Track’s premier race set to go
Posted By JOHN LAW, SUN MEDIA
It’s the Prince of Wales that nearly wasn’t.
After a winter of financial discontent, the Fort Erie Race Track will once again offer its premier event of the season Sunday when the second jewel in Canada’s Triple Crown of Racing returns.
About 7,000 people will pack the track for the 74th Prince of Wales Stakes, with six horses vying for the $500,000 purse.
Race Track director of communications Daryl Wells Jr. calls it a huge day for the venue.
“Everything goes up — the wagering goes up, food and beverage sales go up,” he said. “More than anything, it’s just a real exciting day.
“Prince of Wales day might bring out 2,000 people that come (to the track) once a year. It’s like the summer place to be in Fort Erie.”
Post positions were drawn during a media event yesterday: 1. Flip for the Coin, 2. Milwaukee Appeal, 3. Gallant, 4. Mr. Foricos Two U, 5. Eye of the Leopard and 6. Keino West.
Yesterday’s morning line had Eye of the Leopard listed as the early favourite at 9/5. Under jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva, the horse won the Queen’s Plate — the first race of the Triple Crown — at Woodbine June 21.

Trainer keeps Eye on Canada’s Triple Crown
By ROB LONGLEY, SUN MEDIA
The easy part for Queen’s Plate champion Eye of the Leopard is that he will face a tiny field of five other three-year-olds in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
The tougher part is he’ll have to take on the two horses who finished right behind him in the Plate when he heads to Fort Erie for Sunday’s $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes as the 9-5 morning-line favourite.
Trainer Mark Frostad believes the son of A.P. Indy is up for the challenge.
“He’s an improving horse who gets better every time he runs,” Frostad said. “I was worried he may not be seasoned enough (in the Plate). He was still a little green. You could see that in the stretch. He started drifting out and . . . it nearly cost us the race.”

Odds are Big Three will contend at Prince of Wales
By Robert J. Summers
NEWS SPORTS REPORTER
FORT ERIE, Ont. — At the finish of the Queen’s Plate at Toronto’s Woodbine, you could have thrown a blanket over the first three horses across the line. Fort Erie Race Track odds-maker Jerry Davis thinks there’s very little to separate that same trio when they meet again Sunday in the Prince of Wales Stakes.
On Wednesday afternoon, Davis pegged the threesome at almost the closest morning-line odds spread possible. He made Plate winner Eye of the Leopard the 9-5 favorite and, following their order of Plate finish, quoted Mr. Foricos Two U at 2-1 and Milwaukee Appeal at 5-2.

Dirt the unknown factor in Prince of Wales
By Bill Tallon
FORT ERIE, Ontario – Eye of the Leopard, winner of the 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on June 21, has been made the 9-5 favorite to take down the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales Stakes here at Fort Erie on Sunday.
A field of six was announced Wednesday for the $500,000 Prince of Wales, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.
Joining Eye of the Leopard will be Queen’s Plate returnees Mr. Foricos Two U, Milwaukee Appeal, Flip for the Coin, and Keino West, plus recent Woodbine maiden winner Gallant.
All will be making their first starts on dirt in the Prince of Wales, which is the showpiece of the Fort Erie meeting.
Eye of the Leopard, a neck winner of the Queen’s Plate for trainer Mark Frostad and jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva, drew post 5 for the Prince of Wales.
“Perfect,” Frostad said. “We’ve got the speed inside of us. We’ll be able to sit and see what happens.”

