STRANGE DAYS INDEED
A rash of horse and people injuries at Woodbine has added to the strangeness of the season – complete with longshot winners who make little sense and big favourites not getting it done.
On the horse front, BIOFUEL was retired yesterday after she came out of the Ontario Matron with a chip in her ankle. Interestingly, STORMY ILLUSION was vanned off from the Matron with an injury that has reportedly led to her retirement.
WEEKEND ROMANCE suffered heat stroke and muscle cramping after her Passing Mood win on Saturday and is on a break too (Daily Racing Form report). And last week, top Canadian bred POOL PLAY was injured. Still have INGLORIOUS to look forward too!
BIOFUEL was one of 2 big faves on Sunday to lose graded stakes races.
FIFTY PROOF, the “large and imposing” gelding, was heavily bet for the NIJINSKY STAKES but under new rider Luis Contreras, could not lead all the way to win against a very tough bunch.
IN fact it was WINDWARD ISLANDS, a $70,000 purchase by Sam-Son Farms years ago at auction, who won the race as JAKE’S TAKE, the pick of the day on Thorougblog. He paid $9,70.
It was a 4- win day on Sunday for EMMA-JAYNE WILSON, who rode Windward Islands. The Sam-Son gal MAGIC BROOMSTICK won the Victorianna prep in the very next race.
Other notes – PAUL ATTARD is reportedly the latest trainer for Stronach Stables… JONO JONES is taking a hiatus from riding according to DAILY RACING FORM….
Josham Farms bred EMBUR’S SONG, owned by Padua Stable, won the Ontario Matron for her 2nd stakes score at Woodbine this season.

Sato, a palomino and white sabino Thoroughbred stallion, is the latest horse to be immortalized as a Breyer model. Sato is dual registered with the Jockey Club and American Paint Horse Association. He is owned by April Wayenberg of Blazing Colours Farm in Wellandport, Ontario, Canada.
Sato and owner April Wayenberg recently returned from an expense-paid trip to the Kentucky Horse Park where they were guest performers at Breyerfest. Breyerfest is one the largest model horse shows in the country and people attend from every corner of North America with some from as far away as the United Kingdom and Australia. Sato and April stepped into the main ring once a day for everyone to see this magnificent horse in the flesh.
They were also available for one hour a day where fans could get their models signed and pose for a picture with the star himself. Sato was a huge hit at Breyerfest and was the only model horse to completely sell out at the show! The event was 3 days long and his model sold out on day one before noon. Wayenberg said, “It was an amazing experience and we were treated like Royalty”. She went onto say, “Sato was a star and adored all the attention. He acted like the King he is posing for pictures with hundreds of people. He enjoyed every minute of it”.
Sato was chosen to be a Breyer model because of his extremely rare colour genetics in the Thoroughbred breed and overwhelming beauty! He was the first palomino and white Paint Thoroughbred foaled in the world. Palomino and white Paint Thoroughbreds that are coloured just like Sato are still extremely rare with perhaps 5 in the world now. Compared to the nearly 2.5 million Thoroughbreds that have been registered since 1873, when the first volume of The American Stud book was published, Sato’s rarity becomes apparent.

SUTHERLAND SAGA’S ON GOING
Okay, this is getting to be too much now…time to be quiet?
Jockey Chantal Sutherland said Saturday morning at the Del Mar Racetrack that a security guard saved her from harm when an upset race fan ran at her following the controversial finish to the Santa Anita Handicap back in March.
Sutherland won the Big Cap with Game On Dude after her horse and Twirling Candy bumped in mid-stretch. Twirling Candy finished fifth, but was the favorite in the race. Fans yelled and booed lustily afterward, yelling things like, “You’re all a bunch of crooks,” as the Game On Dude connections, led by trainer Bob Baffert, left the winner’s circle. The stewards took 10 minutes to decide the winner and voted 2-1 not to disqualify Game On Dude.
“When I came back, I knew there was going to be an inquiry, and I just hoped and prayed that we wouldn’t be taken down,” Sutherland told a crowd over more than 1,000 patrons who showed up at 8 a.m. for the Donuts At Del Mar program. “When I went back to the jockey’s room, I had five security guards with me and a guy was very upset and he came running at me. One of security guards took him out. I was like, whoa, it was such an emotional race for everybody. I loved that people were arguing about who should have won. On the Internet people were saying all kinds of things, some good, some bad. It was wild. But it was great to see so many people so passionate about the game. I was blown away.”
