NORM MCKNIGHT, who led all Woodbine trainers by wins in 2017, has entered his first horses at Oaklawn Park, his winter home for 2018.
McKnight, who has about 2 dozen horses at the Arkansas track, has Villageofvibank on the also-eligible list in race 1 and After Party in a $25,000 claiming race, race 6.
It has not been smooth sailing for trainig at Oaklawn in the last few weeks with frigid temperatures cancelling training. The track recently was closed for 3 days.

LUIS CONTRERAS is named to ride After party and another Woodbine regular, ALAN GARCIA, is also riding at Oaklawn this winter.

KEENELAND JANUARY SALE – CANADIAN BUYERS

Keeneland realized double-digit growth in gross, average and median prices during Monday’s opening session of the 2018 January Horses of All Ages Sale, which was highlighted by the $485,000 paid by Steven W. Young, agent, for Bellavais, a stakes-winning daughter of Tapit from a successful female family developed and raced by Darby Dan Farm.

Young said he purchased Bellavais for an undisclosed client and that she would resume training with Todd Pletcher.

On Monday, Keeneland sold 186 horses for $13,265,100, up 26.17 percent above last year’s first session when 163 horses grossed $10,514,000. The average of $71,318 increased 10.57 percent from $64,503 in 2017, while the median of $45,000 rose 28.57 percent from $35,000 last year.

According to sales results at www.keeneland.com, the following Canadians purchased horses from the first session of the Horses of All Ages sale:

Brenda and Austin Paul – yearling Tonalist filly out of Quintile 120,000
Denny Andrews – yearling Lea filly out of Maggie Simon 60,000
yearling filly by Competitive Edge – Anjorie 52,000

RAINBOW 6 AT GULFSTREAM – CARRYOVER IS $1.4 million for tomorrow!

Rain today and later in the week could play havoc

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the 24th consecutive program Sunday, swelling the jackpot carryover to $1,464,550.68 for Wednesday’s card.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The carryover jackpot pool going into Sunday’s six-race sequence (Races 6-11) was $1,287,926.22, generating a Rainbow 6 handle of $736,026.

The popular multi-race wager has last solved on Dec. 7, when a lucky ticketholder cashed for a $98,309.32 jackpot payoff.

So, how in the world does a recreational handicapper/bettor take a stab at a bet like this?

Be aware you are going up against  syndicates who are putting thousands of dollars into a ticket or tickets, so those groups have a slightly better chance at getting a share if the winnings.

But you can’t win a share of the pie, which is a big one, unless you put in a ticket.

At 20 cents, you can use a few horses in every race and not break the bank. If you are comfortable playing a

2x2x2x2x2x2 ticket – that is just over $12 for the cost.

OR, find a key in one of the 6 races, maybe even 2 keys, and spread your picks in the other legs.

Here are some thoughts on the 6 races that make up the RAINBOW 6 on Wednesday January 10:

Race 5- 7 12 furlongs, turf – if on the grass..maiden claimers on the grass, not an easy start, CHECK the tote board before submitting your ticket there are a couple of firsters in the field.

Contenders – 2 – BERNINI, red hot barn does not fool around with debut runners for maiden claiming – 36% winners in last 2 years. Half brother to 2 turf winners. Would still use this one if race is moved to main track (could be a key horse if you want to take a stand early!)

HOWDY BOY, trouble in latest off the layoff, CASH CALL KITTEN, Ramsey beginner and NONNO NIO.

Race 6 – 5 furlong on turf – again if rains continue, the race could come off turf and throw a wrench into plans

CONTENDERS – on grass  5, 8, 2, 1, 3 – All About Yasom is making the 3rd start off the layoff; Amelia’s Wild Ride plunges in class and has earned almost $600,000; My Validation comes in from Remington and is a longshot play and SINGANOTHERSONG is logical. BILLY THE BULL drops and is the speed of the speed

Race 7 – tough, a $12,500 maiden claiming race..

6- 8 -9 Sweet Deal..hot barn, fresh, good back Beyer Figures; Silva Queen, plunges in class and the speed-of-the-speed could be Chickie’s Trick

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, claiming $30,000 – confusing little race for non-winners of 2…would give a look to Woodbine-trained THE ACCUSER off the claim,  MIDWAY PLAYA and speedy MR JOSHUA

Race 9  allowance/optional on turf..if on the grass..lots of horses who look the same on form, stretch running gals..READY FOR SUMMER, WARRIOR HALL and PHANTOM OPENING are the interesting ones for grass.

Race 10 – $6,250 claiming at 1 mile on dirt.. crazy race..you could key the 2 horse off the claim by Bruno Schickedanz MIDNIGHTONBROADWAY, maybe used LITTLE SKY as well, or, find a silly longshot in what is a weak, weak race.

Good luck!
