THE QUEEN’S HORSE ESTIMATE among the stars to watch this morning at ascot!
Three of this season’s five Classic winners line up at this country’s showcase meeting on Saturday, Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot, but there will be only one horse capable of generating a Frankel-like response from the crowd.
Estimate, who is unbeaten in three starts at Ascot, is owned by the Queen, and if this admirably progressive filly can land the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, you can bet that she will be cheered home in much the same style as when she took the Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting in June.

FRIDAY AT WOODBINE
Windy conditions influence races
The wind and troubled trips ruled the card on Friday at Woodbine. It was a 10-race card (usually we have 9 on Fridays) and there were full fields and some interesting races. The Polytrack appeared a bit dusty, seems to be the norm when the fall and winter come along.
What you can take away from the card of racing is that there were many troubled trips from horses so make up a little list and follow along for the last 6 weeks of the season.
Race 1 – 78 Beyer Figure – The race changed when fast filly Bear’s Pear was scratched as that took some of the speed away. The winner was WEATHER BILL, who battled on the lead with Discreet Glen and then surged clear for his 5th win in 10 races. This cool 3yo colt is owned by Bob Cheema and trained by Dan O’Callaghan. He was a $1,000 weanling purchase and then claimed from Abraham Katryan and ARK Racing and Racing Canada in october 2012 for $40,000.
He is by Weather Warning and was bred by Bernard and Karen McCormack.
Race 2, 80 Beyer Figure a $40,000 claiming race for older horses went to another favourite, URBAN FORESTER, who won his 4th races in his 7th start of 2013. He is by Old Forester and was bred by Clarehaven Farms. Norm McKnight trains.
Race 3– 2yo fillies for $20,000 was a wild affair that was won by another favourite. Rolph Davis’ PAMPAS ANGEL ralied wide to win in her 3rd career race for trainer Robert Tiller. The pace was crazy-fast, set by Canna Red, even with the wind, so the late pace slowed. Still, you had to be interested in the run put in by SILENT BRIDE, by Silent Name. This gal stumbled badly at the start, was last and miles behind late on the turn but she was running fastest of all at the finish.
Race 4- SEEKING TOUSSAUD liked the fact that the race came off the grass as she popped up and won the Ontario sired allowance race for E L R Corp. This Tap Day 3yo, bred by Richard Lister. had been in drab form since 2nd in the Eternal search Stakes 2 starts ago but she rebounded for trainer Josie Carroll.
race 5 – 5th fave in succession – SWEET CUP, from the powerful Murray Stroud and Sam DiPasquale owner and trainer team, won the 5 furlong maiden 2yo filly dash in her 3rd career race. She is a Florida bred by Put It Back. In that race, TOWN VIXEN acted up coming out of the gate, swishing her tail and leaping a bit. Once she got running into the stretch, she closed well.
Race 6 – MISS VICTORIA led all the way for owner and breeder DENNIS MILLS and trainer PETER BERRINGER, marking the first winner of the meeting for Berringer. The 3yo North Light (Ire) filly won the $12,500 maiden claiming race on the pace from the inside.
In that race, SHOWING TRUE had a rival to her inside veer out into her badly, intimidating her and she trailed before closing very nicely.
Race 7 – BESTAVAILABLE led all the way for owner and trained Mike Wright who took the blinkers off this Best of the Bests (Ire) three-year-old. The winner took the $10,00 claiming race under Jesse Campbell, who does very well for the Wright stable.
Race 8 – the fastest race of the day was fun to watch even if it came off the grass. Favoured HEMLOCK CHANNEL, off since May, got up in the nick of time to win the 5 1/2 furlong race in 1:15 4/5, good for a 90 Beyer. This is a very good 4yo who was winning for the 5th time in 11 races and he is owned by True North Stable and trained by Lorne Richards.
Race 9 PRIZED HUMOUR is not a great gate horse and he had been in poor form in his last 2 races for $15,000 and $11,500 claiming. He was down to $9,500 for this 6 1/2 furlong race and rallied wide to win for On The Run Stable and trainer Ross Armata at 7 to 1. Hard to come up with that guy to win this race. INvader THE YANK rode the rail for most of the race and stayed on well before he clipped heels in mid strtech when SKY OF GREY came in and took away his path. The latter was disqualified from 4th to 8th.
And High 5 JACKPOT players probably cashed on the consolation as 4 to 5 shot TYPICAL DAYDREAM rallied to win the maiden $25,000 race at 1 1/16 miles. The Fiedlston Farm homebred had hugh Beyer Figures and he is by Smooth Bid.
The High 5 finish was given out by THOROUGHBLOG in yesterday’s post..but since there was not one unique winner, there is a carryover of $39,000 for today.

OKAY, so we handed out the High 5 (and Superfecta and Triactor) in the last race yesterday – let’s see what today’s last race offers us:
an Ontario sired allowance on the Polytrack at 6 furlongs..not sure this race will yield one unique winner but here are my picks..
Before scratches there is a TON of SPEED in this race on paper…
it will be hard to believe if SILENT YET DEADLY cannot win this 6 furlong dash – he was unlucky not to win last time. He will be low odds.

LISTEN! PIERCE AND DA SILVA WIN PIN OAK VALLEY VIEWS STAKES…
with Pin Oak’s OVERHEARD!
Pin Oak Stable’s Overheard passed Nellie Cashman at the sixteenth pole and went on to win the 23rd running of the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G3) for 3-year-old fillies by a length before a College Scholarship Day crowd of 19,568.
Trained by Malcolm Pierce and ridden by Eurico Da Silva, Overheard raced near the back of the pack in the early going as Stormin Elle set the pace.
On the far turn, Overheard began picking off horses, swung to the outside entering the stretch and surged past Nellie Cashman, who had taken the lead from Stormin Elle. Overheard ran the 1 1/16 miles on a turf course labeled as firm in 1:43.35.
A Kentucky-bred daughter of Macho Uno out of the Thunder Gulch mare Whisper to Me, Overheard captured her second stakes victory and first in graded company. The victory was worth $90,000 and improved Overheard’s earnings to $323,696 with a record of 10-4-3-3.
Sent off as the third choice in the field of 12, Overheard returned $12.40, $5.60 and $3.40. Nellie Cashman, ridden by Forest Boyce, returned $4.80 and $4.20 with favored Summer of Fun finishing 1¾ lengths back in third and returning $2.80 to show under Joe Rocco Jr.

“There was a lot of pressure today because she sponsors this race. We came down here (from Woodbine in Toronto) thinking we had a chance. It’s a lot of fun to win.
“I knew (Overheard would) run big. I didn’t know if she could win this race, but I knew she was ready to run a top race.”
Eurico Da Silva (winning rider)
“My trip was awesome. (I told) Malcolm before the race (that) I was concerned (about saving) some ground. He said, ‘Eurico, I prefer you come outside. I think that’s the best way for her to run today.’ So that’s what I did. I just followed his instructions. When I came home, I had a lot of horse. I was outside; I had a very clear trip. She was ready today.”
