Eaton Hall Farm and trainer Mike Doyle will appeal the ruling set down yesterday that saw the $40,800 winners’ share of the purse taken away from because jockey Chantal Sutherland carried out one of theold whips instead of a Pro-Cush whip.
Trainers and owners were incensed around the track, bettors were left scratching their heads.

Puss ‘N’ Boots Cup tradition dates back nearly 50 years

You don’t have to be a great champion like Northern Dancer, Secretariat or Gallant Fox to have a stakes race named in your honour or to become a part of racing terminology.
Any race in which a heavy favourite is defeated becomes an “upset” to memorialize Upset, the only horse ever to defeat the great Man O’ War, in 1919. Jim Dandy upset American Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox in 1930 and now there’s a Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.
And then there’s Puss ’N’ Boots, the goofy galloper who was leading a two-year-old race on Fort Erie Race Track’s turf course in 1961 when he suddenly ducked through an opening in the inner hedge, lost his rider (Ronnie Behrens) and slid into one of the three infield lakes. His trainer, the late Frank Merrill Jr., had to get the non-swimming thoroughbred out of the water while directing rescue operations from a rowboat.
Not only is the horse memorialized by the $28,750 Puss ’N’ Boots Cup race on Labour Day Monday, but in a later tradition, the winning trainer and jockey plunge into the same infield lake after the trophy presentation. A few years ago winning trainer Gina Powell added a new wrinkle by shedding her outer clothing and making a bikini-clad splash.
This year, trainer Daryl Ezra advises racing fans to “watch (jockey) Dale Hemsley in a Speedo (swimsuit)” if his horse, Another Ascot, wins the Puss ’N’ Boots (for male runners), which is co-featured with the Labatt Cup (for fillies and mares) on Monday. Both are at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf course.
