LETTER/COMMENT from Feb. 9
This was on the Blog post entitled START, it’s good so I had to reprint it:
The Feb.6 Blog had a few complaints about video streaming or lack thereof, due to the requirement of minimal wagering. Granted, the minimums are not onerous, but why have any ?
Racetracks establish websites and for some unknown reason fail to showcase their product. Are they that stupid?
On the other hand, you have “the-little-track-that-could” Tampa Bay Downs where savvy management realized that the bettor was important. What was a leaky roof circuit a few years ago, now has a handle that challenges Santa Anita.
You can go to the TAM website and watch the races without having an account, password or your mothers maiden name.
Keeneland is another track where the info just overwhelms the bettor.
I remember the days when there were no payphones at racetracks, when offtrack and Internet betting was starting, racetracks were reluctant in releasing
program numbers for each entry.
The paranoia still exists.

WOODBINE BACKSTRETCH OPENS
It’s – 25 this morning but let’s go!
TWENTY ONE TRAINERS have shipped in horses to Woodbine already and we only have to wait 2 months until the meeting starts.
The Woodbine Training Track opened for business on Wednesday morning, providing a clear signal that the start of the local 2011 Thoroughbred racing season is getting closer.
Trainer Sid Attard, who finished third in the standings last year with 46 wins, had a busy morning on the Woodbine backstretch.
The veteran was one of the first conditioners to test out the backstretch training track, which is a conventional dirt surface, as opposed to the Polytrack surface used for racing.
“We have 28 horses here and all 28 of them were sent out,” said Attard. “It was in very, very good shape this morning. They did a fantastic job getting it ready.”
Attard said he should have six more horses in by the end of the week.
“I can’t wait for the season to get underway,” said Attard, who recorded six stakes scores in 2010, along with $2,764,972 in purse earnings. “If this year can be like last year for us, we’ll all be happy. There is nothing to complain about.”
The first day of the Woodbine Thoroughbred meet is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 and runs 167 dates to December 4.

IN MEMORY OF DAIJIN
Just a few days ago, the regally bred Canadian stakes winner DAIJIN had her first foal in 7 years. A producer of champions and from the family of WITH APPROVAL, she foaled a Zensational colt by C-section in Kentucky at Hill ‘n’ Dale before she was stricken with colic.
She was put to sleep as she began to suffer:
BLOOD-HORSE REPORT:
Daijin, a stakes winner who produced a pair of stakes winners, died following complications from foaling Feb. 8 at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms near Lexington.
Daijin was a full sister to Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner and multiple grade I winner Touch Gold . Both were bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm, Star Stable, and Holtsinger, Inc. In addition, she was a half sister to Canadian champion With Approval.
Daijin (Deputy Minister–Passing Mood, by Buckpasser) produced two stakes winners from the cover of champion A.P. Indy . Handpainted, bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale and N.E.T.P., won the Ontario Debutante Stakes and My Dear Stakes in 2002, and two years later took the Goddess Stakes and Pan Zareta Handicap. Serenading, bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale, was named Canada’s champion older mare in 2009 after winning the Falls City Handicap (gr. II) and the Maple Leaf Stakes. She earned $538,754. Serenading produced her first foal last week, a Street Cry colt. Both Serenading and Handpainted raced for Hill ‘n’ Dale owner John Sikura and his brother, Glenn.

CANADIAN STUFF
With the WOODBINE backstretch beginning to get populated, some folks have left their spots in the U.S. and are making their way back home. Less than 2 months until Woodbine opens for racing!
EMMA-JAYNE WILSON rode with success at Parx Racing but that track has been plagued by bad weather and bad tracks and Wilson left to spend the rest of the winter in Florida. PATRICK HUSBANDS is also getting on horses at Palm Meadows.
