YOUMZAIN NOT COMING TO WOODBINE
CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL/E.P. TAYLOR NEWS
Youmzain set for winter break
press association
Youmzain is likely to be put away for the season following another gallant effort to finish second in the Prix
de l’Arc de Triomphe for the third year running.
Connections are set to resist the temptation of races such as the Canadian International and the Breeders’ Cup Turf and concentrate instead on a 2010 campaign, with a fourth attempt at the Arc on the agenda.
“He is most unlikely to run again in 2009 but it’s very much on the cards that he’ll remain in training and
follow a similar campaign as a seven-year-old, when he would go for races like the Coronation Cup in which he Was so unlucky this year,” Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Jaber Abdullah told www.mickchannon.tv.
“Youmzain seems to excel round Longchamp and it would be lovely to think he could go back next year and win it, as we all think he deserves it.”
Channon added: “He’s travelled home fine and looks fantastic. I would not have been against him running again this year, but that choice is Jaber’s. He is the owner.”
TRIP TO TORONTO JUST AS WELL
FROM THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS
As written in this space before, Just As Well was taken over by trainer Jonathan Sheppard from George Strawbridge who wanted to sell the horse, has gone on to be a Grade 1 winner:
“This horse hadn=t broken his maiden, had some
mystery unsoundness,” Sheppard explained of the colt=s
three-year-old season.
“I told [Mr. Strawbridge] that I would take him if he’d give him to me, and he said, ‘I
would appreciate that very much,’ and he did. I turned him out for about six months in a big field and I brought him back in, really not knowing what to expect. We didn’t know how good he was. We knew he had a big pedigree. He’s gone from strength to strength, and it’s just been amazing.”
The dark bay has celebrated an outstanding season, with a win in the July 11 GIII Arlington H. prior to a
runner-up effort behind Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) in the GI Arlington Million Aug. 8. In his most recent appearance, Just as Well crossed the line second in the GI Northern Dancer S. at Woodbine, but was awarded
the victory upon the disqualification of Marsh Side (Gone West). The result is currently under appeal. Despite
the success this season, Sheppard does not expect Just as Well to make the trip to California for the
Breeders= Cup. He will instead return to Toronto for the GI Canadian International S. Oct. 17.

GOOD BETTING RACE SHOULD HELP BAD WEATHER
It’s ugly out there in Toronto right now – heavy rains again, huge winds that hopefully will calm down before racing tonight at Woodbine.
The 9 gals entered in the Ontario-sired Classy ‘n Smart include last year’s 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the race – YOU WILL LOVE ME and NICKI KNEW, both of whom have had trouble winning races this year.
AUTHENICAT has been well spotted all season as she tries for some big-time black type in graded races and now she gets some much needed class relief.
It’s not her best distance but she might be good enough.
The gal she has to beat is the streaking DOUBLE MALT, who has been very happy, thank you, since she moved into Ontario sired races, with three consecutive scores in stakes races.
FROM WIKIPEDIA..
Classy ‘n Smart (1981-1999) was bred and raced by Sam-Son Farm, she made nine career starts, winning five and running second in three others. Although she was voted the 1984 Canadian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, her true legacy is as a Champion broodmare. Her most important foals were:
* Dance Smartly (b. 1988) – sired by Danzig, the superstar filly was inducted in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame as well as the United States Racing Hall of Fame. Dance Smartly went undefeated in 1991 while winning the Canadian Triple Crown and becoming the first horse bred in Canada to ever win a Breeders’ Cup race. She retired as the richest filly in world racing history with earnings of US$$3,263,835. In turn, Dance Smartly was the dam of Scatter The Gold winner of two of the three Canadian Triple Crown races as well as Dancethruthedawn who won the Grade I Go For Wand Handicap at Saratoga Race Course in the United States plus she won Canada’s most prestigious race, the Queen’s Plate.
* Smart Strike (b. 1992) – a multiple graded stakes race winner and the Leading sire in North America in 2007 and 2008. His progeny includes two-time American Horse of the Year, Curlin, Canadian Horse of the Year, Soaring Free, and American Champion Male Turf Horse, English Channel. Smart Strike is also the damsire of 2009 Kentucky Derby winer, Mine That Bird.
Classy ‘n Smart died at age eighteen on September 28, 1999 at Sam-Son Farm. Inaugurated in 1997, the Classy ‘N Smart Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack was named in her honor. In 2004, she was inducted in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
