FRIDAY FUN at Woodbine
Remember how this corner always refers to Fridays as freaky fridays? It is just the combination of lesser levels of races, weather, bettors, who knows. But the longshots come out and they rarely make sense.
Now, it was June 13, a Friday, with a Full Moon, so perhaps somebody used that as a reason to bet AWESOME ECLIPSE in the prep for the Highlander Stakes, race 3, which came off the grass. The 6 furlong Polytack race had in its field: Jacques Cartier Stakes winner Dan the Tin Man, red-hot Run to the Bank with 95 and 92 Beyer Figures, stakes winning speedster Black Hornet and SW Paso Doble, to name a few.
But it was wide, rallying AWESOME ECLIPSE, a turf specislist, layoff specialist but Polytrack winner, who upset the apple cart at 40 to 1 under Sheena Ryan. It was the 7-year-olds 2nd race of the season (he was 2nd on the grass to Lockout in his opener) and just his 15th career race. NO, he does not race much, but he sure makes it count. Gail Proteau is the owner and Ravendra Raghunath picked up the bulk of ther $74,000 purse. The fast pace and final time (109.23 worked out to an 86 Beyer Figure.
Yes, that is a new top for the 7-year-old.
More Friday….
Race 1 – Plunging maiden CAJUN KISS led all the way and won by more than 10 lengths for Tucci Stables and trainer Nick Gonzalez. The chestnut by Old Fashioned was racing without blinkers and had Jesse Campbell up for the win for $12,500. He was claimed by Alex Patykewish. Also claimed was 6th place finisher Miss You Lester by Trinity Racing.
Race 2- Race began with Takemebaktoartemus losing rider Nick Webb and then tough speedster GUITAR SOLO streaking along to the lead and hanging on to win off the claim by Ace Racing Stable and trainer Scott Fairlie. The hard trying guy had won his season opener for $8,000 and he is now 2 for 2. His Beyer from Friday’s race was 75 for 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.69. Michelle Rainford rode.
race 4- It was odd to see so many horses on the card of racing being virtually eased up in the late stages, as if the conditions were too taxing or there are just horses being entered that probably should not me.
This race was won by NORTHERN BLUEBIRD, now 2 for 3 this year for Bill Sorokolit and trained Darwin Banach. The Northern Afleet gelding won the $11,500 claiming race from off the quick pace set by Macallan while the last three runners, two of them well bet, were beaten 24, 27 and 38 lengths. Luis Contreras rode the winner who is 4 for 11 in his career.
Race 5- a maiden race that came off the turf and was run at 11/16 miles on the Polytrack. It was Queen’s Plate eligible EAST SIDE edging out srtablemate Countryman (both from Mark Casse barn) to win the Polytrack race in 1:45.65 – a 65 Beyer Figure. It was the 3rd start for the son of English Channel out of Russian Sweetiepie by Absent Russian. Justin Stein rode for Stoneway Farm.
Race 6 – WHAT NEXT, at 1 to 1, won this $8,000 claiming race on the lead the entire 7 furlongs. Debmar Stables owns the sophomore by Yes It’s True and Ricky Griffith trains. Patrick Husbands rode.
Race 7 – GEORGE BIGLIARDI’S homebred PLENTY OF HONOUR was well prepared off the long layoff by Sid Attard and team to win this off-the-turf $40,000 claiming race at 7 furlongs. The daughter of Thewayouare had ended 2013 with a maiden win and a 49 Beyer Figure but she got the jump on the faves and held off Pentathlon and Jam Jar legacy for the win. Her beyer was 68.
Race 8 – maidens going just 5 furlongs for $50,000 claiming and it was IT IS BACK, making her 2nd career start and first since Dec. 15 for Mr T Stables, which bred the Put It back filly. She rallied and caught up to a faltering pace to win in 58.40. Mike Silvera trains and Shee Ryan was the winning rider.
Race 9 – Third start off the layoff for GRABTHEMONEYANDRUN who won this $8,000 claiming race for Lawrence Cordes and trainer Tino Attard. The 4-year-old is 2 for 14 in his career and Chantal Sutherland rode.

Trainer Reade Baker won his 999th race when MACHO WHISKEY won nicely in race 2 for $20,000. He posted a 76 Beyer Figure for 7 furlongs in 1:24.15 and was claimed by Breeda Hayes.
