IMPERIAL MONARCH COMING TO WOODBINE
The Aidan o’Brien trainee IMPERIAL MONARCH has been taken out of consideration for the Prix de ‘lArc de Triomphe this Sunday and will likely head to Woodbine for the Oct. 14 Canadian International.
The Tabor, Smith Magnier colt by Gallileo – Ionain Sea won the Prix de Jockey Club in France in his last race and was a troubled 8th in the French Derby before that.
This guy is 3 for 4 in his career and is a handsome bay with a white blaze. HIs dam, by Slip Anchor, has produced The Great Gatsby, who was 3rd in the Epsom Derby.
The addition of IMPERIAL MONARCH would be super for the International. Previous International winner Joshua Tree was considered the horse to beat before today.

Stormy Lord would try and carry his speed 12 furlongs if he competes. His dam Lady Auchamore is entered in the upcoming Keeneland November sale.

GOOD BETTING NEWS FOR LOCALS
Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) announced that fractional betting on U.S. racing, something that WEG has been pursuing for an extended time, will be available on the Keeneland races for the start of their meet in Lexington, Kentucky, this Friday, October 5.
Fractional betting, which allows bettors to play the races in pre-determined fractional amounts, has been available for Canadian horseplayers on Woodbine and Mohawk racing for years with great success. As well, recent technological advancements and regulatory approvals have allowed American horseplayers to bet at these same minimums into WEG pools. The innovation is expected to be expanded to other U.S. host tracks in the near future.
Local racing fans will now be able to bet, as a base, 20 cents on Superfectas, which asks for the first four finishers in a race and 60 cents on Triactors and multi-race bets like the Pick-3 and Pick-4, which asks for the winners of three and four consecutive races, respectively.
“The concept is seen as critical to our core customers, so we’re glad to be able announce this exciting news,” said Sean Pinsonneault, WEG’s Chief Operating Officer. “The U.S. host tracks are beginning to transition their tote systems to accommodate fractional betting for the Canadian player. Keeneland will lead the rollout this Friday, while other tracks are expected to follow soon.”
The base amounts are more in tune with the offerings in the United States , but are still limited by current Canadian regulations and must be in 20 cent increments.
“This rollout will be gradual as it requires host approvals and depends on the capabilities of their respective tote system,” said Pinsonneault. “Woodbine Entertainment Group is actively pursuing other tracks to participate in this program and is eager to add more to the list.”
It is unlikely that this feature will be available on California tracks in 2012, but other key racing meets are expected to adopt this before the end of the year.
The first opportunity for horseplayers to take advantage of U.S. fractional betting is Friday’s first race at Keeneland, set for 1pm.
WISE DAN TO BE ENTERED IN SHADWELL TURF MILE
Trainer Charlies Lopresti said Tuesday morning that Morton Fink’s homebred Wise Dan would be entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 27th running of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).
“We are going to enter him and see what happens,” Lopresti said of the 5-year-old Wiseman’s Ferry gelding, who has earned more than $2 million. “We are going to take it day to day and right now he is doing good. Weather will not be a factor (in running). Jose Lezcano will have the mount.”
Winner of the Ben Ali (G3) in main track record time in his most recent race at Keeneland, Wise Dan comes into the Shadwell Turf Mile off a 3¼-length victory in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) on September 16. The victory at Woodbine earned Wise Dan a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on November 3 at Santa Anita.
The Shadwell Turf Mile, won by champion Gio Ponti last year with Wise Dan finishing fourth, is also a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Adena brings in sire while others flee
Silent Name (Jpn) (Sunday Silence–Danzigaway, by Danehill) will return to Frank Stronach=s Adena Springs Canada for the 2013 season, it was announced Tuesday. The 10-year-old stood the past two seasons at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in New York.
He began his stud career at Adena Kentucky in 2008.
Silent Name, winner of the 2006 GII Arcadia H. and 2007 GII Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup S., is the sire of last Saturday’s Victorian Queen S. heroine Crysta’s Court.
No fee has been announced yet.
The move is different than that of a lot of stallion owners in Ontario who are uneasy about how many people will still have mares to breed to local studs. A number of stallions have already left the province including GAYEGO and PHILANTHROPIST.

The easiest way to see how the Ontario racing industry is already collapsing at its outer edges is to consider the way life is changing for Dr. David Grant.
Last breeding season, before the McGuinty government announced the end of a $345-million-a-year Slots at Racetrack Program (SARP), the travelling Norfolk County veterinarian helped clients breed 60 local mares.
This year, it was six mares, a 90-per-cent drop. That’s 54 foals from a handful of farms in just one region that never will be born.

Maryland surges while Ontario teeters…

Thoroughbred racing in Maryland has deteriorated so badly over so many years that most bettors pay little or no attention to it. Even players who live in the vicinity of Laurel Park or Pimlico are apt to prefer wagering on out-of-state tracks; the local product may not be on their radar screens.
Since Laurel began its fall season on Sept. 5, people who do watch its races have surely noticed a significant development: The product has improved substantially. The fields have generally been large and competitive, with an average of nine horses per race, a sharp increase over last year. They aren’t filled with rock-bottom types who are at Laurel because they can’t win at Charles Town. Good stables are shipping horses into Maryland for selected races.
The reason for the change is the long-awaited infusion of revenue from slot machines into purse money. Since the Maryland Live! Casino has gone into full-scale action, with its 4,750 slots at Arundel Mills, purses at Laurel have shot up from $185,000 per day last year to $245,000 at the current meeting. As more casinos operate in the state — one in Baltimore is scheduled to open in 2014 — the purses will be even more robust.
