WOODBINE THURSDAY
Maiden events on the grass for older guys and 2-year-old fillies on the Polytrack were the headline events yesterday.
KHULNA, owned and bred by Vera and Mke Simpson, took off to a huge lead in his first grass, route race and won by more than 3 lengths to win the maiden allowance event for Ontario sired fellows. The Tejano Run 3yo is out of Casual Glance and is trained by Reade Baker.
Barb Minshall’s FUTURE SURPRISE, a 2yo by Niigon – Rare Vision by My Livermore, loved moving out in distance for her 2nd career race and own her maiden nicely as the favourite a race later. She is a homebred. In that race, a first time starter named VROUW MARIA broken down late in the race.
PRESQUE ISLE MILE TONIGHT
Stag party could erupt after Presque Isle Mile
By BOB JARZOMSKI, Erie Times-News
Stunning Stag has run in all but one of its 29 races at Toronto’s Woodbine. That one was the 2010 Presque Isle Mile, when the 7-year-old gelding finished third to record-setting Gayego.
On the U.S. side of Lake Erie, Stunning Stag is one of the favorites in the 12-horse field in today’s $250,000 Presque Isle Mile at Presque Isle Downs & Casino. Post time for the ninth race is 9:05 p.m.
Jockey Gerry Olguin took the blame for Stunning Stag’s failure to catch Gayego, who set the track record of 1 minute, 34.9 seconds for the mile.
“Gerry came back and said it was his fault, he moved too soon,” trainer Sid Attard told The Daily Racing Form. “He begged me to come back.”
Stunning Stag, listed at 4-1, faces a strong field.
“The Mile is stacked, and we’re very pleased with the depth in a full field,” PID stakes coordinator and paddock judge Jim Cornes said.

WOODBINE LIVE! UPDATE
Toronto Star report
PAUL MOLONY
While Councillor Doug Ford touts a mall for the Port Lands, no shovels have broken ground on a giant entertainment-shopping complex in his own ward, apparently because it’s having trouble attracting retailers.
The Woodbine Live! project at Woodbine Racetrack was trumpeted by Mayor Rob Ford on the campaign trail last year as proof he can get the private sector behind a megaproject.
“I know how to deal with CEOs of huge corporations — that’s how I landed the largest development in Toronto’s history,” Ford, then councillor for Ward 2 Etobicoke North, told a newspaper last fall. “Woodbine Live! — I did that.”
Baltimore-based The Cordish Companies, partnering on the project with the race track’s operator, told the Star in June 2010 that construction would start that fall, with the help of generous tax breaks from the city.
An employment centre was to open with a city-negotiated mandate to give residents of job-starved north Etobicoke first crack at the promised 9,000 permanent positions.
Shortly before he was elected mayor and his brother, Doug, elected to replace him as Ward 2 councillor, Rob Ford said: “People are excited — it’s going to revitalize Rexdale. Tourists will get off the plane and go to Rexdale.”
