WELL, it was fitting that PATRICK HUSBANDS, this year’s receiver of the Avelino Gomez Awards for a Canadian jockey, won the WOODBINE OAKS (and 2 other races). Plus Gary Barber’s silks were pink, matching the pink-theme of the day) CINDY PIERSON DULAY/HORSE-RACES.NET

AFTER 33 CARDS (100 left!)…

The first Canadian classic at Woodbine has been recorded in the history books and it is less than 3 weeks until the Queen’s Plate. The field will likely be large: Lexie Lou’s huge effort, 92 Beyer and WE MISS ARTIE’S easy Plate Trial win are not scaring anybody.

The best news for the Ontario horse racing industry is that Ontario sires had a big weekend, the local yearling sale did too. LEXIE LOU cost just $5,500 at auction. She is by Sligo Bay (Ire) who stands for about the same amount at Adena Springs.

More amazing perhaps was the victory by CRISTINA’S HALO in the Alywow Stakes, an overnight event that lured a field of 12 including 7 from the Mark Casse barn. Many American bred gals in the field but it was the daughter of LEONNATUS ANTEAS – Siwa by Alydeed who blasted away from the field under Chantal Sutherland-Kruse to win in  :115/18,  78  Beyer Figure. The filly was bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Aurora. She became the first  3-TIME WINNER at Woodbine this year.

CRISTINA’S HALO, owned by Fig Star Stable and trained by Vito Armata, upset the ALYWOW STAKES on Sunday. The daughter of young sire Leonnatus Anteas was a $14,000 yearling purchase. CINDY PIERSON DULAY/HORSE-RACES.NET

Names from last week’s 4 racing days: RALPH BIAMONTE, 4 wins, NICK GONZALEZ, 3 wins, MARK CASSE, 3 wins, PATRICK HUSBANDS 6 wins, EURICO DA SILVA, 5 wins, and EMMA-JAYNE WILSON, 4 wins.

more Sunday:

The well regarded BEHOLD THE BEAR won his maiden in race 1 at 1 1/16 miles (76 Beyer Figure). The son of Henny Hughes is owned by Bear Stables and trained by Reade Baker, who was notching his 1000th career win. Emma-Jayne Wilson, a longtime rider for Baker, guided this Bear to victory.

Race 2 – The red-hot Ralph Biamonte Stakes won 4 races on SATURDAY AND SUNDAY..this race was taken by Its the Rush, also bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale. The Harlington 4yo was making the 3rd start off the layoff and her second straight start fpr $25,00 claiming. She is owned by C. DeMizion and Mary Biamonte. Eurico da Silva rode.

race 3- More Biamonte – DUBACIOUS, an Ohio bred who was 9th in his debut for maiden allowance, dropped to $32,00 claiming and won under Patrick Husbands. The son of E Dubai is owned by Bret Biamonte.

Race 4- A 1 1/4 mile allowance that was a small field but had  no shortage of action. Predictable front runner PATRIOTICANDPROUD led all the way under visiting rider Alan Garcia but Gary Barber/Eclipse Thoroughbred’s gelding veered right from the whip and interfered with another Mark Casse trainee, Dynamic Impact (Husbands up). The stewards put up the claim of foul and demoted the winner. Dynamic Sky, owned by John Oxley, was winning his first race since the Plate Trial last year.

Race 5 – A $12,500 claimer than went to stretch runner MY SILVER BADGE on the turn-back for trainer Mike Wright, who also owned. Second carer win for this 6yo who was ridden by Gary Boulanger.

Race 6 – AIR BLADE won his 2nd race of the meeting for James Redekop. He took this allowance race at 1 1/16 miles with Luis Contreras for his 4th career win in 17 races. The Ghostzapper fellow is trained by Sam DiPasquale.

Race 8 – FREITAG, who was sold privately to Earle Mack two weeks ago (as reported in Thoroughblog) led all the way to win this 11/8 miles allowance race over open company. The giant son of Giant Gizmo earned a career best 78 Beyer Figure and he was ridden by Eurico da Silva. Mark Frostad trains. The Plate will be next.

Race 11 – Chris and Patrick Fung’s SPARROWHAWK, 2nd in both races this season, was shrewdly sent right to the lead by jockey Gerry Olguin and he led all the way through 6 furlongs on the grass to win this allowance race for Ontario sired guys. The son of Old Foresters is a homebred and Tom Bowden trains.

Betting on Sunday was virtually the exact same amount as Saturday – $4.1 million.

READE BAKER celebrates 1,000 wins with wife Janis Maine (middle of sign), assistant trainer Leroy Trotman and Maine’s mother Mary (red).  SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS..

Ralph Biamonte won 2 races – 2 of the more intriguing, interesting events on the card.

First it was the grey 2yo filly UNHINDERED who won a MSW race at 4 1/2 furlongs by more than 6 lengths under a hold by Eurico da Silva – a 57 Beyer Figure that could have been higher had she been asked to run. This $50,000 yearling purchase purchase (Fasig-Tipton October) is by Stormy Atlantic – Sakura Song by Forest Wildcat is from a very good sprint family.

Then the Biamonte team, which excels with young horses and sprinters, watched FLASHY MARGARITTA win the Bold Ruckus Stakes at 6 furlongs on the grass, wire to wire under Husbands. The son of Bold ‘n Flashy – Ritta by Rizzi is owned by Mary Biamonte and Danny Lococo and he was rebounding from a drab season opener when he was 4th at 4 to 5. Flashy Margaritta won the Bull Page and Frost King Stakes last season this was his grass debut.

MAJESTIC KITTEN is 2 for 2 in his career as he won an allowance race for 3yos at 7 furlongs on grass. This guy debuted for $50,000 claiming for James Perrson Racing Stable and co-owner Brian Lynch. He won that race and then added Lasix for his grass debut. Among those he defeated was SHAFT OF LIGHT, the impressive debut winner who flopped in this grass event as he was last. Majestic Kitten, bred by, you know, the Ramsays, is by Kitten’s Joy.

(It should be noted, Lynch probably should have won another grass sprint with a Kitten’s Joy later in the day but MANOFMANYVIRTUES who hopelessly blocked in the stretch. MALBEC, making his 13th start, was the winner for Cecil Peacock and trainer Stuart Simon.)

CHECKERED PAST made up for Shaft of Light as she won the Trillium Stakes, worth $100,000. The 4yo by Smart Strike – Catch the Flag by A. P. Indy is 2 for 2 in 2014. Eurico da Silva rode for Malcolm Pierce. This gal was so strong, she posted a 91 Beyer Figure, bettering her previous best of 75. Champion Sisterly Love was off the board.

Trainer DON PLETERSKI got his first win of the season thanks to a super trip/ride by Husbands on ROCK’S SWEET THING. This gal was well prepared for her 2nd start and first try at the 1 1/16 mile distance of the year. She is a consistently good filly by Rock and Roll, owned and bred by Mervyn Kirby. She is 3 for 18 in her career.
