Fort Larned leads most of way to win Classic for Janis Whitham
Trainer IAN WILKES looked a bit shell shocked after the race. It was if the Aussie didn’t know what to say but he didn’t need to say much. That dark bay colt by E Dubai said enough. FORT LARNED rode what appeared to be a strong inside, speed bias and won the Breeders’ Cup Classic for owner/breed Janis Whitham (owned Bayakoa who is Fort Larned’s 2nd dam).
Wilkes, a former assistant to Carl Nafzger, won his first race 1 race just 3 years ago with Candyman Can.
FORT LARNED, picked by 3 DRF employees of 20 polled in what was a small edition of the DRF (there were a lot of featured missing because the DRF offices were rocked by Hurricane Sandy), is named after an historical site in Kansas.

The Classic ended a very long day of 9 Breeders’ Cup races. Here are observations from THOROUGBLOG’S day the track:
JUVENILE TURF – Very toughly run race..GEORGE VANCOUVER was a hotshot 2yo in England and blew past for a nice win. From the lovely Phipps breeding of VERSAILLES TREATY.
It was a rough day for selectors all over but thank goodness for GROUPIE DOLL, who won the Filly and Mare Sprint at odds on.
She is 9 for 16 in her career and is from a Silver Deputy mare called Deputy Call.
The Dirt Mile was a gofy race. TAPIZAR won off the 6th beaten 20 lengths and a 71 Beyer. The Tapit colt was 5th in this race last year. He is out of a Deputy Minister mare.
The TURF SPRINT was something to behold as it marked an inrecible training job by Mike Puype. The 4yo filly by MIZZEN MAST (he sired 2 Breeders’ Cup winners) had not races since May! She is co-owned by talk show host Jim Rome.
JUVENILE COLT winner SHANGHAI BOBBY is a brave young colt who is now 5 for 5. This Harlan’s Holiday fellow was not given much of a chance during the race as he was headlong in a mad pace duel and he looked doomed off the last turn but founght on bravely.
LITTLE MIKE was 5th beaten 28 lengths in his race before the TURF. But he won the TURF for his first win at 1 1/22 miles on grass in perhaps one ofthe most perplexing events of the day. Horses like SHARETA, ST NICHOLAS ABBEY didn’t show up and POINT OF ENTRY had a tough trip.
TRINNIBERG is 5 for 13 in his career now that he has won the SPRING. This hard trying guy was adding blinkers for the Parbhoo family who own and train the Teuflesberg colt.
WISE DAN followed up his Woodbine Mile win with a very nice BC Mile win and he could be named HOrse of the Year. Morton Fink’s homebred by Wiseman’s Ferry is 13 for 20 in his career and was well managed by Charles Lopresti.
Shanghai Bobby overcame very curious tactics to be sent hard all the way to win the Juvenile.

ARCADIA, Cali. — Unbeknownst to the rest of the contenders for Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, trainer Ian Wilkes had a pact he needed to keep. And anyone who knows the former Carl Nafzger protégé knows he is man of integrity.
A week earlier, Wilkes and his fellow Kentucky-based trainers Buff Bradley and Charlie Lopresti decided they needed to bring a hat trick to the California area — hockey season or not. And when Bradley saddled Groupie Doll to victory in the Filly and Mare Sprint and Lopresti’s Wise Dan took the Mile, Wilkes didn’t want to be the guy who let his brethren down.

Casse: Spring in the Air bled badly in Juvenile Fillies
“This could end her career” – Mark Casse
ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Mark Casse said Saturday that Keeneland’s Alcibiades winner Spring in the Air bled badly in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park.
Casse going into the event was an outspoken critic of the Breeders’ Cup rule this year that no horse in its five races for 2-year-olds could run on the anti-bleeder medication commonly known as Lasix.
“Before I was disappointed with the Breeders’ Cup,” he said. “Now I’m just down-right mad. I am furious.”
Casse said owner John Oxley was so upset that they considered – but did not – withdrawing Dynamic Sky from Saturday’s Juvenile.
Casse said Spring in the Air, who went off at odds slightly under 6-1, was traveling well when she acted like she was going to bolt midway through the far turn. He said jockey Patrick Husbands reported that when he got the filly down to a jog pulling up after the race, she started coughing.

He’s Had Enough, second in the Juvenile, and Delegation, third in the Dirt Mile, led the way for Canadian-connected horses at the Breeders’ Cup, on Saturday, at Santa Anita.
He’s Had Enough, owned by J. Paul Reddam of Windsor, Ontario, endured a difficult trip in the Grade 1, $2-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but was courageous to the wire to be second to Shanghai Bobby.
“To overcome all that trouble, he ran dynamite,” said trainer Doug O’Neill. “Right to the end, I was still thinking he was going to get there. He got beat by a nice horse.”
Delegation, recent winner of the Grade 3 Durham Cup at Woodbine for trainer Mark Casse, rallied strongly along the rail to be third to Tapizar in the Grade 1, $1-million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
“I had so much horse and I was coming on the rail,” said Woodbine-based rider Patrick Husbands. “I was begging for a little break. When I finally got it, it was too late. He showed up like a champion. He ran a big race.”

– Bridgetown (Canadian-owned and bred by Melnyk Racing Stables of Toronto) was fourteenth to Mizdirection.

Smart String wins Maple Leaf
Norm Files caught Smart Sting winning, one of 4 winners for Eurico Da Silva
One of 2 ‘Smart’ gals in the race for Stronach Stables and trainer Roger Attfield, SMART STING won her second major race on the Polytrack when she easily took the Maple Leaf Stakes worth $175,000 at Woodbine yesterday.
The daughter of Smart Strike – Perfect Sting has been racing o nthe grass almost exclusively for a long time but her last Polytrack race was a win in the Selene Stakes last year as a 3yo over Inglorious.
She posted an 89 Beyer Figure for her win.
She is 4 for 13 in her career and 2 for 2 on synthetic.
The highest Beyer Figure for the day was earned by MALIBU SKYLINE, who won the delayed finale for $16,000 claimers. The race went off almost 30 minutes late as the lights did not come on and the horses had to stay in the paddock.
Malibu Slyline earned a 91 Beyer for the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03 and he is owned by Bruce Lunsford and trained my Mike MacDonald.
The 2yo colt CLEARLY NOW posted an impressive 85 Beyer to win the first race for Up hill Stable and trainer Brian Lynch. Emma0Jayne Wilson rode the son of Horse Greely who is now 2 for 2.
The next 2 races were also won by unebaten 2yos: SMELLS LIKE GOLD, bred by Goldmart Farms, won for $32K claiming fgor his 2nd win. He is by Sligo Bay out of Semiramis by Elusive Quality and trained by Bob Tiller.
OROGINAL SCRIPT, an Ontario bred 2yo filly for Chiefswood Stable, won again in her 2nd race and posted a 65 Beyer. Paul Attard trains the Malibu Moon 0 Seanachai filly.
Trainer DESMOND MAYNARD won his first race of the season when HARDCASTLE (Dance to Destiny – Keys to Heaven) won his maiden in race 4. The gelding is owned by Balm Beach Acres and he was making his 7th start.
The ever important “draw in from the also eligible list angle) proved golden in race 6 as BANGLA DANCER drew in and won the 2yo filly dash while REEL GOOD MOVIE also drew in and finished 3rd. The winner was 5 to 1 and the 3rd filly was 40 to 1. The winner was the first Woodbine win this year foir Lynn Simon and the owners are Silver King Farm. She is a 2yo by Aljabr, a former Ontario sire.
