IT’S TIME TO PLAY THE JACKPOT HIGH 5 – Woodbine’s new bet starts tonight in the 8th race, see below for some tips!
It’s the THANKSGIVING WEEKEND coming up with racing Friday through Monday.
The NEARCTIC STAKES on Saturday is a WIN AND YOU’RE IN EVENT at Woodbine..not sure what kind of field it will get but let’s hope there is a decent size field since our big events have not had many horses in them…the CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL nominations close tonight, it is the 76th running of the race and it takes place the weekend before the Breeders Cup, on Oct. 27.
The contenders for the International include FORTE DEI MARMI, LUCAYAN, PERFECT TIMBER and the filly TANNERY.
**Below is the John Henry Turf at Santa Anita – Lucayan was 3rd in the Sept. 29 race:
SUNDAY AT WOODBINE
The story of the weekend came down to the two graded 3 stakes races on Sunday which were both won by trainer Jose Carroll. Also, Patrick Husbands is at the top of his game again, he won 4 races on Sunday.
The Grey, for 2yos, had 4 horses in it (Matador is a Canadian-bred who is going in a Canadian-bred race so he was scratched) so that was a disappointing event. The winner, AMI’S HOLIDAY is another good, young homebred for Ivan Dalos’ Tall Oaks Farm. Dalos, who foals mares in Canada and Ontario, had this colt born in Ontario and he had justw onhis maiden on Sept 1. The son of Harlan’s Holiday – Victorious Ami by Victory Gallop (also bred by Dalos) rallied from off a steady pace set by longshot Big Bazinga and then rallied to win in 1:44.80, good for an 80 Beyer Figure.
The Coronation Futurity is the next likely spot for Ami’s Holiday, who was ridden by luis Contreras. GO GREELEY, the top 2yo colt before the race, could not manage the 1 1/16 mile distance and was 3rd while GIVE NO QUARTER, an overbet shipper, was eased but came out of the race fine according to trainer Graham Motion.
The DURHAM CUP had only 6 horses in it and 1 to 5 shot DELEGATION reportedly bled badly and he finished last. The winner was Eugene Melnyk’s JAMES STREET, who was winning for the first time this year (and he was getting his favourite rider Husbands back). He posted a 96 Beyer for 9 furlongs in 1:50.15. The son of El Prado is 7 for 27 in his career with earnings of over $615,000.
YEP, HE LOST
WISE DAN..yep, he suffered his first loss in 10 races on Saturday. The Shadwell Mile suddenly came off the grass at Keeneland and was run on a very icky and water logged Polytrack. He chased Silver Max and could not catch him. It was tough to see the Horse of the Year lose but hopefully he will get back on tack at the Breeders’ Cup next month.
As for Breeders’ Cup news, it should be fun for fans of Canadian horse racing to see the owners and horses who are expected to compete in the 2 day extravaganza.
There will be some horses ‘from’ Woodbine, like MY CONQUESTADORY, trained by Mark Casse, Canadian-breds like MARKETING MIX, JUDY THE BEAUTY, WEE MISS ARTIE and PRIVATE ZONE.
GET READY FOR THE JACKPOT high 5 BET!
We will take a look at some general pointers on this bet. It surely is difficult to pick the top 5 finishers in order, like the SUPERFECTA except with another horse.
To box 5 horses for $1 dollar cost $120, so for 20 cents, the cost to box 5 horses is $24.00.
Another way to play is to take a stand and put one horse on top, in the 1st place position and then a a few in the 2nd – 5th spots. Say if you keyed one horse on top and used 5 others in all 2nd-5th place positions – the 20 cent cost would be $24.00.
And of course, you can get creative with tickets like this:
1 – two horses
2 – two horses
3 – three horses
4 – three horses
5 – 6 horses

There are affordable approaches.
The first Jackpot High 5 is the last race tonight at Woodbine and it’s a doozy – a maiden race for $10,000 claimers.
It is almost impossible to throw out more than 2 from the 11 horse field.
If no one has a winning ticket, much of the pool carries over so that should be fun to watch.
Here is THOROUGHBLOG’S attempt at a Jackpot High 5 ticket:
1st – Shannon’s Posse (#8)
2nd – Molinaro Partenza (3), Sunset Command (9) Sorokolitis (10)
3rd – 3 9 10 (same)
4th – 3 9 10 plus Moon Over L.A. (1), Midnight Black (2), Tapdanceallday (5) Ride Me High (11)
5th – 1 2 3 5 9 10 11
Cost for 20 cents is $24.00

TREMENDOUS TREVE
Her rivals called a truce. TREVE dragged her rider to the lead with one furlong left of the legendary Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday at Longchamp and powered to a clear win in the 1 1/2 mile classic. She remains unbeaten and she will race next year.
RACING POST REPORT – Treve’s final 600 metres in :34.74
BY SAM WALKER
TREVE’S Arc win was outstanding no matter how you look at it. As Arc winners go she was superb, as fillies go she was exceptional and as 2013 goes she is now right at the top of the pile.
The French filly’s scintillating speed in the straight propelled her to an impressive five-length victory in Europe’s premier race and she now takes high rank in a number of historical contexts.
Perhaps most importantly an RPR of 130 ranks her as the best middle-distance filly or mare in RPR history, surpassing 2008 Arc winner Zarkava (129).
Black Caviar (133) still tops the all-time distaff list but Treve sits up in the top five just 1lb behind the best European female, Goldikova (131).
