KARIBU GARDENS bucks the odds, wins Sky Classic – Grade 2, CONTRERAS wins 5

 

Four-year-old KARIBU GARDENS, one of a handful of horses than Eugene Melnyk kept to race following his dispersal, has burst onto the graded stakes scene after just 8 races. This Flower Alley – Flower Forest, Kris S colt was an impressive winner on dirt at Fair Grounds in the winter but he missed time from Jan. to June. He was 2nd to Aldous Snow in a course-record setting 1 1/16 mile turf race on June in his comeback but then pulled up at 4 to 5 in a Polytrack race on Canada day.

Heat stroke had been rumoured as the reason but following this colt’s impressive Sky Classic win, his 2nd straight score since he was vanned off, trainer Josie Carroll said jockey LUIS CONTRERAS thought he had taken a bad step.

He posted a 94 Beyer Figure for his Sky Classic win over REPORTING STAR and Money Talker. DYNAMIC SKY, ALDOUS SNOW and old timer FORTE DEI MARMI were all well beaten.

KARIBU GARDENS is out of stakes winner Flower Forest ($107,000) who has had 5 winners from 5 foals including the good turf winner Silver Rock. The mare was sold in Jan. 2013 for $67,000 to Sienna Famrs in foal to Flower Alley. Her 2yo by Flower Alley,  Bullards Alley, was bought for $11,000 this spring by Wayne Spalding.

IMPERIAL DREAM battled unbeaten SEFFEARA and took off to win the Vandal Stakes with an 83 Beyer Figure (1:09.58) Tucci Stables bought this colt for $70,000 at the OBS March sale and he won easily as expected first time out. The Stormy Atlantic – Nicki Knew, by Tethra colt was 1st time with Lasix. Nick Gonzalez trains and Stan Dodson’s Hopefield Farms bred the colt. Patrick Husbands rode.

UP WITH THE BIRDS lands 4th in Arlington Million

winner Hardest Core almost died not long ago…

Canadian Horse of the Year UP WITH THE BIRDS was an even 4th in the 7-horse Arlington Million (Grade 1) yesterday in Chicago. Sam-Son Farms’ star colt by Stormy Atlantic could not rally with the likes of upset winner Hardest Core or Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Magician and he did not have a lot of pace to run at.

After everything Hardest Core has been through, winning the ­Arlington Million as an 11-1 long shot on Saturday isn’t the biggest upset the gelding has pulled off.

The horse was bought in November at the Keeneland Sales for $210,000 and was sent to be castrated. Following the procedure, Hardest Core was sent out into the field. A day later he was found lying on the ground and with his intestines coming out after having a problem with the surgery.

Trainer Edward Graham was able to get the horse into a trailer and eventually got him treatment. In another procedure, he lost 18 feet of intestine.

 

EDISON shines bright in Canadian Derby

EDMONTON – Who said lightning never strikes twice in the same place?

Just as Broadway Empire did a year ago, stablemate Edison romped home the easiest of winners in Saturday’s $200,000 Canadian Derby — the richest race west of Ontario.

Same owners.

Same trainer.

Same jockey.

Same outcome.

Same everything.

“It’s crazy,” said Edison and Broadway Empire’s trainer Robertino Diodoro. “When I was watching the race all I could see was Broadway Empire.

“It was like watching a replay of last year’s Derby.

“Edison sat in the same position as Broadway Empire did. He took the lead at the same time as Broadway Empire. And he won like Broadway Empire.

 

FRIDAY AT WOODBINE

Race 1- a maiden claiming race for 2-year-olds and the filly DEL CIELO led most of the way but could not hold off a sharp beginner named SERIOUS TALK, owned by the Natural Eight Stable, This Forestry gelding, bred in Kentucky, was a $10,000 yearling purchase and he is trained by Bill Tharrenos

race 2- GRANDMA’S HOUSE led a 1-2 finish for Mark Casse in a maiden claiming race and the winner was taking a big class drop.
Race 3- GOLDEN ABBEY had a little freshening since May and she came back with a win for $7,500 under Juan Crawford. S A Racing owns this Where’s the Ring 5yo mare who is 2 for 5 this year and 3 for 15 in her career. Ross Armata trains.

Race 4- So tough was the entry from Ralph Biamonte, Mary Biamonte and Danny Lococo that they almost dead-heated. Stakes winner JENNA’S WABBIT won his 2nd straight race by inches over CITIUS, also a stakes winner. The Wabbit raced just once in 2013 following good seasons in 2011 and 2012. He has slipped off his top form lately but Saturday’s win was his 8th in 17 races. He has earned $525,000. CITIUS has also earned $525,000 for his connections but he was claimed by Dunne Stable and Patrick DeCaires.

Race 5 – on the grass at 1 1/16 miles for $32,000 claiming and leading all the way was BINKS FOREST, owned and trained by Michael Wright. This 6yo gelding is 8 for 44 in his career and 2 for 10 this year. Jesse Campbell rode this gelding who has been going since last year, racing in Florida all winter. He is a true warrior.

Race 6 – maidens for $8,000 and UNBRIDLED RUCKUS woke up and led all the way to win in his 9th career race for John Cardella. The War Cry gelding was ridden by apprentice Nick Webb.
Race 7 – on the grass and CHIEF’S EDGE won his 2nd straight race for Chiefswood Stable and trainer Paul Attard. Justin Stein rode the Pulpit 4yp who won this $40,000 claiming race in his 3rd start of the year.

race 8 – ENCHANCED led all the way to win her maiden in her 3rd career start for owner Mike Rutherford. Mark Casse trains this Lkentucky bred by Malibu Moon. Justin Stein rode the winner.

Race 9  – Third win for MARK CASSE as CHOCOLATE RIDE burst between horses late to win this maiden allowance on the grass. This is a very promsiing 4yo who ran huge in his last start, back in October at Churchill Downs on dirt; This was the Candy Ride’s debut ont he grass but he sure liked it (and the comapny). Gary Boulanger rode this John Oxley 4yo.
