TWO SUPPLEMENTED TO QUEEN’S PLATE, 4 to OAKS AT 2ND PAYMENT
Most of the major players are still on track for the big races of the summer, the WOODBINE OAKS and the QUEEN’S PLATE, June 15 and July 6 respectively.
In the Oaks picture, PALADIN BAY and LEXIE LOU are still in the top few although ARAGORN AMI, also listed as a top Plate contender, is sidelined after going 2 for 2 this year.
The Oaks 2nd payment lured a few supplements including Fury Stakes winner WILD CATOMINE (Milwaukee Brew) and GDANSK, 2nd in an allowance race last weekend.
The QUEEN’S PLATE has 59 nominees including 2 supplements, the filly LEXIE LOU and Bear Stables’ MAN O BEAR.
Meanwhile WE MISS ARTIE, the Plate favourite who has been duking it out with the top American 3yos this season, had his first workout since the Kentucky Derby on Monday morning. At the Saratoga training dirt, WE MISS ARTIE prepped 4 furlongs in 48.88, 3rd best of 30 workers at the distance that morning.

HARD TO BEAR – Asserting Bear solidifies Plate position, but is dq’d
The good news for Bear Stables’ ASSERTING BEAR, the large, smooth striding but very lazy 3-year-old is that he is now at the top of the pack of Queen’s Plate contenders. The son of Bear’s Kid won the Marine Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday despite jumping a shadow at the quarter pole.
The bad news? He was disqualified after a long inquiry, being judged guilty of interfering with fellow Plate contender Ami’s Holiday who finished third.
CONQUEST TOP GUN, the $525,000 2yo purchase by Conquest Stables and an American-bred, led all the way and landed second but was moved up to first for trainer Mark Casse. Eurico da Silva was the rider. Conquest Top Gun is by Pioneerof the Nile out of Early Vintage by Jump Start. He had just won his maiden at Keeneland in his 4th career start.
The small, six-horse field also featured Queen’s Plate eligibles Heart to Heart, who did not seem comfortable with the switch back to Polytrack (he just won on the grass) and Tower of Texas, who was very wide all the way but closed well for trainer Roger Attfield.
As for the disqualification, it was somewhat of a surprise as the pan shot indicated that Ami’s Holiday was simply trying to get up into a hole but it closed up a bit before he was actually in there. The infraction appeared marginal at best but the stewards voted (individually it is hoped) that the winner needed to come down.
While Casse trainee Conquest Top Gun is not a Plate eligible, the Casse trainee MATADOR is and he was scratched from the Marine to complete a 5-horse field on Wednesday night at the allowance level.
ASSERTING BEAR, 4th in the Grade 3 Spiral 2 starts ago and 8th in the Blue Grass (Grade 1) last time, had his 5th different rider in Chantal Sutherland Kruse. The gelding was a $50,000 yearling purchase from breeder John Carey at the 2011 CTHS (Ont.). yearling sale.

A few races after the sting of the questionable disqualification of Asserting Bear in the Marine, trainer Reade Baker got a win anyway when the champion mare SOLID APPEAL rallied to win the Nassau Stakes (Grade 2) for the second consecutive year.
SOLID APPEAL, owned by Jim and Susan Hill of Calgary, Alberta, was last year’s champion turf female at the Sovereign Awards and she loves the Woodbine turf course.
WHY KATHERINE was a brave 2nd for Terra Racing and trainer Kevin Attard while Sam-Son Farms’ DECEPTIVE VISION, heavily bet, was burned out in a tough pace battle but stayed on for third place.

