WOODBINE WRAPS
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
THURSDAY’s main track was certainly speed favouring – it favoured speed runners at any kind of odds. It was a pleasant day with little wind but horses that went to the lead were winning a lot and those who did not lead all the way were within 2 lengths of the leaders in the early parts of the races.
The first race went to the big favourite SHOW ME THE RING, the first winner of the meeting for trainer BILLY THARRENOS. The Where’s the Ring 2yo won for $25,000 claiming in her 2nd career start.
In that race, Mobil’s Holly got loose before the race, ran about halfway around the track before she was caught anf then raced.
Beginner MOLLYGOLLY, who was heavily bet, had a weird race as she had speed, dropped back and then re-rallied for 3rd.
Jockey TODD KABEL won 3 races as he continues a whirlwind return to riding after missing a lot of time the last year or so. In race 3 he steered ESSENCE HIT MAN to his maiden win in start no. 2 for Audre and Gord Cappucitti. The Speightstown colt was adding blinkers and Lasix and he ran in 57 1/5.
FRIDAY
The power of the key race – race 1 went to 8 to 1 shot BEAUSEANT from the Joe walls barn. She was coming out of a CARELESS JEWEL key race (that one went on to win the Delaware Oaks) and had been freshened. She won the allowance race over 2 to 5 shot Politelyprecocious.
She is a Tapit filly (also the sire of Careless Jewel).
The BEV CHUBB barn is on a roll with 2 wins this week. WHITEBET’NTHEEYES, a flashy chesnut by Theatromania, owned and byed by Mane Stream Racing, won a close photo over a very game MUFASA CAT in the $16K maiden claimer – race 2.
LADY SHAKESPEARE ran a miraculous race to win the 3rd race – the prep for the Ontario Colleen Stakes. The Theatrical – Lady Shirl gal, who went to Saratoga for a stake only to have it washed off the grass, came from last place behind a slow pace to win the $101,100 event y 1/2 a length over stakes winner Mullins Beach, who had a long lead late.
The winner is a Charles Fipke homebred trained by Roger Attfield.
The Kirk Bradden Stable, who own stakes winner London Snow, may have another nice one in the barn. NOCOOKIESFORPAPA (odd name) led all the way to win her 2yo debut yesterday in an Ontario sired allowance. Bred by Mark Hughes, the One Way Love filly is out of stakes mare So Say All Of Us and she was a $29,994 (US) yearlong purchase.
John Charalambous trains.
What’s got into NALEE’S CROWN? The Hold That Tiger Kentucky bred was win shy for the longest time and having trouble breaking through for 425,00 claiming 2 starts ago.
Now, the filly has won 2 straight races for Dave Cotey and his team including a win in a tough entry level allowance yesterday. A $6,500 purchase, she beat $800,000 filly AURORA LIGHTS (Pulpit) and $350,000 filly WEEKEND STRIKE (sMART sTRIKE).
The last race of the day went to MERKEL, doubling up and winning for $20K claiming in 1:09 4/5 by 8 lengths.
For the 2nd day, the Polytrack was better for horses on or very close to the pace.

NYRA RELEASE
CANADIAN-BRED SOLITAIRE WINS FEATURE
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Jockey Julien Leparoux and Solitaire made a perfect pair in the 6th edition of the $89,700 John’s Call Stakes on Friday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, rallying from off the pace and going on to a three-quarter length victory over longshot Southwest in the 1 5/8ths-mile turf race.
Trained by H. James Bond, the 4-year-old son of Victory Gallop cruised along at the back of the pack as Mission Approved towed the field of 10 through fractions of 50.39, 1:40.64 and 2:04.89. Turning for home, Leparoux swung Solitaire to the outside and he responded with a solid late kick to hit the wire in 2:40.56 over a course rated “firm.”
“I waited to make sure he was relaxed,” said Leparoux of Solitaire, who gave the jockey his third winner of the afternoon. “Every time a horse was next to him, he was pulling, so I took him to last. At the quarter pole, I was close to (leader Mission Approved). Everything opened and we got a perfect trip.”
The victory was the third in 10 lifetime starts for Solitaire, who returned $13 for a $2 win bet and earned $53,820 for his owner, William L. Clifton, Jr. The gelding, who broke his maiden last fall at Belmont Park, was coming off a similarly late-running victory at Woodbine in his most recent start.
“This horse has the pedigree, and [he went] a mile and a quarter at Woodbine that last time,” said Bond. “I think Julien, on the grass, going a distance is just unbelievable. I told him if you can get this horse to relax, that he’d come with a flurry.”
PARAGALLO UPDATE
NEW YORK TIMES
Paragallo, Horse Breeder, Is Indicted on Animal Cruelty Charges
By JOE DRAPE
Published: August 6, 2009
Ernie Paragallo, a prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner who was already facing 22 counts of animal cruelty, was indicted Thursday on 35 counts in all by a Greene County grand jury that found he continued to neglect his horses.
Paragallo’s Center Brook Farm in Climax, N.Y., was raided in April, and he was charged with 22 counts of animal cruelty after the New York State Police and the Humane Society/Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Greene and Columbia Counties found that many of his more than 170 horses were malnourished.
Paragallo, 51, will be arraigned Aug. 18. He is free on $5,000 bail.
“Obviously we are disappointed,” Paragallo’s lawyer, Michael Howard, said by e-mail. “A trial will bring out more of the evidence, and the people will have a much more difficult time proving their case.”