ATTACK MODE
WOODBINE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
LADY ATTACK (Mutakddim) crushed the course record for 6 1/2 furlongs on turf last night when she flew through the stretch to win the REPERCUSSION STAKES at Woodbine.
A Kentucky bred 5-year-old, owned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings Inc. and trained by Josie Carroll, Lady Attack came from well back, rallied wide beside Hello Maggie May, left that one in the dust as she turned on the jets in the stretch under Patrick Husbands to outnod SASKAWEA at the wire.
The runner-up had just won the Zadracarta Stakes on turf and was the favourite.
LADY ATTACK came to Woodbine this spring.
She had races in 2007 as a 3yo and was graded stakes place at Saratoga on turf but missed almost 2 years of racing before she returned in 2009.
She just won an allowance/optional claimer at Woodbine at 1 1/16 miles.
Her time of 1:13.50 beat the record of 1:13 4/5.
Her Beyer Figure was a fat 97.
LEARNING CURVE
Trainer BARB MINSHALL and owner JANET JEANPIERRE have had their share of ups and downs with the sleek chestnut gelding PARABOLA, bred by Jeanpierre.
A stakes winner at 2 last year, the gelding never came to hand ths spring when trying to get on the Queen’s Plate trail and he was last in 3 consecutive Polytrack stakes races.
He had a bad reaction to Lasix before his last race (which came off the grass) and then logged hours of gate and paddock schooling before his grass debut last night – an allowance race.
That’s when things got interesting.
Feeling obviously quite frisky (mischievous?) the son of Trajectory threw jockey Chantal Sutherland in the paddock, ran loose, into the bushes and just about got away for good.
“I thought he was going in the parking lot,” said Minshall on The Score Cable show last night.
Sweaty and perhaps a bit rattled, the gelding didn’t want to go in the gate either.
But on the grass, it was a brand new Parabola.
The son of turf winning mare Flying Tabriz rallied inside to win the 1 1/16 mile alowance over Silent Knight in 1:41.17.
He earned an 82 Beyer Figure, the best of his career.
MORE STORIES FROM LAST NIGHT
Trainer FRANCESCA ARMATA and jockey CATHERINE O’BRIEN combined with SECRET TRAIL at 25 to 1 to win their first races of the meeting in a $12,500 claimer, race 5.
The Foxtrail filly led all the way through 7 furlongs with the drop from $20,000 to $12,500, which obviously helped her rebound from the 12th beaten 25 3/4 lengths outing in her season debut.
Owned and bred by Alpine Stables, the filly was the first winner for apprentice O’Brien, whobroke her leg last October at Fort Erie.
NO MORE TURBO PICK 6
Woodbine Press release:
Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) is suspending its Turbo-charged Pick 6 wager promotion…for now.
“We’re putting the Turbo-charged aspect of the Pick 6 wager on hold, but are considering bringing it back for special events or something more regular later in the season,” said Sean Pinsonneault, WEG’s Vice-President of Wagering Services.
The Turbo-charged Pick 6, a bet in which horseplayers are asked to select the winners of six consecutive races, was offered over three straight Sundays, beginning on June 21, the day of the 150th edition of the Queen’s Plate.
As promotion for the Turbo-charged Pick 6, WEG added $150,000 to the carryover. If the Pick 6 was won, the pool was re-seeded with another $150,000 for the following week.
“We wanted to promote our Pick 6 wager and felt seeding the pool with $150,000 would raise eyebrows, and it sure did,” continued Pinsonneault. “It created the buzz we were looking for and encouraged racing fans and horsemen that weren’t already familiar with the Woodbine Thoroughbred product to experience our racing with consistently large fields and one of the largest purse structures in North American racing.”
The Turbo-charged Pick 6 was paid out on each Sunday the added $150,000 was offered.
On the first afternoon (June 21) of the bet, one fan, from the United States, collected $203,499.40. On June 28, another American hit it for $153,884.20. On July 5, four happy fans, three from Canada and another from the U.S., had the Pick 6 for $46,982.90 each.
“It would have been nice to see it carryover a few days from our perspective but clearly some pretty savvy players were able to walk away with some significant jackpots,” said Pinsonneault, “and that’s ultimately what we were trying to create. We’re happy for those that cashed tickets on the Turbo-charged Pick 6.”
A $2 Pick 6 wager will remain on the Woodbine betting menu every Sunday without the seeded carryover beginning July 12 and continue to cover the final six races on the Thoroughbred card.
WYARD INJURED
-Woodbine apprentice jockey Beth Wyard will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking her ankle in a training mishap.
Wyard, 23, landed awkwardly after her mount reared up during morning training at Woodbine.
“She’s in good spirits and she’s looking forward to getting back into action as soon as possible,” said her agent, Tony Esposito, also the agent for the injured Chad Beckon.
The native of Cambridge, Ontario began her riding career last October at Woodbine, finishing second with 24-1 Rich Era in her first race on Oct. 26. Her first win came with 11-1 Chatty Cat on Nov. 19, also at the Toronto oval.
