DREAM IS TRUE
heavy rain not good news for faves in Nearctic
Paul Buttigieg’s homebred PHIL’S DREAM, an Ontario sired 5yo, loved a wet grass and took aGrade 1 race at Woodbine yesterday, the Nearctic, a Win and You’re IN Event for the Breeders’ Cup. The Philanthropist – Dream a Dream (GB), Emperior Jones gelding is 6 for 8 this year after missing all of 2012 with a tendon injury. The gelding is the last reported foal according to pedigreequery.com for the mare.
Phil’s Dream will not be going to the Breeders’ Cup as he is not nominated. Rick Hiyashi is the assistant trainer for Buttigieg, who rarely is seen at the races for his horses.
MORE SUNDAY – big day for trainer Darwin Banach who won 2 races to continue a strong season. His father’s MISS ECHO DURING won the first race for $20,00 claiming, her 3rd score this year from 6 races.
Banach also won with the 2yo beginner HOPE FOR FAME, bred by Punch and Anne Kent’s Hope Stock Farm in Ontario. This firster is by Sligo Bay (Ire) out of Chateau de Chillon by Quest for Fame, beautofully bred for the grass and long distances. But he was very ready for his debut at 6 furlongs on Polytrack and rallied to win in fine fashion. Banach owns the 2yo with Lauretta Anne Kent.
SLY ASPIOS was a nice price at 7 to 2 winning the 3rd race for Phil and Sue Gracey, who won the 3yo by Purse. Bred by Donver Stables, this 3yo is 2 for 9 in his career and won the $25,00 claiig race from off the pace under Steve Bahen.
The faster split of the 2yo Ontario sired maiden race went to TOTAL ACCOUNTING, another son of Sligo Bay (Ire). This guy was making his 2nd career start for Martha Gonzalez and Horsen Around Racing. He was bred by Paradox Farm is was a $15,000 2yo purchase in June in Florida. His time was 1:11.46.
Race 5 was run in driving rain and was still on the grass and it was LENNON who led all the way for his 2nd win in his 5th race. The winner took the allowance race Under Slade callaghan, who rode for owner/trainer/wife Kelly.
A maiden allowance for 2yo willies, open, was race 6 and a longshot, RUSSIAN JEWEL, won her debut for owner and breeder Howard Walton. The Wildcat Heir homebred (sire is 20% with 2yo debut winners!) was 2to 1 to. Sid Attard trains.
NORTHERN BRUCE was 25 to 1 and won race 7 to light up the first and second Pick 4/s The winner is a Silent Name homebred for Arthus Amos and he was making his 3rd start off the layoff. Emile Ramsammy rode.
TWO WONDERS won race 9, a $25,00 claiming race for Lorna Possler and Nick Gonzalez. The winner is 10 for 39 in her career.
The last race went to Jim and Susan Hill’s HOLY WHIRL WIND, who rated off the pace in the 6 furlong maiden allowance and rallied to win under Jim McAleney. The Super High 5 was not won by one person so the carryover is $24,000 going into today’s card.
The PIck 4’s paid $40,000 and $2,400 respectively.
DANCE AGAIN latest stakes winner for Sam-Son
The red-hot Sam-Son farms won two races on Saturday including the Carotene Stakes, worth $150,000. The filly Dance Again posted a mild upset over her stablemate Smartfly, the Wonder Where winner, provinding Patrick Husbands with the stakes score. The Awesome Again filly is out of Dance With Dives, a daugher of Dancethruthedawn. She is 2 for 9 in her career.
MORE SATURDAY – a beautiful October day and who liked it better than RHYTHM OF ROCK? in his 14th race he won his maiden after so many top three finishes and he sure put an exclamation point on it – he tok the 5 furlong race by 12 1/4 lengths and paid just $2.60 to win. Bred by Bob and Barbars Foster, the 4to by Rock and Roll is owned by Tricia Greer and trained by Preston Ferris.
The 2nd was a $12,500 claiming race for older horses and 4 of them were within a length at the finish with the winner being SIR MCINTYRE, who was winning his 2nd straight race for Frank Cirillo and trainer Marty Drexler. The Mull of Kintyre 6yo is 2 for 7 this year and 4 for 25 in his career.
Patrick Husbands rode and he was going to have a good day.
So, it was Husbands in the 3rd, a maiden allowance for 2yo fillies, Ontario sired and you have to love when Husbands takes a speedy srt and gets them to rate. That is what he did with this daughte of 1st crop sire Giant Gizmo – Splash of Gold by Pikepass as she had been very speed first time out and then 2nd to the promising Flipcup last time. She rallied to win the 6 furlong race for owner and trainer Nick Nosowenko, who also bred the 2yo.
The Pick 4 started with IDA BAMBINA winning her maiden in the split of the 2yo filly maiden race that went a touch faster (11.44 bs 1:11.70). The winner is a Where’s the Ring filly bred by Mark Hughes who was making her 5th career race for Charles Buscaglia and Samotowki Stables. Mike DePaul strapped blinkers on the filly and she rallied strongly under Justin Stein.
It was a long time coming but NANCY O won her maiden in race 5 in her first race since the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. This Irish bred by Pivotal out of Horse of the Year Arravale had five races last year and was 3rd in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes. She could have easily been in the top three in the Breeders’ Cup but had a horrible trip.
She was a huge overlayo at 3 to 1 on Saturday and won easily with a hefty 82 Beyer Figure.
The season has run out for turf racing,, essentially, but perhaps she will head south and do some racing.
Bob Costigan and Borders Racing own the 3yo and Carolyn Costigan trains.
Race 6 went to Sam-Son farms’ CLASSY AL, who has blossomed since getting off the grass. The son of Afleet Alex is 2 for 7 in his career now and is a 4yo trained by Malcolm Pierce.
His Beyer of 88 was the best of the day.
CAFE AU LAIT reeled in the faltering speed and won her 2013 opener for Kingfield Racing Stable and Catherine Day Phillips in race 7. She was a hefty 20 to 1 in the allowance race for Ontario sired gals and she is by Mobil.
Race 9 went to MERCENARY, who had to put his head right up the in air in the stretch as he went on to win the $40,00 claiming race. The son of Closing Argument is owned by Dominion Blodstock and Richard Forbush. It was the 3yo’s first win in his 7th race this year.
The finale on the the grass was a maiden $50,00 claiming race that was won by JUBILATE, owned by Augustin Stables and trained by Mark Frostad. The 3yo by Langfuhr was making his 2nd start, was down from a MSW race and making his grass debut. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode.
