RED CADEAUX, in his 5th Melbourne Cup at age 10, injured, surgery, stable
Perennial Melbourne Cup runner Red Cadeaux has been cleared of a life-threatening injury, after undergoing surgery on a fetlock injury.
He is set to undergo another procedure on a fractured fetlock on Wednesday, with his condition reported to be stable – and his racing career is officially over after 53 starts.
“RV can confirm that diagnostics undertaken on Red Cadeaux at the University of Melbourne Equine Centre at Werribee this afternoon show the horse has sustained a fracture to his medial sesamoid in his left fore fetlock,” a statement from Racing Victoria’s Veterinary Services read.
“The horse is comfortable with his leg in a splint and the fracture is stable.
“Dr Chris Whitton from the University of Melbourne advised that the injury is not currently life threatening, however the horse will not race again.”

HARD NOT TO LIKE went through her 2nd sale in the last 2 years on Monday, selling for $2.2 million to DATT Inc. The grey, Grade 1 winning mare may race once more before being bred in 2016.
SPRING IN THE AIR, also a graded SW from Ontario, was sold for $1,650,000 to Nawar Stud. The champion in in foal to War Front.
Jeff Begg’s Windways Farm, fresh off a Breeders’ Cup win with Catch a Glimpse, bought 2 Kentucky bred weanlings – a Paynter filly out of Ontario stakes winner Dancing Raven by Tomahawk for $95,000 and a Jimmy Creed filly for $55,000
JOHN ROSS sold his ace stakes winning filly BROOKLYNSWAY on Sunday day at the fancy NOVEMBER sale. The Giant Gizmo gal went for $180,000 to Dr Naveed Chowran who has a farm in Indiana.

Horses and horsepeople getting their first win of the year, top runners getting more big wins and some very curious goings-on just to make the fans, bettors ponder the pulling of hair.
Sunday –
CAREN, in any other year, would be champion 2yo filly and a candidate for Horse of the Year but this gal, while she misses out on those awards, is a remarkable filly for owner Robert Marzilli and trainer Mike DePaulo. The Society’s Chairman – Jo Zak by Vilzak gal led all the way and won the prestigious Princess Elizabeth over 4 rivals, running to her route breeding in her first try at 1 1.16 miles on Polytrack.
The filly was bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse in St. Thomas, ON and was a $45,000 yearling purchase. Marzilli recently purchased an Ontario-bred Pioneerofthe Nile colt out of the Ascot Knight mare Quite a Knightmare for $145,000 at the Fasig Tipton October sale.
Caren’s time of 1:44.56 was good for a 79 Beyer Speed Figure. Jesse Campbell rides the bay filly.
York Tech Racing had its first winner of the season when ONE FOR JACK won his first race in several years in a $20,000 claiming event. The 6yo gelding was ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson and is a son of Mutakkdim.
Wilson also rode UNDERCOVER CAT to an allowance win at 13-1 for Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman. It was the 39th win of the year for trainer Kevin Attard, who is currently 2nd in the trainer’s standings in a tight race (see standings on the post for Woodbine’s Wednesday selections). The gelding put up an 86 Beyer Figure.
Attard won again when ATHENIAN GUARD won an allowance race/optional claiming event off the claim for Mad River Farm. The 4yo gelding was ridden by Luis Contreras.
Race 9 was controversial as ULTIMATE DESTINY won the allowance/optional claiming race for $62,500. It was his first race in a couple of seasons and he was offered for the claiming tag, the first time he has been up for a tag. The gelding’s effort was gritty as he won a head bob over Marten Lake but the confusion came early as the gelding’s gate opened before the others.
The rules regarding this event are a bit vague although in order to have some consistency, it seems as if it should be that if any horse’s gate opens early, late, or not at all, the horse should be automatically be refunded and race for purse money only, or something along those lines.
Instead, there was no inquiry and the race was made official and those who had bets on Marten Lake were left scratching their heads.
ULTIMATE DESTINY posted an 89 Beyer Figure for his win for Alec Fehr.
Saturday
FLIPCUP upset the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes at 1 1/4 miles, beating ACADEMIC, the year’s best 3yo filly, with a last minute rush to the lead under Luis Contreras. This result was hard to figure since the Ontario-sired gal by Milwaukee Brew had just come off an all-out in the restricted Classy ‘n Smart Stakes, and had a series of Beyer Figures that rarely got higher than 78. Still, the filly is a polytrack ace and she proved it again, posting a huge 92 Beyer Figure for her win.
The big Beyer Figure of the weekend at Woodbine was 93, earned by GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME in the prep for the Kennedy Road, race 9. This 3yo by Old Forester had been in Ontario sired stakes races in every race but 2 in his 10 race career and he won one, the Bull Page as a 2yo. This guy has got really good since late summer, however. After he was 11th and last in the Shpperston, he has won 3 straight races, his latest win was in the Overskate Stakes. He beat Pason Doble in this dash.
SHE’S A RINGER, a homebred for Mike and Nick Nosowenko, won for the 2nd time this year in an Ontario sired allowance race. The Where’s the Ring – Executive Affair, Bold Executive filly is 10-2-4-2 this year, her first year of racing.
This is the time of year to look for promising Canadian-bred 2yo winners, pick your favourite for next year’s Queen’s Plate. ROCKETFELLER is in the picture for Josham Farms as this flashy chestnut gelding won his 3rd career start when moving out to 1 1/16 miles. The son of Old Forester is out of Murani by Distorred Humor and is a half brother to graded SW Dynamic Sky. Mike Mattine trains and Alan Garcia rode.
The Conquest 2yos are cleaning up in maiden races too and one of them won at 7-1 on Saturday. CONQUEST BABAYAGA, who had many good workouts in company and is by the red-hot Uncle Mo, won in impressive fashion in race 5 at 7 furlongs. She was a $425,000 2yo purchase by Mark Casse.
Mike Silvera won his first race of the year when ORBIT EXPRESS got up to win the $7,500 claiming event in the finale. The 6yo by Bold Executive was coming off a 12th place finisher in the same race but in that event, he was clear on the lead early in the race and stopped whereas he has never run like that before.
NBC RATINGS UP for CUP
NBC’s broadcast of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which American Pharoah came out on top in his final race, from 5 p.m. ET to 6:15 earned a 2.63/6 overnight rating, a 46% increase from the 2014 telecast and the highest since 2010, according to tweets by NBC Sports PR.
Last year’s Classic overnight, won by Bayern over Toast of New York and California Chrome, was 1.80/3. The 2010 Classic broadcast featured the career finale of Zenyatta, who came up short to Blame in the final strides.
