DOES PENDER HARBOUR FIT?
We were kind of hoping to see PENDER HARBOUR at Woodbine for the Ontario derby tomorrow, a showdown with Moonshine Mullin. Instead, the fellow is on his way to Philly Park for the Penn Derby at 9 furlongs on the dirt.
How does the race shape up?
Hmm, well TO HONOR AND SERVE is a speedy, stalking type with a couple of recent triple-digit Beyer Figures.
RATTLESNAKE BRIDGE has improving form and is a tough closer. J W BLUE ran well in the Travers.
And this corner still thinks RULER ON ICE has another big one in him.
So, it would be a surprise to this corner if Canada’s top male gets closer than 3rd at best, but that kind of outing would wrap up champion 3yo colt honours it would seem (unless some other wild things happen in the last couple of months).

DAVE COTTLE always enjoyed spending time at the race track, loved researching pedigrees, imagined one day he would get involved in horse ownership.
As the head lacrosse coach at Loyola College in his native Baltimore for 19 years and then for 9 years at the University of Maryland, he simply did not have the time. Now, as the president of the Chesapeake Bayhawks in Major League Lacrosse, he does.
Tomorrow, he will be at Parx Racing watching Rush Now run in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (NBC Philadelphia Nonstop, 5-6 p.m.). The colt won’t be the favorite, but he is a contender. And he will be in front early.
Cottle, Dan Ryan (Dan Ryan Home Builders) and Mike Porcelli, a basketball player at Loyola when Cottle was there and now a retired investment banker living in Denver, are the ownership team put together by former trainer-now-dealmaker Mark Reid.

WOODBINE THURSDAY
The DAILY DOUBLE was won by trainer Kevin Attard and jockey Jesse Campbell. Kevin McKinlay’s WELL READ was the 2 to 1 choice to win the 1st , a maiden race for $16K and he made a very wide move off the turn and got up in time.
BLIZZARD BUDDY BEN (Greatness) won the 2nd for Carmen Attard and Soli Mehta, rallying in tiime to take the $16K race for 3s and up.
The featured event went to the fast improving DANCE TO THE MOON who confirmed she is not a need-to-lead gal as she stalked and won the allowance/optional claimer for her 3rd straight win, her 4th in her last 5 starts. The Perigee Moon filly is out of the unraced Bold and Dancing, a half sister to Bold Nurse. C. Scott Abbott is the owner/breeder and Mike Doyle is the trainer. This gal ran a lifetime best 83 Beyer Figure on a lightning fast Polytrack.
The PICK 4 kicked off with a logical winner in Richard and Jo Ellen Shaw’s CALIBRATION, an Orientate miss out of Matilda Dancer by Green Dancer. The dark bay gal appeared to be settling for 2nd in the 1 1/16 mile maiden allowance but was up on the money to beat front runner Pleasant Comment. David Beller trains and Stevie Bahen rode. The winner paid $7.20.
The 5th went to front runner VALANNA from the Peter Berringer barn and she was returning to Polytrack and her previous run on that sirface was good. Yesterday she was 7 to 1 and battled on the rail all the way through hot fractions and then edged clear under Emile Ramsammy. It was a maiden $25K claiming race.
DARING DELILAH won for Gabe Grossberg in race 6 as one of the faves and she was up in time to beat Lady D’Wildcat, who appeared to be well on her way to winning. The race was a $20K claiming event for fillies and mares and the winner is by Dehere, trained by Mark Casse.
It would have been tough to have the winner of the 7th, a race that came off the grass and was decimated to just 6 entrants (3 were main track only’s). OCTAVO, a $10,000 claim from Steve Asmussen by Chris Steve at the end of last year, led all the way under NEIL HUSBANDS (1st win at Woodbine) at 20 to 1 to beat big shots like SALTY LANGFUHN and BECKY’S KITTEN (who was re-claimed by the Ramsey family).
The Claiborne Farm’s bred is by Forestry and a handsome fellow, and, wow, looks like a pretty cool claim.
The PIck 4 paid $8K.
The last race was a thriller as front runner PRIZED HUMOUR appeared to have heldon to win the $40K claiming race at 1 1/16 miles but the photo showed THOR’S PIPER the winner for Chiefswood Stable, trainer Paul Attard and Steve Bahen, who had another good day.

Woodbine Gets Social
This weekend provided some great racing, including a truly spectacular finish in the Grade I $1,000,000 Ricoh Woodbine Mile on Sunday. Turallure, under a chilly ride by Julien Leparoux, bided his time throughout the early panels of the race and, in breathtaking fashion, found his way through and around the cavalry charge in the stretch to win by a neck. I watched the race in my apartment, and in spite of not having bet on the race I was cheering so much that my cat hid under the bed. It was one of those finishes that got you on your feet whether or not you had Turallure to win.
