DOH! PASO DOBLE MISSES IN OVERSKATE
Trainer Casse aims to set win record today with claimer

PASO DOBLE was just yards away from becoming a cool little answer to a neat trivia question and a special horse for Mark Casse last night when he led late in the Overskate Stakes. The Bold n Flashy fellow was odds on to win the 7 furlong stake and become the 90th winner for Casse at Woodbine this season, a record. The previous record is 89 by the late Frank Passero in 1995.

But PASO DOBLE got forced into a mad battle through a 2nd quarter by longshot Bug’s Bug and he was caught late by GYSPY RING, Paul Buttigieg’s gritty homebred Where’s the Ring gelding.
The time of 1:21 2/5 was suinning over a fast Polytrack, and resulted in a 91 Beyer for the winner.

Gypsy Ring’s mum, GYPSY GENNA (Varick) has 8 foals of racing age including a 2yo of 2011 (Gypsy’s Kin), GYPSY RING is her 6th foal.
Her other winners have been Georgio J, Sundar, Goss the Man and Foxy Clever.
The yearling full brother to this one sold to Bear Stables earlier this month for $95,000.

MARK CASSE has one runner today – the $12,500 claimer (he’s a stakes winner, however. LEGAL REVIEW, in race 7. He is 6 to 1 and the race goes at 4:55 p.m.
It would be a fitting win since the gelding is owned by Woodford Racing, in part, and that group got Casse rolling locally a few years ago.

MORE WEDNESDAY

TIERRA DEL TIGRE led all the way to win the 1 1/16 mile first race for $50K older males. The son of Catienus is currently owned by Ace Racing, Phil Stefaniak and E. Bona.
Emma-Jayne Wilson guied the gelding to the win.

NAPOLI came off a June-Sept. layoff and won race 2, an Ontario sired allowance race. The Bold Executive – Consort’s Choice 3yo, owned by Star Five Stable and trained by Pat Parente, was up to beat HAWK OVER HEATH right on the money but he was always in the pace battle. Ron House bred the grey gelding who was riddeb by Justin Stein.

Tricia Greer’s CHANTE DAN won her maiden at 9 furlongs in race 3 for $25,000 claiming, Ontario sired. The filly is by Domasca Dan out of Jovial Zone by Wild Zone and was bred by Greer. Bill Tharrenos trains the 3yo who was the 2nd winner for Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Jockey Jesse Campbell had a shrewd ride on THEATRE QUEEN for Janes, Janeane and Arike Everatt-Meeuse and Pam Edel in race 4 and guided the Ontario bred by Bob and JOhn to her maiden win.
Coming off an ccident last weekend in which he reportedly hurt his riubs, Campbell had the 2yo tucked in behind horses for most of the 6 furlongs and then he angled her out in time to win the $20K claiming event. Greg de Gannes was winning his first race since returning to training after several weeks of absence.

Linmac Farms’ SHARP BEAUTY likes Wednesday nights. She won again under the lights last night after speeding to a huge lead through 6 furlongs and holding on to win over a fast surface. She is a Sharp Humpor gal trained by John Cardella.

The 6 furlongs in race 6 for $20K claimers went in 1:09 3/5 and the pace battle was won by FOREST JUSTICE, owned by Rolph Davis and trained by Robert Tiller. The gelding is a homebred for Davis, produced from the mare Just Humor Me, by Distorted Humor. Eurico Rosa Da Silva rode the 4yo.

MIMI COOPER, a tough mare, won the last race for Maggi Moss for $20,000 claiming and also led all the way on what was certainly a speed condusive track.

Three horses on the evening were eased and/or vanned off according to Equibase charts.

RAPID REDUX – SATURDAY

Mountaineer release

The remarkable Rapid Redux  bids to move within one of the modern-day US record for consecutive victories on Friday when he seeks his 18th straight win at Mountaineer in West Virginia.

The five-year-old gelding contests a minor $14,900 starter allowance contest on the dirt over 1m (2.55am Sat BST) in which he will start heavy favourite against seven rivals as he chasesthe 19-win mark achieved by the great Zenyatta and low-level New Mexico mare Peppers Pride.

Claimed at Penn National in October 2010, Rapid Redux started his impressive sequence at the same track in December last year, since when he has raced at seven different tracks at distances from 5f to 1m1f.

All of these wins have come in low-level contests, the most recent victory coming a Charles Town on September 16.

“We tend to like the lesser-known tracks – Thistledown, Charles Town, Mountaineer, Penn National,” said owner Robert Cole, speaking to the Blood-Horse.

“We like to run where somebody from New York or Philly might not run and it has worked so far.”

With a career record that now stands at 23 victories from 37 races, Rapid Redux’s current sequence of 17 straight wins is the longest for any male US horse since 1900.
