SATURDAY IN THE SLOP AND THE SOFT at America’s biggest tracks
While the results of the litany of Win and You’re In events likely won’t have a lot of bearing on the results of the Breeders’ Cup races come the end of this month (unless of course, Keeneland is a mud-bowl as it was yesterday), there were some impressive performances at Keeneland and Belmont.
At the same time, there were a couple of very sad moments as SHORE RUNNER, who was charing to the lead in the off-the-turf Woodford Stables at Keeneland, broke down and caused an accident. He was later put down.
Later, in the Shadwell Mile, the 7yo horse SKYRING broke down and was also put down.

KEENELAND RE-CAP

Grand Arch wouldn’t go away. Not only that, the 6-year-old gelding kept getting a little more persistent and that much better with each passing year.
In the 22 starts the bay son of Arch had made heading into Saturday’s Grade I, $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland, Grand Arch had kept knocking on the door of top level achievement only to have it slammed in his face.
A handful of strides before the wire, it looked as though another established Grade I winner was going to rob the old boy of his moment again. Instead, Grand Arch held his ground and came through with his long awaited breakout victory, holding off Arlington Million winner The Pizza Man by a head to take the Shadwell and book himself a return spot in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 31.

BELMONT RE-CAP
By Alex Orr Jr. | For NJ Advance Media
ELMONT, N.Y. — With the $23.5 million Breeders’ Cup Championships just five weeks away at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., Belmont Park’s Jockey Club Gold Cup under card offered a plethora of opportunities for owners, trainers and riders to get a ticket to the high dollar affair.
Kelso Mile
The first of the afternoon’s graded stakes shed some light on three Breeders’ Cup races — the $5 million Classic, the $1 million Dirt Mile and the $1 million Sprint. Appealing Tale, fresh from some sharp efforts at Del Mar and Santa Anita, went to the front very early in the $400,000, Grade 2 Kelso Handicap and stayed there.
With jockey Joe Talamo sitting quietly most of the way, they set fractions of 46.35 seconds for the half mile and 1 minute, 09.89 seconds for six furlongs before stopping the clock in 1 minute, 34.86 seconds for the mile on a sloppy and sealed track.
The victory prompted West Coast trainer Peter Miller to report by telephone, “”It’s on to the Breeders’ Cup next. We’ll probably cross enter in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. But, we’ll probably lean more on the Dirt Mile,” he said.
Honor Code, the winner of Saratoga’s Whitney Handicap and Belmont’s Metropolitan Handicap, was sent postward as the 3 to 5 favorite with jockey Javier Castellano. They tried to come from sixth in the field of seven but fell 3-3/4 lengths short of Appealing Tale and Red Vine, the winner of Monmouth’s Majestic Light.
Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, speaking of the Classic, said Honor Code will be “fine” for that race. Jockey Javier Castellano said Honor Code “gave me a strong finish, but I couldn’t get there.”
Flower Bowl
After a rather disappointing summer, Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s home-bred Stephanie’s Kitten captured the 38th running of the $500,000 Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes for fillies and mares—with some help from a rabbit.

*OLG PICKETERS BLOCKING TRACK ACCESS
By: Staff Torstar News Service..
A few hundred locked-out Ontario Lottery and Gaming workers picketed Woodbine Racetrack for a second day Saturday after the corporation walked away from pension plan negotiations in September, according to the union representing the workers.
Around 400 Unifor workers and supporters blocked off access to the racetrack and casino’s parking lot and entrances for about eight hours Friday, and a few hundred formed picket lines at each of the facility’s six entrances Saturday, said Bob Orr, the Unifor union assistant president responsible for the OLG file.
TTC buses are not stopping in front of Woodbine during the dispute, meaning anyone arriving by public transit must walk from the closest stop about a kilometre away
