A MONTH TO GO
A month of racing left at Woodbine and a matter of a couple of weeks before applications for racing dates are taken in by the Ontario Racing Commission.
It will be a long, tense winter for those of us who are seasonal work.
The annual migration to the south has begun for horses: Malcolm Pierce and Josie Carroll are headed to their stomping grounds, Fair grounds, while trainees for Mark Frostad are headed to Florida, the first year Frostad has not gone to Fair Grounds.
Reade Baker, Mark Casse, Mike DePaulo and Brian Lynch are all headed south, the latter is already spending a lot of time at Churchill.
LEINAN breaks through

Jim and Alice Sapara’s promising filly LEINAN broke through for her first stakes win yesterday at Woodbine when she came from off the pace to win the Glorious Song Stakes. It was trainer Josie Carroll’s 2nd stakes win of the weekend and Luis Contreras rode.
A debut winner at Keeneland in the spring, Leinan was tired in a return from a long layoff and then came off a curious race where she was not asked hard in the stretch when leading late and she was beaten.
Yesterday, she was off the pace of a run-off MECHAYA and was ridden with gusto by leading rider Contreras.
Contreras had lost the leading jockey title briefly last month but has been on a tear lately.
LEINAN is by Ready’s Image and is a Kentucky-bred. She may target grass for her next races.
Her winning Beyer Figure was 75.
KEENELAND NOTES
Rea, Regis continue spree
Canadian stallion VIBANK sold at Keeneland yesterday for just $1,000 to B & B Cattle Co. (if you Google that company, the one that comes up is not them, they have already received many emails regarding Vibank).
The stakes winner, bred by Gus Schickedanz, had been standing at Park Stud.
Sean Fitzhenry, breeder of the best Canadian bred of 2012, MARKETING MIX, purchased a mare for $45,000. SWEET KITTEN, by Kitten’s Joy, is a champion from Puerto Rico and she sold in foal to Cape Blanco.
Bill Stewart’s Black Canyon Thoroughbreds purchased SWEET RANSOM, a stakes placed Red Ransom mare in foal to Corinthian, for $47,000.
Steve Kemp (Ballcropy Training Centre) bought Canadian-bred MISS BLAKELY for $37,000. The Smart Strike stakes winner is in foal to OLD FORESTER.
Ron Clarkson paid $40,000 for SPINA, a stakes placed During mare in foal to Fort Prado and trainer Brian Lynch bought a Sharp Humor yearling for $16,000.

Consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent Purchased by Ben McElroy, Agent James Perron Racing Stable picked up this now 7-year-old mare for$11,000 at OBS April in 2007. After campaigning her through a career which saw her become a multiple stakes winner, graded stakes placed, and earner of more than $500,000, that group put her in foal to English
Channel and sold her last night for a healthy profit.
Editor’s note – Thoroughblog was informed that the mare is headed to owner Stan Dobson, who owns and breeders in Ontario at Hopefield Farms.
SHARP SECRETARY off to Australia
Woodbine favourite SHARP SECRETARY, who raced for trainer Lorne Richards, sold at Keeneland to Steve Krem and is headed to Australia.
