MAJESTIC – MOMENT OF MAJESTY tunes up for today’s Woodbine oaks.Dave Landry photo
OAKS ON TRIAL
A filly may get pass to Plate, boys all set too
The winner of today’s WOODBINE OAKS could go on to bigger and better tings – perhaps a shot at the boys in the Plate, but today’s race is a big test for all 8 gals who will have 1 1/8 miles in front of them on himd day.
It’s been drizzling and misty this morning but the chance of clearing this afternoon is good.
It is the biggest day of racing on the continent save for the presence of ZENYATTA, who is out at Hollywood Park for a historical run this evening. Zenyatta is going for 17 straight wins.
EMBUR’S SONG gets a slight nod only because it’s so uncertain how good she may be. She has a huge edge in Beyer Figures and if she can battle or stalk and not have to have the lead, she’s going to be tough. The ERNFOLD camp is so very, very confident and she had a big worlout recently with SAND COVE, worked better than that one and then Sand Cove nearly broke a track record yesterday when he won the Steady Growth Stakes.
Hmmmm.
The PLATE TRIAL choice is HOLLINGER – he looked super in a recent workout when manhandling Mobilizer. D’S WANDO is a serious threat under Emma-Jayne Wilson too. GIANT’S TOMB represents Sam-Son Farms.
IMPORTANT DAY FOR YOUNG MEN – Tyler Pizarro and Hollinger…Plate Trial is a must for a good outing

CTHS AWARDS NIGHT AT COPPER CREEK
On a misty, foggy evening, the top breeders in Ontario got together for an evening of fun and food for the annual awards that took place at the lovely Copper Creek Gold Club in Kleniburg.
The room for the dinner was spacious and lovely and the silent auction was popular with horsefolks from around the country.
Even on the even of a big race,, top trainers like ROGER ATTFIELD, MARK FROSTAD and IAN BLACk were in attendance along with folks from the big stables such as Adena Springs, Gardiner, Norse Ridge, Cara Bloodstock, Chiefswood etc.
There were 14 awards of photos by Dave Landry for breeders of historical grade 1 races in canada nd open graded events. There were 60 recognition awards for breeders of stakes winners plus stallion awards, a scholarship award and 25 year member awards.
The night was capped off by two big presentations.
The late MIKE BURNS SR. received a standing ovation when he was announced the Mint Julep Cup winner, a Blood-Horse, CTHS award for contributions to the industry. His children Patricia, Mike and Maryellen went up to accept the Cup for their father, one of the great sports photograhoers in the last half century.
And JOE AND ELLEN MCLELLAN were honoured as Breeders of the Year thanks to the exploits of RAHY’S ATTORNEY and GLITTER ROX, two homebreds that kick started their breeding businessa nd have led to to having about 10 horses now.
“We live for 5 to 9,” said Joe last night, beaming with pride. “We work hard at the barn, by dad always said that lots of people may have more money, more anything but they will never outwork me. That’s how we live and I love it.”
Joe credits Bob Anderson, Fred Setiz and his trainer Ian Black for helping his family get into the game.
“So many dominoes have to fall for this to happen, we have been lucky.”
MARSH SIDE GETS WIN BACK
DAILY RACING FORM report, excerpt..
Disqualified stakes winner reinstated
By Bill Tallon
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Marsh Side has been reinstated as the winner of Woodbine’s 2009 Northern Dancer Stakes.
The Ontario Racing Commission, which heard the appeals of Marsh Side’s owner, Robert Evans, and jockey, Javier Castellano, on May 26, released its decision on Friday afternoon.
Marsh Side had finished first in the Northern Dancer, which was run last Sept. 23 and offered Grade 1 status and a winner’s share of $450,000.
But the stewards disqualified Marsh Side and placed him fourth, ruling that the horse had come in and interfered with both the third-place finisher, Quijano, and fourth-place Champs Elysees in the stretch run.
The stewards did not post the inquiry sign, but Garrett Gomez, rider of Champs Elysees, claimed foul against both Marsh Side and Quijano.
Just As Well was elevated to the top spot, with Quijano and Champs Elysees each moving up a notch.
