti, Sir Dudley Digges closed from just off the pace to collect a narrow score over Amis Gizmo. On hand for the big win, owner Ken Ramsey led his first Plate winner into the winner’s circle with his customary zeal and enthusiasm, and it appeared that Sir Dudley D might have been caught up in the moment as well as he swerved, landing his owner square under his belly. Since it wasn’t Mr. Ramsey’s first rodeo (nor his first tumble), the octogenarian emerged with his sense of humor intact as he soldiered on with the celebratory festivities.
