WHO WILL START IN THE QUEEN’S PLATE?
Last minute supplements aside, the June 29 Queen’s Plate gained perhaps a few added entrants following the Woodbine Oaks and Plate Trial.
Desert Ride’s 8 to 1 upset of the Oaks over three Mark Casse trainees puts the Candy Ride (Arg) filly on the Plate list though her participation hasn’t been confirmed. It would seem a good fit, however, since her 83 Beyer Figure from the Oaks and stretch running style and fast improving form all point to her as a major contender in a very modest year for Plate horses.
PAY FOR PEACE is also improving quickly for trainer Rachel Halden and his US owners the Penney family and Lisa Mosa. The Ontario sired guy won the Plate Trial with a good rally although he went more than a second slower than Desert Ride. While his time of 1:51.63 was better than three of the 14 runnings on synthetic dirt at Woodbine, he would certainly have to add on about 15+ Beyer Figure points to win the big dance. It is possible that the 71 Beyer Figure assigned by Daily Racing Form for Pay for Peace’s Trial is a bit on the low side.
Trainer MARK CASSE, fresh off the Belmont Stakes win by his student SIR WINSTON told THOROUGHBLOG Monday morning that only Federal Law and Skywire will start in the Plate (none of his fillies who were in the Oaks).
And EURICO DA SILVA, who has ridden Avie’s Flatter, also rides SKYWIRE.

KIMURA HOT ON THE HEELS OF DA SILVA
Apprentice jockey Kazushi Kimura may be on a lot of ‘live’ horses at Woodbine but this young jock is proving he is one of the best riders on the circuit. Kimura is currently 2nd on the leading rider standings behind longtime leading rider Eurico da Silva.
Of course it is very early in the Thoroughbred season but Kimura’s patience has paid off as he seems to have a lot of horse left for the final furlong.
Eurico Rosa Da Silva 133 32 30 18 $1,444,550
Kazushi Kimura 158 28 19 26 $798,881
Luis Contreras 135 26 22 18 $1,079,703
Rafael Hernandez 142 24 24 25 $911,497
Emma-Jayne Wilson 112 16 19 13 $572,981
Luis Contreras is having a good season as is Rafael Hernandez and Emma-Jayne Wilson has really surged this year.

IT WAS A SUMMER SUNDAY!
Trainer Stuart Simon continues winning tear
files from Woodbine media
The way trainer STUART SIMON is going, he should wheel back BOLD SCRIPT back in the Queen’s Plate and give the grey filly a chance to beat the boys.
Simon has been on a roll in 2019 with his fillies.
Summer Sunday continued her Woodbine winning ways on Sunday afternoon while earning a graded stakes score in the $125,000 Hendrie for fillies and mares.
The Stuart Simon trainee has racked up five stakes wins and is now six-for-six while competing at Woodbine.
In Sunday’s 6-1/2 furlong sprint, 3-2 favourite Summer Sunday pressed the pace while racing between rivals through opening panels of :23.33 and :46.09 then came through to challenge Sly Beauty for the lead entering the final turn. She struck the front at the top of the lane and drew clear to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:16.62.
Her Beyer Figure of 93 was one on of the highest last week at Woodbine by a winner.
Katie Baby, the 7-2 second choice, staged a late rally on the far outside to finish second ahead of Alnilah. Sly Beauty edged out Silent Sonet in a photo finish for fourth while Crazy Sweet, Straitouttapopcorn and Devine Mischief completed the field.
“We got some decent pace in front, so we were able to track a horse and settle down,” said winning jockey Rafael Hernandez.
“The horse outside [Devine Mischief] put a little pressure and wanted to go early but by the three-eighths she was done so my horse settled down more and gave me a better finish.”
An eight-time starter with close to $380,000 in earnings, Summer Sunday has won all six of her Woodbine appearances on the Tapeta surface.
“It’s quite unusual and most rewarding,” said William Scott, who shares ownership of the four-year-old daughter of Silent Name with his wife Anne.
Throughout her career, she has collected stakes wins in the Nandi, Muskoka and Fury as well as last month’s Ballade Stakes. While Summer Sunday has shown consistency on Woodbine’s main track, Simon noted the Ontario-bred filly has more to offer.
“She’s just a dream horse,” said Simon. “She is better than her form does say on dirt, believe me. I really think she’d run on the grass too. She’s just that type of horse – on the lead, off the lead, probably run farther – she’s a dream horse.”
The victory capped off a successful weekend for Simon, who also watched his trainee Sister Peacock win the William D. Graham Memorial Stakes on Saturday and Bold Script finish just a neck shy of Woodbine Oaks glory.
PUT AWAY THE WHIP – OR MAKE PENALTIES BIGGER
from Louisville Courier-Journal
Though modern crops such as the 360 GT (for Gentle Touch) are more sound than fury, designed to make an impression without leaving a mark, their foam composition does not eliminate the appearance of corporal punishment to a spectator or television viewer. From a distance, it’s tough to tell whether a jockey is hitting his mount with Nerf or nunchucks.
