MY CONQUESTADORY gets post 14 for Juv. Fillies
One-time Woodbine based filly MY CONQUESTDORY, winner of the Summer Stakes at Woodbine first time out and trained by Woodbine’s leading trainer Mark Casse, got stuck with the cumbersome 14 post for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday.
The 2yo filly, owned by Conquest Stables, is 2 for 2 in her career after a stunning win in the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes, and is one of a bunch of canadian-based. owned or bred runners in the 2-day extravangza on Friday and Saturday.
The reactions from Casse varied depending on was interviewing him – he said he may not even run the filly in a report by Jennie Rees:
Among the favorites getting the worst draws was Keeneland’s Darley Alcibiades winner My Conquestadory starting from post 14 in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, with the short run to the turn in the mile race. My Conquestadory is 2 for 2, beating boys in a Grade II turf stakes in her debut, followed by the Alcibiades on Polytrack.
Trainer Mark Casse, groaning at the post, said they might not even run Conquestadory, who is the 9-2 second choice behind France’s Vorda (4-1).
“I haven’t been feeling well, and I can’t tell you that made my stomach feel any better,” Casse said. “…. We may not even run, but we’ll see. It’s such a huge disadvantage. But she’s overcome some disadvantages in her races before.” – Mark Casse, trainer
Daily Racing Form reports that Casse was “unfazed.”
No matter what the emotions, it’s a tough place in the gate for the filly but she sure overcame a lot to win the Alcibiades.
My Conquestadory is one of 3 mounts for popular Woodbine rider EURICO DA SILVA: he is also on POOL PLAY in the marathon and CONQUEST TITAN in the Juvenile.

ONE, TWO THREE…IT’S JOSHUA TREE!!
Sometimes it is just hard to put into words a performance by a racehorse on any given day.
What about a racehorse who travels thousands of miles by plan, 4 years in succession, wins 3 of them for 3 sets of owners, trainers and jockeys?
JOSHUA TREE will go down as one of the most remarkable horses to race at Woodbine in the modern day, becoming the first to win 3 editions of the tough CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL – GRADE1 , a 1 1/2 mile turf event.
The feisty bay simply loves his trips to Canada as $3 million of his 43,8 million in earnings has come from here.
He moved early in this year’s renewal, darted clear and then held off a charging HYPER to win at a fat 6 to 1 in 2:35.45. That was his slowest time for the race but the grass course, listed as yielding, was certainly more on the soft side.
Interesting that the 6yo horse is out of MADEIRA MIST, who snuck into Woodbine a few years ago and won the Dance Smartly Stakes.
JOSHUA TREE’S victory may be his next to last race of his career as he is expected to go to stud next spring at the owner’s new farm in France.
The E.P. TAYLOR was won the the favorite TANNERY who needed some serious grit in the last stages to out-battle Darly Stud’s FITFUL SKIES and win by a head. It’s a good thing that this Dylan Thomas mare has a very large head!
It was not a great pair of races for Canadians are both FORTE DEI MARMI and PERFECT TIMBER were outrun while the four gals in the Taylor were 6th or worse.
The loss by Forte dei Marmi will hurt his chances a bit to be Canadian Horse of the Year, despite the three graded stakes wins this year on turf. The good news is, there is not a ton of competition for the honour except from COMMANDER, a winner for 4 stakes this year in western Canad and a starter in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon.
WOODBINE WEEKEND WRAP
INTERNATIONAL DAY, great feel to the crowd even though everyone had to be inside, it’s was very cold. Everyone dressed up in the scraves that were given away and if you took a tour of the floors, well, it was fun to see all the people.
Betting was off a bit, down to $5.9 million from $6.4 but the event was moved 2 weeks later, everyone is concentrating on Breeders’ Cup and there were 2 less stakes races.
It was especially good to see a lot of people at the races who were not racing a horse – owners and trainers who just came to watch the races, bet a few bob.
