Marathon, fillies, mares kick off 2-day Championships
The long winded dudes (there is a filly in the race to, start off the 2-day BREEDERS’ CUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS today at CHURCHILL DOWNS. The Marathon is 1 3/4 miles and ACOMO is the one to beat.
It’s a TWILIGHT card, beginning at 4:10, so the lights will be turned on as the LADIES’ CLASSIC comes close.
The Canadians in action today are DELIGHTFUL MARY, in the Juv Fillies (she is Woodbine trained), WYOMIA and NEW NORMAL in the Juv. Filly Turf, Canadian trained gals, and MISS KELLER in the Mare Turf and MILWAUKEE APPEAL in the Ladies’ Classic.
MISS KELLER QUOTES:
“She probably made the lead too soon on that track (Woodbine). It makes you question whether she can get the mile-and-a-quarter or the mile-and-three-eighths. But on the inside tracks, I don’t think that’s the case. She hates that big course in Canada. She does much better on the smaller courses.”

Thursday afternoon, Zenyatta schooled in the paddock during the fourth race. She was escorted in by two county sheriffs and drew quite a crowd both in and around the paddock to watch her. Mostly she just stood in the schooling stall and watched all the silly people, although she did seem to like Jaycito who was in the stall next to her and checked him out through the divider bars.

Track Star’s Namesake a Breeders’ Cup Runner

Wyomia Tyus, one of America’s biggest track stars of the past, will have a 2-year-old filly named after her running in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs. Wyomia, a daughter of Vindication, will compete in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IIT) Nov. 5, starting from post 8 in the field of 14. The dark bay or brown filly was 12-1 on the morning line.
Real estate investor Ed Seltzer owns Wyomia in partnership with Beverly Anderson and he bred the filly in partnership with his ex-wife, Marilyn.
“I was called by Ed several weeks ago and he left a message not saying what it was about” said Tyus, who won back-to-back gold medals in the 100 meters at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. “I didn’t know who this person was, but I had a talk with him. At first I was like, ‘Oh really; oh that’s nice. I hope the horse is a good one.’ I was shocked. Then I continued to talk to Ed and got to know him and what a wonderful person he seems to be, so now I feel somewhat honored.”

Every player I have spoken with this week is excited about the Breeders Cup. This year it is held at Churchill Downs, one of the most takeout friendly tracks in North America.
With this year’s Breeders Cup fast approaching, I’d be remiss as HANA’s President if I didn’t point out a decidedly player unfriendly policy being carried out by Woodbine against Canadian players.
If you play this year’s Breeders Cup through HPI and are fortunate enough to hit a trifecta, superfecta, or Pick 3, you can expect Woodbine to pay you off as if the takeout rate was between 25% and 27%, despite the fact that the takeout for these wagers at Churchill Downs is 19%.

Horse racing has become another victim of the generational divide

If modern sports TV is all about storytelling, please explain the demise of horse racing? The purported sport of kings is full of great stories, from Seabiscuit to Secretariat to Zenyatta, the filly who will no doubt be the subject of a motion picture should she win her second consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday. The jockeys – from Ragin’ Cajun Calvin Borel to Angel Cordero Jr. – are Runyonesque. The trainers are likewise a casting call for the cinema.
Yet horse racing has become another victim of the generational divide, lost to the Millennials. Even as the sport celebrates its remarkable athletes Friday and Saturday at Churchill Downs, there is talk of a lost generation of fans and viewers. As great as the story of Zenyatta will be (yes, she’s named for The Police album Zenyatta Mondatta), the sense is that the racing industry will be unable to parlay it into any meaningful change in its profile among the sports properties on TV.

THURSDAY AT WOODBINE
Husbands wins 2, closing gap on Da Silva
The fields start to get really, really big here at ole Woodbine – there were over 250 horses entered for Saturday and Sundays cards.
Today, there is 10 events to go hand in hand with Breeders’ Cup (although the Cup starts at 4 and is twilight)
Thursday, the card started off with logical winner GRISAILLE, a 2yo Ontario bred by El Prado who won on the class drop from maiden allowance to maiden claiming and the turf- to Polytrack move. Owned by Copper Penny Stables, she was ridden by the popular Luis Contreras and is trained by Robert Tiller. Adena Springs bred the filly who was making her 6th start – it was for $62,500.
Owner and trainer CHRIS STEVE has raced just 5 starters in Ontario this year bu he won the 2nd race yesterday with OCALA DAWN, who had a late rider change to Krista Carignan. The 4to filly was 39 to 1 in the $16,000 claiming race. She had been blanked in 8 races this season but had raced just 4 times for Steve. The winner is a Kiridashi filly.
Jockey PATRICK HUSBANDS narrowed the gap in the rider’s standings when he won the 3rd race on board even money shot SARAROYAL, a Kentucky bred by Royal Adademy owned by David Sorokolit, who bred the filly. The 4yo filly is trained by Darwin Banach.
KIRKLAND LAKE became a 5-time winner this year when he took the 4th for $32,000. The Pioneering 3yo is owned by Hugh and Lorill Harlington and trained by Scott Fairlie. He raced 6 furlongs in 1:09 4/5 and was not claimed.
Husbands was at it again on even money fave SCHOOL GIRL, who won the 5th for $50,000 claiming, her 3rd win of the year. The Snow Ridge mare is owned and trained by Steve Asmussen.
CAP THAT won her maiden in race 6 for $25,000 claiming, dropping down from maiden allowance for owner and trainer Audre Cappuccitti. The filly, by Holy Bull out of Woofy, was making her 4th start and was 2nd time with Lasix.
Cappuccitti claimed LET’S GET ROCKIN out of race 8 (yes, he’s grey) and that one won his maiden for $20,000 in his 4th start. Brian Lunch owned and trained the gelding.