MORE SUNDAY – ONE-EYED FILLY ROMPS
EXPLOSIVE LEAH, a $10,000 yearling purchase by Chris Jolin and Leah Ouellette at the CTHS sept. yearling sale 2 years ago, won her debut on the lead in the last race on Sunday. This filly is missing her left eye but she had shown a lot of speed in her workouts (3 bullet preps last year at Fort Erie) and she is by top sire Silent Name (Jpn). The dam is Explosive Story, an unraced Radio Star mare. Cara Bloodstock sold the filly for HJT Stable. Juan Crawford rode this fast filly who paid $112.70 to win and ran 6 furlongs in 1:11.34.
IMAGINE LENNON won RACE 1 with a front running trip and he is 2 for 2 this season (and the 14th horse to win 2 races this season at Woodbine). The winner is owned by Tallyho Racing Ltd. and trained by Norm McKnight. The son of War Cry was ridden by Sheena Ryan in the $12,500 claiming dash.
Race 2- ONLINE VALENTINE was taking a big edge on the field of maidens for $10,000 but she also was coming off a two-year layoff. She was ready to go, however, and was up to win for owner/trainer Bruce Pollock and co-owners Kellam, Buck and Lucy Roman. The 6yo mare is by Victory Gallopm best known for his huge win in the Belmont Stakes over Real Quiet years ago. Davy Moran rode.
RACE 3 – BESTAVAILABLE had his favourite rider back on board last time he raced (Jesse Campbell) and this 4yo gelding rallied to win the 1 1/16 mile race for $8,000 for owner and trainer Mike Wright. The chestnut if 3 for 21 in his career and it was his 8th start of of 2014, having raced in Florida all winter.
RACE 4- A split of a maiden allowance race for Ontario sired 3yo old fillies and older and this split went a few hundredths of a second quicker, 1:11.28. The winner was 2nd time starter DIAMONDS ARE B F F, a popular pick first time out this season when she was 3rdin a key race won by Why the Ring. The filly is by Alphabet Soup out of Executive Diamond by Bold Executive and she is a homebred for Paul Buttigieg, who co-owns with Jimmy Goodman.
RACE 6 – Lawrence Deakins Racing Stable’s LIBERTY HALL led all the way to win her maiden for $16,000 under Eurico da Silva. Ross Armata trains the Milw3aukee Brew filly who is out of the good producer Ring Star (Great Gladiator) and bred by Bill Hicks and Ballycroy Training Centre. The filly had not been a factor in 2 races this season and was making her 10th career start.
RACE 7 – Fillies and mares for $40,000 going 6 furlongs on Polytrack and it was the 3yo SHE AIN’T BAD winning her 2nd race of the year in her 2nd start for 3 Sons Racing Stable Ltd. and trainer Robert Tiller. The Where’s the Ring filly, bred by Ericka Rusnak (also breeder of top Oaks contender Paladin Bay) is 3 for 4 in her career and was ridden by Luis Contreras.
RACE 9 – This was the only other race of the day that went in solid time – the winning Beyer was 78 and it was HOLD THE GOLD who swept past 3 to 5 favourite AMETHEA to win her career debut for Stronach Stables and trainer Brian Lynch. It was the rapid pace set in part by the big favourite (21 2/5, 44) that set things up for the beginner by Street Cry (Ire) – Collect the Cash, by Dynaformer. The final time was 1:16 4/5. Eurcio da Silva was the winning rider.
CANADIAN BRED 3YO COLT wins 2014 debut
LULU LE MON, who came to Woodbine for the Cup & Saucer last season, won his 2014 opener at Delaware Park on the weekend. The son of Lemon Drop Kid was bred by Bill Graham’s Windhaven and he is a half brother to Boisterous and Peyton. Chart from Thoroughbred Daily news:

LULU LE’ MON (c, 3, Lemon Drop Kid–Emanating {SW & GISP, $273,030}, by Cox’s Ridge), a half-brother to
Boisterous (Distorted Humor), GISW, $1,419,874, broke through with an impressive last-to-first maiden
win over the Laurel grass at second asking last September. He closed out his juvenile campaign with a
seventh-place finish as the 9-5 chalk in Woodbines Cup and Saucer S. Oct. 20. Adding blinkers for his
sophomore debut, the even-money favorite kept them within reach in fourth, made his move on the far turn,
and gutted out a half-length tally while drifting in a bit throughout the stretch run. Protection (Exchange Rate)
was second. The winner is also a half to Peyton (Tale of the Cat), MGSP, $380,361. Sales history: $110,000

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) is delighted to announce that on Saturday, June 7th at 6 p.m. we will be honouring 50 breeders of 65 Ontario-Bred champions of 2013 at our 32nd Annual Awards Dinner at Copper Creek Golf Club in Kleinberg, Ontario.
This year’s event will honour Sam-Son Farm as Breeder of the Year for their outstanding achievement as the breeder of winners such as His Race to Win, Part the Seas, Smartyfly and 2013’s Champion Three-Year-Old Male and Horse of the Year, Up With the Birds.
We are also pleased to announce that long time breeder and CTHS President, R. Glenn Sikura, is this year’s recipient of the Blood-Horse Mint Julep Cup for his lifetime contribution and tireless dedication to the horse breeding industry.
The Board of Directors will also honour Mr. Bill Tallon with a Special Award of Merit for his invaluable lifetime contribution to the Horse Racing Industry.
Other award recipients include Milwaukee Brew for 2013 Top 1st Crop Ontario Sire, as well as Bold Executive, Niigon, and Silent Name (JPN) for 2013 Top Ontario Stallions.
