Sovereign Awards may be on line….
A lot is at stake for some of the entrants in Saturday’s blockbuster Grade 3 stake the KENNEDY ROAD,named for
Art Stollery’s white faced fleetster who was one of the best racehorses this country has ever seen.
Sprinters line up for a chance at the Sovereign Award for not only CHAMPION SPRINTER but some have buzzed that
they could vote for the HORSE OF THE YEAR category based on what happens tomorrow.
(Although CHAMPS ELYSEES is the logical HORSE OF THE YEAR right now based on his record at Woodbine this
season – unless RAHY’S ATTORNEY wins inthe River Cities on Nov. 27 at Churchill perhaps?)
Trainer DANNY VELLA is on record saying that FIELD COMMISSION (PHOTO”) is the best sprinter in Canada and a win by him on Saturday would get him the Sovereign for sure (although Fatal Bullet was the best sprinter in canada – but he’s not eligible for this award this year).
JUNGLE WAVE may have something to say about that as he has traded wins and losses with Field Commission.
And what about EL BRUJO, who has found new life since he was freshened from the Queen’s Plate and returned to sprinting?
he won two graded stakes in the U.S. recently – okay not very fast -and is the leading candidate for champion 3yo it seems, perhaps along with AWESOME RHTYHM.
EL BRUJO could win sprinter, 3yo and maybe even HORSE OF THE YEAR with a win in the Kennedy Road.

WOODBINE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Someone closely involved in the local industry asked Thoroughblog yesterday ‘what is going on at Woodbine?’ with regards to the crazy longshot winners and head scratching results.
Well, it seems to be this way all the time when there is just 2 weeks left in the meeting.
Things kicked off last night with a 30 to 1 winner for owner/trainer Paul Buttigieg when TRAJECTORY LINE, a homebred, won for $16K maiden claiming.
Meanwhilem the gelding was down from $32K and other than his last poor run at 7 furlongs, had Beyers of 59, 57 and 65 (!) in 3 previous races.
STEP ON UP became the latest 5-TIME WINNER at Woodbine this year when he won from the allowance to $20K drop last night. He was not claimed from Equinox Stable.
That fave was followed by another fave – BAILEY’S RING won her 2nd career start in a maiden allowance in race 3 for Ontario sired gals. Bred by Errol Bailey (who brought us Soceity’s Chairman), the filly is by Where’s the Ring and is owned and trainer by laurie Silvera – his 10th winner of the meeting.
Harlequin Ranches and trainer Phil England are on a roll and won the 4th race with HIP HIP SINHA, who rallied from off the pace to win his maiden for $20K. A homebred, the gelding is my Mutakkdim.
SOMARVELOUS was 144 to 1 in his last race on Oct. 30, his first run since July. The 4yp $11,500 claimer was 4th that day.
Last night he was 8 to 1 and he won in a similar race at 1 1/16 miles.
Audre Cappuccitti owns and trains the gelding by Kinshasa.
While speed is not usually good on the Woodbine Poly these days, PURPLE MOON led all the way through just 5 furlongs for $10K claiming, race 6.
The filly was making her first start since July and wqas the 2nd winner for hot apprentice rider Omar Moreno on the night.
The 7th race, the featured allowance, resulted ina wild finish with a half a dozen gals battling for a slim lead in deep stretch.
The winner was FLASHY GOT EVEN, who went so long without winning and now has won twice in a row under Emma Wilson. Terra Racing owns and Nick Gonzalez trains.
And speaking of winning back to back races – FLOATING SKY was up to win the finale over 3 to 2 shot My island Girl and take her 2nd straight win since winning her maiden, She is owend and was bred by Phil Kives’ K-5 Racing Stable and Sandy McPherson trains.

| –– A $5,000 claiming race does not draw a lot of attention on most race cards.
However, some unusual circumstances Wednesday put a spotlight on the fifth race at Churchill Downs.
Grand Forks, a stakes-winning 12-year-old mare who has not started since August 2000, was entered in a
61/2-furlong race over the main track for owner and trainer Kathleen Costello, but she was scratched from the
12-horse field by the order of the stewards while in the paddock.
Though Grand Forks had her comeback temporarily thwarted, the fact that she was even in the entry box was the
source of some controversy.
The daughter of Quiet American has spent the past nine years as a broodmare on Rick Trontz’s Hopewell Farm in
Midway, but she had produced only one live foal, a filly by Skip Away who died just weeks after birth.

Montpellier retires as jockey
Constant Montpellier was making the rounds here Wednesday morning, saying his goodbyes after deciding to end a riding career that began in 1991.
Montpellier, who rode for the last time on Sept. 26, suffered a separated shoulder in a pre-race incident the
following afternoon. Shortly thereafter, he decided to hang up his tack.
“I just wasn’t enjoying it any more,” Montpellier said. “When you’re not really into it, now was a good time to
do it.”
Montpellier, 48, rode a record 142 winners at the 1993 Fort Erie meeting and was a Sovereign Award winner as outstanding apprentice that year.
Since relocating to Woodbine in 1994, Montpellier has been associated with champions Win City, Gandria, and
Lady Shari. Win City and Gandria both captured Fort Erie’s Prince of Wales Stakes.
Montpellier’s career featured 1,244 wins, with 53 of those coming in stakes. He added 1,408 seconds and 1,322 thirds from 10,084 mounts which earned $43,560,125.