Some Sunday results:
Race 1- BATTLE FOR GOLD was coming off a July layoff and was very easy to like in the maiden allowance. The son of Bold n Flashy won big too, by more than 6 lengths for Kingfields Racing and A Fuller. catherine Day Phillips trains the 3yo who was bred by John Carey.
Race 2 blew the doors open foer bettors early on. Some $47,000 was bet to show on 2 to 5 favourite SPANISH FLOWER in the maiden allowance at 1 1.16 miles by the filly did not hit the oard and the show prices were large.
Winning the race at almost 8 to 1 was COASTAL DAWN, a regally bred Giant’s Causeway filly out of Queen’s Plate winner Dancethruthedawn. It was her 2nd starta of her career.
Race 4 – More troubles with the starting gate – yet another horse broke through shades before the race started and caused a lot of grief for those who liked the horse at 60 to 1.
Yep, Osculator’s gate opened early and then he ran 4th at 60 to 1 in a huge effort but it you had him in the superfecta – well, he was decalred a non-starter. Meanwhile, in other instances, the horse is kept as a starter.
There is no consistency in the rulings on these gate mishaps and that is a problem.
The winner of the race, a non-winners of 1’other than’ that came off grass was HURRY UP ALAN, who led all the way for his 2nd straight win for Lawrence Cordes and trainer Tino Attard.
Red hot Ralph Biamonte is one of the latest trainers for Beclawat Stable and they won the 6th race with GIA SCALA, a Seeking the Best filly bred by Kingstead Farms (Amanda Motz and Jamie Begg) . The winner is out of Gotta Go Jo Jo by Polish Navy and it was her 2nd career race.
Race 9 MELONG DELTA, freshened almost 2 months by Mike Mattine for owner/breeder Ted Burnett, won the allowance race for non-winners of 2 ‘other than’ and it was her 2nd score in 5 races. Gerry Olguin rode the Stormy Atlantic gal.
Race 11 – the High 5 Jackpot was almost $100,000 but it was not won again despite some $36,000 be bet into it. The winner was DOUBLE DOUBLE fore Horace Thomas and Mjic J Stable. Conrad belaire trains the 5yo who was making only th3 4th start of the year in the $10K claiming race and it was his 2nd win.
SATURDAY WRAP
RACE 2 was a maiden allowance for ONtario sired gals and it was a dead heat – X SQUARED move on the turn to take the lead and then LADY DO GOOD rallied o nthe otuside. The former is a Frank DiGiulio 3yo filly by Bold Executive out of Press Exclusive and the latter is a Philanthropist filly owned by Overheath Stable.
Race was won by the very good LUKES ALLEY, a 3yo Flower Alley colt who is 3 for 5 in his career. He had a weird trip to Chicago when in an impossible spot on very soft turf in the hawthorne Derby but he has won his last 3 Woodbine races. He took this allowance race over older horses and he is owned by Eugene Melnyk.
RACE 4 was won by Cheifswood Stables’ debuting 2yo LATIN PIPER, by Niigon out of Lone Piper. This colt was hammered down to 8 to 5 and he won by a neck over 35 to 1 shot Best Country (best of the Bests (Ire). Rachel Halden prepared the 2yo for that smart debut win.
The 6th was the Fanfreluche Stakes for Ontario bred 2yo fillies and favoured Regal Conqueror was scratched. The favourite wound up being LAPSANG, who just won the Deputy Jane West Stakes for Silver Duck Racing and partners.
But the 6 furlong dash was a weird one as maiden EXECUTIVE ALLURE was sent hard to the lead with her blinkers on (she was 23 to favourite 1st time out but finished 7th) and despite swishing her tail and racing all over the track and, well, looking just awful, she won over a fast closing Splashy Gizmo.
The winner is a Bill Sorokolit homebred (stablemate of Regal Conqueror) and b y Bold Executive out of Ready and Alluring by More than Ready.
The War front filly NATIVE BOMBSHELL edged local gal Cabo Queen in the Ruling Angel Stakes, an open race at 6 1/2 furlongs. The winner was ridden by patrick Husbands for trainer Chad Brown. She is 3 for 5 in her career.
