10 GRADE 1 RACES – EAST AND WEST-Breeders’ Cup challengers getting final tests
Get ready for a whirlwind of action on the simulcast networks at 10 Grade 1 races will be held from mid-afternoon to late evening . ET, as Breeders’ Cup contenders get their final tests.
10 races – 1o picks, let’s try it!
7TH BELMONT – FLOWER BOWL – Gads I am just exhausted picking and betting Stephanie’s Kitten. She is a lovely mare but 2 narrow losses in succession have been costly to backers. Going for a price play on the chance of a “bounce back” – ALTERITE, in her 3rd start off the layoff for owner Martin Schwartz.
8th BELMONT – VOSBURGH – Looks tough to beat PALACE, a son of City Zip, but HAPPY MY WAY may hang on one of these days.
9th BELMONT – JOE HIRSCH – could be a slow enough pace that TWILIGHT ECLIPSE gets back into the winner’s circle. This is an odd race, with a small field.
10th – BELMONT, JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP – another confusing assortment of horses, lots of 3yos vs. some blue collar older guys. TONALIST and ZIVO look like the ones I will side with.
5th SANTA ANITA (530 EST) – ZENYATTA STAKES – BEHOLDER
6TH SANTA ANITA – FRONT RUNNER S. – 2yos, with a heavy fave in American Pharoah, very strange race, go for a price horse, maybe Mark Casse trainee CONQUEST PANTHERA?
7th SANTA ANITA – RODEO DRIVE S. – Canadian bred IRISH MISSION is in top form.
8th race AWESOME AGAIN S. – SHARED BELIEF over MAJESTIC HARBOR
SHARED BELIEF is ONE RACE AT A TIME
BY LARRY STUMES – SFGATE.COM
If horse racing were like football, the Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita would be considered a trap game for undefeated Shared Belief.
It is sandwiched between two much more important Grade 1 events: the $1 million Pacific Classic, which Shared Belief won Aug. 24 at Del Mar, and the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
“I just take it one race at a time, so I’m not even thinking beyond Saturday,” trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer said this week

MOMENTUM WINS TRINIDADIAN TRIPLE CROWN
beats previously unbeaten Princess Popstar, Husbands stays in T.O.
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaican bred Momentum (Brian Boodramsingh) strode to Triple Crown glory when he won the Trinidad Derby easily defeating the previously unbeaten local horse-of-the-year Princess Popstar a short while ago at the Santa Rosa racetrack.
It was a very unusual race, as Princess Popstar for the first time in her career was kept from off the pace by jockey Wilmer Galviz. She raced in mid-pack throughout most of the event and was really never a winning factor for the entire race. Princess Popstar simply did not perform.
Momentum is bred by Everglades Farms and is by Western Classic – Sea Treaty. Third in the event was Glorious Country.
