It’s not just in southern Ontario where the deep freeze has already set in. Parx Racing (Philly) had to cancel its card Tuesday because of sub-zero temps. That card was to mark the first day of riding for top Canadian rider Emma-Jayne Wilson.

The next Parx card is today. Wilson is scheduled to ride KIRKLAND LAKE in an allowance race for Scott Fairlie.

ROXY READIES FOR HAT

Eugene Melnyk’s undefeated 2yo filly ROXY GAP is getting close to running and she is being pointed to the JANUARY 5 OLD HAT STAKES at GULFSTREAM PARK.

The Indian Charlie gal, trained by Mark Casse, was forced to miss the Breeders’ Cup because of health issues but she has been working up a storm at Palm Meadows…

DESK CLEANING

It will be a while before I see the surface of my desk (or the floor of my office for that matter) but there are some letters and comments I should pass along:

On the main page of THOROUGHBLOG are my lists – the HOT CANADIAN-BRED RUNNERS OF THE YEAR, my current HOT MUST-READ BOOKS and I threw a list on there for the top contenders for Canada’s Horse of the Year (which will not be announced until April 1). I have updated these lists and hopefully have not left off anyone.

CLICK HERE AND SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE LISTS!;

https://canadianthoroughbred.com/?cat=53

Did you know you can Search the ‘Blog? Just type in the key word or name in the Search box and you will be taken to where you want to go.

The claiming horse WHITE BALANCE, formerly owned by the Woodbine TV department, is on the AE list at Penn National today for $5,000 claiming and I have had inquiries from people about how to get in contact with the horse’s trainer, Lawrence King. If anyone knows, please forward a message to Thoroughblog.

Thanks to folks like Alex S., Steve, Sarah, KPW and others who continually send in thoughts and comments to the ‘Blog. I welcome all viewpoints and ideas.

How shocking and disappointing is it that scribes voting for BLAME for Horse of the Year are seemingly outnumbering those for ZENYATTA. These must be the same folks who voted for Rachel Alexandra last year even though Zenyatta won the BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC.

Sad. Zenyatta was never beaten. That is hard to do no matter what horses you are racing against. Blame lost to Haynesfield.

SANTA AT FAIR GROUNDS

Central City Stars on Santa Super Saturday

Preston Stables’ Central City is the 9-5 morning line choice in Saturday’s $60,000 Bonapaw Stakes – just one of five stakes scheduled for this weekend’s Santa Super Saturday Presented by Daily Racing Form at Fair Grounds – but the long-range plans of Central City, runner-up in the Grade II Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 6, make him the star of Saturday’s pre-Christmas Crescent City show.

That’s because following the Bonapaw, and perhaps another appearance at the New Orleans oval, Central City is being penciled in for a trip to the Group 2, $1 million Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Race Course in Dubai. The $60,000 Bonapaw, at about 5 1/2-furlongs over the Stall-Wilson turf course, fit well into the son of City Place’s schedule as his connections look to keep him in top form for a few more months.

Gulfstream reaches deal with horsemen for first half of meeting only

RACEHORSE FATALITIES DECLINE A BIT

The Jockey Club today released an updated North American fatality rate for Thoroughbreds that includes two years’ worth of data in the Equine Injury Database, the North American database for racing injuries.

Based on an analysis of 754,932 starts collected during the two-year period November 1, 2008, through October 31, 2010, the prevalence of fatal injury declined to 2.00 per 1,000 starts, as compared to the 2.04 rate reported in March for the one-year period November 1, 2008, through October 31, 2009.

The analysis was performed by Dr. Tim Parkin, a veterinarian and epidemiologist from the University of Glasgow, who serves as a consultant on the Equine Injury Database.

Parkin noted that the change in the overall fatality rate stemmed from cumulative two-year data
