BIG WIN FOR CHIEFSWOOD
Lomaki runs 91 Beyer to win Grade 3, may be retired
Canadian-based CHIEFSWOOD FARM, owned by Robert and Mark Krembil, had a good day at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday when its A.P. Indy filly LOMAKI won the Grade III Endeavour Stakes on yielding grass under Chris DeCarlo. Favoured at 5 to 2, the filly drew in from the also eligible list for the race as major contender Lady Shakespeare was scratched.
Out of Debit Account, by Mr. Prospector. the Kentucky bred 5yo mare was a $425,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland September and is from the family of the good broodmare Awesome Account, dam of graded stakes winner ANGUILLA.
The Endeavour was the first stakes win for Lomaki, who began her career in 2008 but had been off from Dec. 2008 to Sept. 2009 before starting back in action. She had been 2nd in the River Memories Stakes at Woodbine in the fall on yielding grass.
She has won 4 of 12 career races.
Eric Coatrieux, trainer of Lomaki, said of the mare’s victory, “After that race (The $100,000 Marshua’s River S.) I thought we had a good, good shot to get this race. It worked out well. I’m not sure after this race what will happen. We thought about retiring her. She’s older now. I think it may be over after this – unless we come back for the next one (the Grade III Hillsborough S. on March 13 at Tampa Bay Downs.) I was really pleased with the race.” When asked if it was emotional that this may be the mare’s last race, Eric Coatrieux replied, “It is, a little bit.”
“This is a very brave mare,” said winning rider Chris DeCarlo, “and she just loved this surface. We got set up behind the lead group and she was relaxed and comfortable. I sent her up on the outside getting near the stretch and she got brushed by a runner inside us but that didn’t bother her and she put in nice run in mid-stretch and that was enough. The first time I rode her it was on the dirt and she didn’t like that at all and in her last there was a big field and traffic and she put in a big run in that one too. But today she just loved the ground and the race set up really well for us.”

Two prominent 3-year-old colts pointing toward Fair Grounds’ Grade II Risen Star Stakes Feb. 20 were given their last significant works Saturday morning in advance of next weekend’s final major prep for the Grade II Louisiana Derby March 27.
Sam-Son Farms’ Hotep, a full brother to last year’s Grade I Queen’s Plate winner Eye of the Leopard, breezed a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 flat Saturday morning in a move that met with trainer Mark Frostad’s full approval.
“It was a terrific work,” said Frostad later in the morning. “I was very pleased, and Robby (Albarado, jockey) was very pleased. When (Hotep) won his last start so impressively (Feb. 1), I expressed some concern that running back in the Risen Star might come up a little too quick. I wanted to see how he came out of that race. However, he’s been training so forwardly since then I’ve decided that it’s not going to be a problem. We’re in good shape.”
HOTEP ran a 79 Beyer Figure when he won his most recent race.
Meanwhile, GIANT’S TOMB will compete in a turf allowance today and Frostad has said the colt should go forward from a flat season debut.
CANADIANS ELSEWHERE
BOMBS AWAY! Friday was a wild day atGulfstream with a parade of longshots all afternoon. One of the best ones was ANARKO (CHI) who won the last race on the grass at 1 1 /8 miles under Canadian jockey ROBERT LANDRY.
Anarko, owned and trained by Fred Seitz, led all the way at 53 to 1 and paid $108.00 to win.
The horse, by Sir Cat, triggered a $50,000 Pick 3 that ended in his race.
PRIZED DANCER, an Ontario bred by Purse Prize – La Ballerina by Matter of Honor, won her maiden on Saturday at Fair Grounds in New Orleans for $50K claiming. The filly is owned by Vinery and trained by Josie Carroll.
The breeders are Mike and Penny Lauer.
JAZZ NATION – City Zip – Jazz Star, won for $10,000 claiming yesterday at Gulfstream as the heavy favourite. The Ontario bed, from Box Arrow Farm, is now owned by Anthony Andrade.
In the same race, stakes winner Twisted Wit was 9th for latest trainer Monte Brinsley.
BRUNO SCHOCKEDANZ and MIKE WRIGHT JR.teamed up to winthe finale on the Gulfstream card yesterday with GOOD GENERAL, a Florida bred. The owner and trainer team were Sovereign Award winners years ago but the latter has not been training for many years.
SCOTT FAIRLIE won a race at Philadelphia Park yesterday with WINK AT THE GIRLS for $25,000 claiming.
Fairlie, a leading trainer at Woodbine, watched the horse win as the favourite and then be claimed by trainer Scott Lake.
KENTUCKY DERBY EARLY PREPS
RULE (Roman Ruler) led all the way to win the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday and earn a 98 Beyer Figure. He is a homebred for WinStar. Third in the race was UPTOWNCHARLYBROWN, the popular 3yo who was losing for the first time.
At Santa Anita, CARACORTADO (means Scarface) won the Robert Lewis with a 97 Beyer Figure. He is a California bred by Cat Dreams.

Horse power on display at OBS Monday

OCALA — Some nice horses will be on display in the four races that make up Monday’s Day of Champions at Ocala Breeders’ Sales.
The OBS Sprint (Fillies Division) has drawn a field of nine runners, including graded-stakes winner Aegean. The Wesley Ward-trainee won the Grade-III Kentucky Juvenile at Churchill Downs in April. Following that race, Aegean made a trip overseas and finished seventh in a field of 22 in the Grade-III Albany Stakes at Ascot. The filly has eanred $98,925.
Myakka City is stakes-placed, finishing third in the Desert Vixen at Calder. Dances With Ashley exits the Grade-III Old Hat at Gulfstream where she finished ninth. She easily defeated Myakka City at Calder in December.
Robtadi could be any kind of runner. Her only start was a win in a maiden sprint at Delta Downs. Some mighty fast horses have come from that Louisiana track.
The OBS Sprint (Colts & Geldings Division) includes multi-stakes-placed Mr. Green. He has twice defeated Bim Bam, who won Hallandale at Gulfstream on Feb. 7 over multiple-graded-stakes winner Interactif. Mr. Green has run just behind top 3-year-olds Jackson Bend and D’Funnybone and has earned $136,250.
Mississippi Hippie is stakes-placed as are Black Diamond Cat and Chief Counsel, who finished third in the NATC Futurity at Monmouth Park to Three Day Rush, who was at the time co-owned in a syndicate by three couples from The Villages.
The OBS Championship (Fillies Division) will have Miss Afleet Alex as a starter. The filly has run five times at five different tracks. She is stakes-placed and has a fourth-place finish in the Grade-II Demoiselle at
Aqueduct.
Allegation has two nice starts at Woodbine, Splendid Sound could be any kind of runner and Volare Cantare is cut to be a runner.
