Tasty Temptation, from the Ruritania, Great Gladiator line…
Terence Dulay photo
It took a while but TASTY TEMPTATION finally got her big win – and her 2nd of her career for that matter.
The brawny grey by Medaglia D’oro out of the Tethra mare Parisia won the 3rd jewel of the Triple Tiara, the Wonder Where Stakes, over a soggy grass course at Woodbine yesterday, posting an 83 Beyer Figure.
The keys to the win? A big filly, soft turf, blinkers off and trainer Mark Casse electing to stay home against a modest field and not head to the CCA Oaks at Belmont.
Bought for $170,000 as a yearling by Woodford Racing, the filly had been 2nd in the La Lorgentte Stakes, 2nd in the Oaks, 4th in the Plate, all with blinkers that she wore since the winter.
Yesterday she snuck into the picture out of nowhere, rallied inside and caught a brave FIRST CIRCLE to win the 1 1/4 mile test.
“I’m just glad she won so I don’t have to hear that she’s only a one-time winner. I’m so tired of hearing that,” he said. “I’ve trained a lot of horses that don’t like to win. She isn’t one of them. It’s just been a matter of bad circumstances. She’s run against some of the best three-year-old fillies in North America. She showed her class today.”
The filly is now 2-for-10 with $400,095 in earnings.
Tasty Temptation returned $6.10, $4.60 and $3.40, combining with First Circle ($25.40, $17.80) for a $157.50 exactor. Forest Uproar ($4) rounded out a triactor worth $816.40. Gore Bay completed a $1 superfecta worth $4,040.80.
The Woodford Racing and Mark Casse team are on a roll – they won the Prince of Wales with Gallant.
Josham Farms bred Tasty Temptation.
Other stuff from Woodbine on Saturday:
Race 1
No doubt most thought this was a 2 horse race between WILDCAT MARIE – 3rd in her debut and by the red-hot Wildcat Heir, trained by Brian Lynch, and firster DAZZLING COUNTESS, touted long ago by the Dave Cotey barn as a good one.
It was those 2 from the start of the 5 1/2 furlong 2yo race and they went went wide late on the turn, carrying out firster NEGLIGEE to the 5 path.
But that sizy gal by Northern Afleet kept on plugging away at the leaders and was up to win for Norman Casse and Quintessential Racing and trainer Mark Casse.
A $52,000 yearling, the filly is bred for grass too.
Corey Fraser, slowly becoming a top jock for the Casse stable, rode Negligee.
Race 2- Tiger roared
Perhaps jockey Tyler PIzarro looked at the Daily Racing Form before the race and saw how wel he got along with Bears Tiger last year at Woodbine for the Bear Stables and trainer Reade Baker. So, he sent the colt to a long lead in the $25,000 claiming race and they kept on going.
The Hold That Tiger fellow was dropping a lot in class from stakes and allowances in western Canada but obviously he prefers Polytrack to any surface.
Two-year-old fillies in the first leg of the first PICK 4 on the card raced on Polytrack at 6 furlongs as race was moved off turf. All the buzz was about the Unbridled’s Song beginner BIANCO TARTUFO, outof Grade 1 winner Stop Traffic, but it was the main track only entrant BIOFUEL who held on for the win for Owner and breeder Brereton Jones and trainer Reade Baker.
2nd win for Baker on the card.
SALTY LANGFUHN is having the time of his life right now. Owned by Maggi Moss and trained by Steve Asmussen (or at least the barn here at Woodbine that takes care of him), the 8yo by Langfuhr is 3 for 4 this season, won for $50K claiming after a pace duel and he’s getting closer to $500K in earnings.
The Asmussen group came back a race later with SEALED BID, a recent $40K claim at Churchill, who won her maiden for $37,500 with a very wide, sustained rally. She is also by Langfuhr.
Just how happy was CREEKSIDE CAFE, the flashy chestnut with the big white face, happy to be back in the barn of the red-hot stable of Sandra Dominguez ? 29 to 1 winner that’s how happy.
The Ospery Stable runner left that trainer last fall, won for $19K claiming in Novemver but had been 3rd or worse in all 4 races this season.
She turned back to a sprint distance yesterday and the Trajectory mare won her return outing for the trainer – her 4th of her career.
Oh yes, the mare was rated just below big favourite BOLD CORKY in the TODO RATINGS, a new systerm of horse valuarion that can be found here:

HUSBANDS WITH 3 WHIP VIOLATIONS
from DAILY RACING FORM, Bill Tallon
Patrick Husbands, Emma-Jayne Wilson, and Luis Contreras all have been fined for whip violations by the Woodbine stewards.
