CHAIRMAN RUNS HUGE – WYOMIA WINS AT WOODBINE
Canadian-bred horses have started to make some noise south of the border in recent months (El Brujo, etc.). and what a race old SOCIETY’S CHAIRMAN ran yesterday when 2nd to the champion GIO PONTI in the Grade 1 Shadwell Mile. For the Chairman, who has only run twice at Woodbine so he is not eligible for any Sovereign awards, the rally he put in from last turning for hiome was sparkling and noble but Gio Ponti was under wraps the entire wire and won handily with a 99 Beyer Figure.
Society’s Chairman’s 98 matched one of his best Beyer Figures. He is owned by Charles Fipke and trained by Roger Attfield.
At Woodbine, the Grade 3 Mazarine, sometimes a good gauge as to who is the best Canadian-based 2yo filly, was run and it was WYOMIA who led all the way for owner Ed Seltzer and Bev Anderson as well as trainer Dan Vella. The dark bay gal had just won her maiden in fine fashion on the strech out to a 2 turn distance.
Saturday, she beat the highly touted DELIGHTFUL MARY, previously undefeated for John Oxley.
Impressive as it was, the Beyer Figure was super duper too – 91 for the 2yo.
The filly is listed as a yearling sales purchase at $145K – she was bred by Seltzer and Marilyn Seltzer.
She is by Vindicationk out of the mare Beyond the Sun, by Kingmambo.
Beyond the Sun’s 3rd dam is none other than the fancy WINDFIELDS FARM blue hen mare ROYAL STATUTE, dam of AWAASIF, AKUREYRI and others.
First-time starters had a field day at Woodbine on Saturday.
TIME FOR THE STARS (Aldebaran), an Ontario bred, was an overlay at 21 to 1 and he won his debut in race 1 for $40K. The dam of the 2yo colt, Time to Meet, was a very good 2yo. Tino Attard trains for George Iannou.
ROBYNPETERTOPAYPAUL, a 2yo filly by Where’s the Ring out of Executive Woman, was all the rage in a maiden allowance for ONtario sired 2yo fillies and she won on the pace for F. Panza and trainer Sam DiPasquale (who was already 29% with debut winners from starters going into the race!).
And then it was RED STRIKE’S turn – the Smart Strike 3yo gelding from Sam-Son Farms who was all the buzz for several weeks. At 10 to 1 in the morning line, he went off at 9 to 5 and won handily as most predicted.
Congrats to trainer Alison Crook who won her 2nd Woodbine race with CLEMENTIS, who upset the field in race 8, an allowance on turf for Ontario sired gals. The Perigee Moon miss, bred by Mike Byrne, led all the way in only her 2nd turf attempt.
You had to like CHILKOOT PASS in the 9th – he was 12 to 1 but had drawn in from the also eligible list and had just missed in his previous race at the $11,500 level. Fresh horses (he had not raced since August 7) are so very deadly at this time of year.

WE WANT MO!!
94 Beyer in Champagne romp
UNCLE MO is a big favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after he stayed undefeated through a win in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes at Belmont. The Indian Charlie colt battled through heavy pace fractions but then pulled away, looking more lke a Bull than a Mo.
He came down from his 102 Beyer Figure than he earned when he won his debut, a 94 yesterday over a very fast Belmont surface.
He is out of the Arch mare Playa Maya, who won 3 of 6 races, and he has 2 winning siblongs. He was a $220K yearling purchase at Keeneland Sept.
That PROVISO got up and won her 4th straight GRADE 1 RACE WAS UNREAL YESTERDAY. The Juddmonte filly, by Dansili, looked beatn for sure towards the end of the 1 mile First Lady at Keeneland. But somehow, the gal turned on the jets and got up to beat C S Silk, who must have thought she had won simply because she had fought so hard to get past Wasted Tears.
The last 2 furlongs of the race was run in a bizarre 21 4/5!
It was a big day for first crop sire BERNARDINI 2YO’S as A Z WARRIOR won the Frizette for owner/breeder Zayat Stables at Belmont and Godolphin’s BIODETTI won the Group 1 GRAN CRITERIUM in Italy. The latter was a $350,000 yearling purchase and he is out of the mare Lyphard’s Delta, by Lyphard.
Both A Z Warrior and Biondetti are expected to head to the Breeders’ Cup.

Dashers Six Takes The Lady of the Lake Stakes
FORT ERIE, October 9….On a sunny Saturday at Fort Erie Race Track, Dashers Six ended her racing career in style when taking the $35,000 Lady of the Lake Stakes for Quarter Horse fillies and mares.
The 5 year-old mare, who is trained and owned by Clinton Crawford won the 350 yard event in a final time of 16.02. She will now be retired to the breeding shed.
It had been a long time between drinks for the bay who hadn’t won a race since May 16th when competing at Ajax Downs. “I claimed her for one of my owners in Louisiana a while back,” explained Crawford. “When she was coming to the end of her racing career he gave her to me. She will become a broodmare now.”
Dashers Six was the third winner on the day for jockey Brian Bell who won the first race with Unacompanied Minor at 12-1as well as the fourth race with the grey filly Miss Pollys Folly. “Clint and his crew really got her (Dashers Six) ready, she had to fight right to the wire,” said Bell. “She was lit up like a firecracker today.”
Dashers Six who is by the sire Dashin Bye returned $12.60 for the win, $4.60 to place and $2.80 to show. Miss Bedlan was second and the favourite Slick Chick Countess finished third.
Earlier in the day, young rider and home town girl Chesley Willick won her first race aboard Try and Love Again for trainer Joe Tavares. Chesley, who works as an exercise rider at Fort Erie Race Track was so happy the win came on her home turf. “This is the best feeling ever!” “I sure hope I can double up.” That wish became a reality when Girlsandacoronaforme won the finale with Willick in the irons.
Live Quarter Horse racing returns on Saturday, October 16th with a 1:30 post time.
The weekend of October 23rd and 24th will have added attractions for families as well as the Battle of the Breeds – featuring mixed race cards and two races in which Quarter Horses will race against Thoroughbreds. Post time will be moved up to 12:30 for the final weekend.
