Albertans Jim and Susan Hill have bought six yearlings for $840,000 as the couple looks to expand their racing interests. The Hills race all over and have their main string at Woodbine. They won the Breeders’ Stakes last year with Miami Deco.
Among their purchases was an Ontario bred by Pulpit out of Chopinina for $195,000, sold by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, as agent.
Windhaven’s William D. Graham, breeder of this year’s good 3-year-old filly Joyful Victory (Tapit), sold aLion Heart colt he bred out of the mare Captivating (Arch)
brought $290,000 at September. The Ontario-bred colt, consigned by Four Star
Sales, sold as hip 631 to Canadian-based trainer Mark Casse, agent. Graham had
purchased the colt’s dam as a yearling for C$65,000 at the 2003 FTCSEP sale, and while
Captivating didn’t win on the track, she=s already been a fine
producer for her connections.
Her first foal is the Windhaven homebred Dancing Raven (Tomahawk). That multiple
stakes-winning 4-year-old filly has been first or second in nine of 15 and earned in excess of $370,000. She most recently was third in the Algoma S. at Woodbine
Sept. 5.
Captivating=s second foal, the unraced 2-yearold Penelope Plum (Badge of Silver), turned a solid
profit as a $75,000 KEESEP yearling last year, but the Lion Heart colt proved different class in the ring yesterday. Graham said he anticipated plenty of interest, but that the colt exceeded expectations.
Graham is the president and CEO of Graham Bros. Construction Ltd., which is involved in road construction. Graham has been in horse racing since the early 1960s and has
campaigned the likes of Blondeinamotel (Bates Motel), who won the Woodbine Oaks under jockey Pat Day in 1989. The filly also ran second in that year=s GI Ashland S. here at Keeneland and ran third in the GI Kentucky Oaks. Blondeinamotel was trained by Michael Doyle, who sat alongside Graham yesterday at the sale.