Husbands was fined $500 for his third whip violation, and the second that involved leaving welts on the flank of his mount, after finishing third aboard Mushka in the July 11 Nassau. Wilson was fined $300 for excessive use of the whip, her second such offense, for her ride aboard Mr. Bowie in the third race here July 17. Mr. Bowie finished second, beaten a length. Contreras also was fined $300 for his second excessive use of the whip offense following his ride aboard third-place finisher Always Wildcat’n in last Saturday’s Colin.
WYNNING RIDE, 3RD IN GRADE 1
Canadian-bred WYNNING RIDE did her country proud with a very game 3rd place finish in the COACHING CLUB AMERICAN OAKS yesterday at Belmont.
The Candy Ride – Wynyard filly, bred by Jim and Alice Sapara, led until deep stretch in the 10 furong classic for 3yo fillies before just getting a bit tired.
Her Beyer Figure was 85.
The filly had been 4th in the Woodbine Oaks.
From the American press:
Funny Moon wins Coaching Club American Oaks
NEW YORK — Funny Moon edged Don’t Forget Gil by a neck Saturday to win the $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.
Rachel Alexandra, the class of the division, was out of the picture and Funny Moon took advantage to get her first stakes win. Ridden by Alan Garcia, Funny Moon proved best in the scramble to the wire after negotiating the final turn.
Funny Moon, trained by Christophe Clement, ran the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.44 on the fast track for her fourth win in six starts. She earned $180,000 for Mrs. C. Wilson McNeeley III, paying $17.20, $8.50 and $6.70. Don’t Forget Gil returned $11.40 and $8.40. Wynning Ride paid $5.40 to show.
“She didn’t want to make the turn, she wanted to keep going straight,” Garcia said. “After correcting that, my filly she was much the best.”

HONOURING NIJINSKY II
As important are the races that are held at Woodbine, so to is remembering for whom the races are named.
Today one of the greatest Canadian breds of all time is honoured.
He is the only sire to have a Kentucky Derby and Epsom Derby winner in the same year – remember who they were??
from Wikipedia
The racehorse Nijinsky (1967-1992) (named after the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky) was a son of Northern Dancer and Flaming Page, both winners of the Queen’s Plate, and a great-grandson of Nearco and Bull Lea. For registration clarification, he was recorded as Nijinsky II.
One of the greatest in thoroughbred horse-racing history, this imposing, muscular horse with anything but a gentle nature was bred at E. P. Taylor’s famous Windfields Farm in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He was then bought at the Windfields Farm’s annual yearling auction for $84,000 by American minerals industrialist Charles W. Engelhard, Jr. on whom the James Bond character Auric Goldfinger in the novel Goldfinger and subsequent film was based.
Shipped to Ireland, where he was trained by Vincent O’Brien in Ballydoyle, County Tipperary, Nijinsky became champion two-year-old of both England and Ireland in 1969. The next year, after winning the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, Nijinsky defeated an illustrious field of older horses at Ascot in the mile and a-half King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. These victories revealed Nijinsky and regular jockey Lester Piggott as perhaps the most formidable horse-and-jockey combination ever seen on a racecourse.
Despite a subsequent attack of ringworm, he won the Doncaster St. Leger over one mile and six furlongs, thereby becoming the first horse since Bahram 35 years earlier to complete the English Triple Crown. In his next race, Nijinsky ran in the world-famous Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Hippodrome de Longchamp in Paris, France, where he was sensationally beaten a head by Sassafrás. Many attribute his defeat to an unusually sloppy performance from Piggott, who gave the horse far too much ground to make up in a race not long after his exertions in the St Leger over a longer distance.[citation needed] In his final race, the Champion Stakes, he again finished second, this time to Lorenzaccio. This defeat, while partly attributable to the horse becoming too excited and sweating in the warm-up, confirmed that Nijinsky was past his brilliant peak, and he was immediately retired to stud at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky where he became a very successful stallion.
In the course of his brilliant racing career, Nijinsky smashed the European earnings record. He was subsequently syndicated for a world-record sum. His unfortunate Longchamps defeat took the gloss off a career that many still regard as the greatest ever in terms of brilliance. He also travelled widely, something that can be overlooked when comparing him to other great horses. The staff at O’Brien’s stable regarded Nijinsky as the greatest of all the champions they had looked after.
In 1970, a film was made about his racing career entitled A Horse Called Nijinsky. Narrated by Orson Welles, it was released in U.K. movie theaters and in 1988 put out on VHS video. The much-loved Nijinsky team also was voted the 1970 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team Award. In a poll in 2000, readers of the UK newspaper The Sun voted Nijinsky their “Horse of the Millennium.”
He sired 155 stakes winners and a $13.1 million yearling.
