DAVID ANDERSON OFF TO BIG START IN 2018
Fresh off a nomination for Canada’s Outstanding Breeder of 2017, David Anderson’s ANDERSON FARMS (Ontario) is off to a fast start in 2018.
The exciting win by the 2-year-old SERGEI PROKOFIEV (a 20th century Russina composer) at Navan racecourse in Ireland was also a fun relief for Anderson who sold the colt last year on Day 3 of the Keeneland September yearling sale for $1.1 million. John Magnier et al bought the colt who is now a winner in two starts and getting rave reviews .
Trainer Aidan O’Brien told Sporting Life, “He’s a big, powerful horse and has plenty of speed. He came on as obviously he was never away before Dundalk.
“We’ll look at the Marble Hill or the Rochestown with him. Ryan said he didn’t think six would be a problem, five or six. He went to the line strong.
Orchard Beach, bred by Anderson in Ontario and by Tapit, was bought back for $200,000 as a yearling and raced twice for Anderson and trainer Roger Attfield, finishing third once. This is her first foal.
On the weekend, the Anderson bred filly INFLEXIBILITY, a finalist for Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and Turf Female last year, won her 4-year-old debut at Aqueduct in an allowance/optional turf race. Also by Scat Daddy, the filly is owned by Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence and she posted a 91 Beyer Figure for a time of 1:41.52 for 1 1/16 miles on turf.
STRONACH STABLE’S ALSO ON AN AWESOME ROLL
Freida Stronach accepted a Sovereign award for Adena Springs’ Outstanding Breeder Award last Thursday, the trophy for the Queenston Stakes at Woodbine for Silent Sting on Sunday and between, watched SOMETHING AWESOME continue his amazing run in the US. The Canadian bred by Awesome Again, who has come to life since leaving Woodbine and the all weather track, became a millionaire with his hard-fought victory in Saturday’s $1 million Charles Town Classic (G2),.
He will make his next start in the $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3) at legendary Pimlico Race Course.
The 48th running of the historic Pimlico Special will take place Friday, May 19 as part of the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Day program on the eve of the 143rd Preakness Stakes (G1), the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.
Something Awesome, trained by Laurel Park-based Jose Corrales and ridden by Hall of Famer Edgar Prado, can become the second straight Stronach-owned horse to win the 1 3/16-mile Pimlico Special following multi-millionaire Shaman Ghost in 2017.
“That’s what my main thing was, even before this race. That’s what I want to do, and he came back very well. He was ready to go again today,” Corrales said between races Sunday. “I’ll be very happy if I can win the Pimlico Special.”
The 1 1/8-mile Charles Town Classic, contested around three turns, was the third consecutive victory for Something Awesome, a gelded 7-year-old son of Awesome Again out of the Dance Floor mare Somethinaboutlaura.
It was also the fifth win from six starts since Corrales took over the training of Something Awesome last fall, including the seven-furlong General George (G3) Feb. 17 and the 1 1/8-mile Harrison E. Johnson Memorial March 17, both at Laurel.
